Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Canadiens are currently in full NHL Draft mode, but that hasn't stopped their AHL club from making moves before free agency begins. The Laval Rocket have signed former draft pick Xavier Simoneau to a one year, AHL contract, very similar to that of Rafaël Harvey-Pinard. Scott and Laura discuss how Simoneau can follow in Harvey-Pinard's footsteps, and what the future holds for the seventh round draft pick of the Canadiens.

Also, Colin White was bought out by the Ottawa Senators, and going into this past NHL Trade Deadline, the Canadiens were rumored to be interested in his services. NHL Insiders have seemingly confirmed that Montreal is again an extremely likely landing spot for White, but is he a fit for the rebuilding Canadiens? Even if he does end up here, does Colin White's arrival spell the end of Christian Dvorak's tenure at the same time?

To round out the show, a bit of speculation based on the hiring of a new GM in San Jose. With Mike Grier at the helm, there's likely to be changes to the San Jose Sharks roster as they need to shed salary in order to begin a re-tooling of their own properly. One name that may be on their buyout list is that of Marc-Edouard Vlasic, someone who has been linked to Montreal in the past. Would the aging defender be a proper fit on a dirt cheap contract? Or is it better to let the younger prospects find their own way and pass on Vlasic?

On the eve of the NHL Draft in Montreal where the Canadiens have the first overall pick, we break down some takeaways from the press conference held by Habs GM Kent Hughes and Special Advisor to Hockey Operations Vincent Lecavalier. We discuss: our opinion on who the pick will be, what we learned about the direction the Montreal Canadiens are going in based on their hiring of Team 33, what other teams around the league are doing to exploit market inefficiencies, and what we think may happen with Jeff Petry's request to be traded.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The NHL Draft is just 48 hours away, and the hosts have some final thoughts as the Canadiens picking first overall draws near. Scott gives his final thoughts on the overwhelmingly large debate surrounding Juraj Slafkovsky, and both hosts agree on one fact, they don't dislike Slafkovsky the player. They do both also agree that picking him isn't the proper overall fit for what the Montreal Canadiens need at this exact moment.

Then, in a special Tuesday Mailbag, the hosts answer a ton of listener questions like: What is a realistic trade up opportunity if the second overall pick isn't available? Is there a way for Montreal to trade for the suddenly available Jesse Puljujärvi? What if Montreal is trading up for a defencemen instead of a winger, and who is our greatest wish if they were to trade up between 10th and 20th overall?

Also, which bird is our host's favourite?

There are only a few days left until the NHL draft and speculation about what the Montreal Canadiens plan to do is rampant. We decided to take a break from debating what's going on with the first overall pick and instead talk about some QMJHL prospects that may be available to the Habs over the course of this upcoming draft with special guest Jérôme Bérubé, Director of Scouting at HockeyProspect.com who brings a decade of scouting experience and years of focus on the QMJHL with him to this episode. We discuss:

Noah Warren

Nathan Gaucher

Jordan Dumais

Tristan Luneau

David Goyette

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

David St-Louis of EP Rinkside joins the show once again! Scott and Laura start by asking David how he rates the overall current Montreal Canadiens prospect pool outside of the professional ranks. David breaks down the rise of Kaiden Guhle and where he can project himself to in the NHL ranks in the near future. St-Louis also answers Scott's questions about Arber Xhekaj, who has entrenched himself in the eye of the Canadiens fanbase, and will join their professional ranks next season.

Laura also wants to break down how David analyzes a draft, and how a team like the Montreal Canadiens should approach this year's NHL Draft. How do you balance needing to draft to fill out organizational needs, but also drafting the best player available? What sort of things might impact pick selections such as injuries or inconsistent performances?

Finally, with Montreal needing to fill so many spots in their prospect pool, where should they be focusing? David gives his thoughts on where Montreal can fill out their draft board with quality players, and still meet their needs. Where can Montreal bolster their defensive needs? Is there high quality wingers available as the draft goes on? David gives his thoughts!

With the NHL Draft one week away, the Montreal Canadiens currently have 14 picks with which to select the next players of this rebuilding team. We talk to one of our most-requested guests, David St Louis of Elite Prospects, about what players might be available to the Habs at 26th or at 33rd. First, we get the Shane Wright vs Juraj Slafkovsky debate out of the way and ask David his thoughts, and then compare the criticisms of him to those of Nick Suzuki before he made the NHL. Then we talk about players with high upside who might be of interest to the Habs with their second first round pick. Finally, we discuss some high-risk, high-reward players in this draft in case Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton want to swing for the fences.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Colorado Avalanche, and more importantly Artturi Lehkonen are Stanley Cup Champions as they knocked off the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games! The hosts discuss Lehkonen's impact on the Avs and if Lehkonen could have had a stronger impact on the Canadiens if he was utilized in a more productive way. Also, was the trade that sent him West a rare instance of both teams winning in the end?

Scott and Laura also discuss the lessons that Kent Hughes could learn from Joe Sakic as the Habs prepare for a painful rebuild in the coming year. Colorado was at one point the worst team in recorded history just over five years ago, and they were able to become a powerhouse in rapid fashion. Can Hughes and Jeff Gorton take some lessons from the Avs who built their Cup-winning team through smart drafting, development, and patience?

Finally, the 2022 Hockey Hall of Fame class was announced today, and despite multiple candidates being elected, both hosts feel as though the class is missing key pieces. Namely, the omission of Caroline Ouellette who was passed over this year, with the selection committee not even using both open spots for women's hockey. Who should headline next year's class, and does the selection process need overhauling?

The Montreal Canadiens seem set to lost two of their coaching staff with Luke Richardson reportedly becoming the Chicago Blackhawks' next head coach and Sean Burke leaving the Habs to become Director of Goaltending for the Vegas Golden Knights. We talk about their impact on the team before moving on to the mailbag questions, covering topics such as: who plays on the first line with Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield next year? What would an all-Muppet starting lineup look like? Why are we forgetting Ryan Poehling in the conversation? and more.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

For the first time ever, Scott and Laura are joined by a current player, and 2022 NHL Draft prospect Chase Coward of the Red Deer Rebels! The hosts talk to Chase about his path to the WHL, and finally being on the cusp of being selected by an NHL team. Are there nerves? How did Chase approach this season compared to a non-Draft year?

What does it mean for Chase Coward to "Be an Ollie"? How does the young netminder's mantra help push him to be better, even after tough games? How has he improved on areas that he considered weaknesses, and how can he continue to improve to reach new levels in his progress? Chase breaks down who he modeled his current game after, namely Stuart Skinner of the Edmonton Oilers, and who he admired growing up in the form of Marc-Andre Fleury.

If Chase had to compare himself to a band or genre of music, what would it be? Also, given how unique goalies are, how does Chase rank himself on a scale of 1-10 in terms of weirdness? Chase breaks down his superstitions, and if he talks to his goal posts like his goaltending idol. He also walks Scott and Laura through his pre-game routines, and how he handles the pressures of goaltending every night.
