Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Montreal Canadiens prospect Joshua Roy made his AHL debut with the Laval Rocket in their 6-3 loss to the Springfield Thunderbirds. Brett Kulak did not rule out coming back to Montreal once he is a free agent again in July, so we talk about whether the Canadiens should make him an offer and how they would use him on the team. Plus, we speculate on Jesse Puljujarvi as rumours that the Edmonton Oilers may be willing to part with him abound - his playoff stats have not been great, however, a player who is still young (an RFA this year) who could become useful under Martin St. Louis' system might be worth a look for the Habs. Finally, we have our season review for Brendan Gallagher, who played through many injuries as well as the loss of two linemates he had much success with. Can he bounce back?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Montreal Canadiens announced the stunning hire of Marie-Philip Poulin as a player development consultant. It's a massive step forward for the Canadiens as the continue to modernize their front office and they hired one of the greatest to ever lace up a pair of skates. Scott and Laura discuss Poulin's role and which prospects she can likely help the most in the coming months.

Speaking of prospects, the long-awaited professional debut of Joshua Roy appears to be on the near horizon. Gabriel Bourque was missing from the Laval Rocket's morning skate and Roy was inserted onto a line with Joël Teasdale and Cedric Paquette. He however, did not practice with the power play groups, so what can we potentially expect from Roy is he is in the lineup for Game 3 at Place Bell?

Once again, Artturi Lehkonen has sent his team to the Stanley Cup Final with an overtime goal in the Western Conference Final. Scott and Laura reflect on the trade that sent Lehkonen to Colorado, and how neither host is shocked at how well he's play for the Avs. The hosts also take a look at the Edmonton Oilers, who finally made a deep run, but were seemingly outmatched every step of the way by Colorado. Would the Oilers have advanced if they acquired an actual quality NHL goalie, like say Jake Allen?

The Montreal Canadiens have signed defenseman Chris Wideman to a 2-year contract extension, and we discuss what it means for the Habs' own timeline for their rebuild. We also discuss two hot topics in the Canadiens fanbase: what would it take to trade for the 2nd overall pick from the New Jersey Devils so that the Habs can get both Shane Wright AND Juraj Slafkovsky? And how difficult will it be to trade Shea Weber's contract to another NHL team?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Carey Price has won the 2022 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance and dedication to the sport of hockey. Yet, somehow there was not all congratulations and applause for the Habs franchise netminder. Scott and Laura break down the story around Price and his comeback and also debate whether the spilled ink around his win is worth it.

After that, the NHL Draft Combine was last week in Buffalo, with all the top prospects converging to take part in player interviews with NHL teams and to do their fitness testing. Unsurprisingly the Montreal Canadiens were at the forefront of the news, not only based on who they were interviewing with, but also the seemingly odd questions they asked to the draft-eligible players. Scott and Laura discuss the biggest question posed to the prospects, and also if there's anything to read into which players were treated to dinner by Kent Hughes and the Canadiens.

Finally, the Laval Rocket kicked off the Eastern Conference Finals against the Springfield Thunderbirds on Saturday night. Scott breaks down the first two games of the series, in which the Rocket earned a hard-fought split on the road, and where the series is headed next. The hosts also take a look at when we might see top prospect Joshua Roy in the lineup, and what tweaks can still be made to keep the momentum in their favour.

In this week's Habs mailbag, things get a little bit wild as we discuss all kinds of topics. We start with the Laval Rocket and the 3 keys to their series against the Springfield Thunderbirds, which starts this weekend. We then discuss a few listener submitted hypothetical trade proposals. We look at a couple of prospects in the CHL and also speculate on where J.F. Houle would play Joshua Roy and Riley Kidney. Finally, we discuss a few off the rails type mailbag questions, to add in a little bit of fun.

We also discuss Joshua Roy joining the Laval Rocket in advance of their Eastern Conference Final against the Springfield Thunderbirds. Finally, we discuss the profile of Hilary Knight written by Meg Linehan of the Athletic and the importance of being able to be who you are on your own terms.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Scott and Laura welcome Byron Bader(@ByronMBader) to the show to discuss all manner of things related to hockey prospect pools. The hosts ask Byron how his site hockeyprospecting.com works, and how his model helps to predict the futures of all 32 NHL franchises. They learn about how things as small as what league a player is drafted from can help form comparisons dating back 32 years!

Naturally the next question is, how do prospects like Joshua Roy and and Riley Kidney stack up inside Bader's model and how they project in the future. Would a season like the one Roy just had in the QMJHL project even better in a league like the OHL or WHL?

Finally, with 14 picks in the upcoming NHL Draft, how does adding a Shane Wright impact their ranking? Scott also wants to know, if you can overcome a lack of superstar talent, with a wealth of mid-tier NHL talent projections. The hosts also ask Bader about how his model projects the current top three in the draft rankings, and how Juraj Slafkovsky stacks up to Shane Wright.

As the Montreal Canadiens gear up to make their selections in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, we wanted to get more insight into the prospects currently on the general radar of the Habs community. Tony Ferrari of the Hockey News joins us to share his thoughts on players we want to know more about, such as Shane Wright (of course), Logan Cooley, Juraj Slafkovksy, Conor Geekie, and more. Plus, we discuss Joshua Roy and where he would have been drafted this year.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Montreal Canadiens GM Kent Hughes is set to meet with Shane Wright this week at the NHL's Draft Combine in Buffalo New York. While it is mostly a formality as the Canadiens will meet with dozens of prospects over the coming week, but with the recent chatter that Wright will indeed be the first overall pick it has the Habs fanbase giddy.

With the news Hughes is meeting with Wright, Scott and Laura discuss a question they received from a listener a week ago. Can Shane Wright one day be as good or better than Nick Suzuki? Scott doesn't think so as of right now, but that's okay because he believes Wright should be allowed to forge his own path, and not be held to an unfair standard.

Also, the Laval Rocket are into the Eastern Conference Finals, and another listener wanted to know if the team is too reliant on it's veterans instead of its prospects. Scott breaks down how the veterans are every bit as important to a successful AHL team, and that even with the prospects being relatively quiet on the scoresheet they've played quite well. The two hosts also discuss potentially changing the CHL/NHL agreement and letting younger players play in the AHL in the near future.

Finally, it's back to player reviews, and in this show it's Joel Armia in the spotlight! The big Finn had a disappointing regular season for the Habs, but has dominated at the World Championships, winning a gold medal on Sunday. Is Armia gone in the off-season, or can Martin St. Louis work his magic with him and bring back the power forward from the 2021 playoffs?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Scott travelled to see the Laval Rocket potentially close out their third round series with the Rochester Amerks on Wednesday night. What he got instead was a triple overtime, 11 goal affair that pushed the Rocket to the limit, before they managed to pull off the sweep in hostile territory. So what exactly does it feel like to miss a last minute game-tying goal, and then suffer through another 90 minutes of hockey? Scott has all the details from his road trip!

It's also time for the Friday Mailbag! Inside this edition the hosts debate how different generations of Habs fans will react to the impending rebuild, and if Kent Hughes being transparent with his plan will help things. Scott also breaks down what it would take for the Canadiens to make a trade up to second overall, as rumors have the Devils being interested in trading down from their spot to gather additional assets.

The hosts also discuss forgotten prospects, how Laval manages their vets, and the perfect ravioli filling.
