Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

In this special crossover episode with Locked On Oilers, Brett Holden gives us the inside scoop on Kaiden Guhle's still-ongoing season with the Edmonton Oil Kings. We first discuss what Kaiden Guhle has brought to Edmonton since his trade there and how the team has been important in his development as a top defensive prospect in the Montreal Canadiens system. We then talk about aspects of his game he will need to build upon or improve on as he moves forward in his career and makes the jump to professional hockey. We touch on how we expect he will fit into the Habs' system under Martin St. Louis. Finally we talk specifically about how he has played leading up to and in the Memorial Cup.

Locked On Oilers can be found wherever you get your podcasts as well as on YouTube, and you can follow Brett Holden on twitter at @therealholden40.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

With all eyes intently focused on the first overall pick, the Canadiens do also hold another first round pick at 26th overall. If Montreal does go the expected route, and selects Shane Wright first overall, what should they do with their other first round pick? Scott and Laura debate the merits of selecting another centre like Owen Beck or Noah Ostlund to further improve the depth at that position. However, what if they decide to take a winger at 26th overall, such as Filip Mesar or Ivan Miroshnichenko?

However, if the Canadiens do decide to take a risk and draft Juraj Slafkovsky, Scott believes drafting a centre at 26th overall is the only way forward, namely someone like the aforementioned Owen Beck. Given Montreal's needs, not grabbing a centre in the first round feels like a gigantic misstep from the Habs front office.

The final hypothetical, what if the Canadiens pull off a Josh Anderson trade and move up into the top 15 of the draft? The hosts discuss the merits of drafting a high-end defensive piece and if it's needed considering the current prospect pool. Or is taking a chance on a player like Brad Lambert worth the cost of moving in the first round?

On today's episode, we first discuss thoughts regarding the Hockey Canada hearing with the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage following their settlement of a $3.55-million dollar lawsuit after an alleged sexual assault by CHL players including members of Team Canada's World Junior Hockey Championship team. We then have our Montreal Canadiens player season review of Cole Caufield, followed by a discussion of the criticism that former Habs captain Shea Weber has received now that he has been traded out of Montreal. Is it fair to criticize Weber when he was never given the supporting cast or tools to in in Montreal?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

After discussing the departure of Shea Weber in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights, Scott and Laura take a look at the newest arrival to Montreal in the form of Evgenii Dadonov. A consistent 20 goal winger with good underlying numbers seems to be what the doctor order for Martin St. Louis and the Habs, but where will he play in the lineup? Also, with just one year left on his deal, how attractive does Dadonov become as a trade piece for the Canadiens heading into another season where they're expected to be less than spectacular?

Then, due to an overwhelming amount of questions, the mailbag was extended into Monday's show! The hosts tackle where the prospect pipeline on defence is headed, and if a player like Mattias Norlinder could be traded in the near future. Also, which player out of Jordan Harris and Kaiden Guhle is likely to start the year in the NHL, and which will start as the Laval Rocket's top defender? Can Arber Xhekaj continue to surprise, or is his first stop in the organization in the ECHL? Finally, which members of the Habs would star in an all Montreal version of Lord of the Rings?

With Shea Weber unlikely to ever play in the NHL again, the Montreal Canadiens traded his contract to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Evgenii Dadonov. We talk about our instant reaction to the news and what Shea Weber meant to the Montreal market, before moving on to Part 1 of our Friday mailbag, in which we answer questions such as: who is the next Montreal Canadien to get traded? Who would be a fun addition to the Habs coaching staff? What do we hope to get out of NHL Draft Weekend? And more!

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Laval Rocket run to the Calder Cup has finally come to an end as they lost in Game 7 to the Springfield Thunderbirds. Scott and Laura reflect on the crazy run that almost never happened, and why despite the loss they're optimistic heading into next season. The hosts also discuss the incredible play of Cayden Primeau and how these playoffs have helped to re-establish him as a true top prospect in the Canadiens system.

Speaking of prospects, the Memorial Cup is set, and Montreal has a trio of prospects vying for the CHL's top prize. The hosts break down the impressive rise of Kaiden Guhle as a player, and why they were both wrong with their initial assessments of him after he was drafted. They also take a look at an impressive Hamilton Bulldogs team featuring Jan Mysak and Arber Xhekaj, who clinched an OHL title. Scott however, has some reservations about Xhekaj at the professional level and if he can rein in his wild side next year.

Finally, Pierre LeBrun wrote an impressive piece detailing Kent Hughes' work at the NHL Trade Deadline, particularly with the Artturi Lehkonen trade to Colorado. Scott and Laura discuss how Hughes pulled off the deal, and why it underscores a strong deadline for the rookie GM. It also raises the question, did Joe Sakic get fleeced by Kent Hughes?

The Montreal Canadiens continue with their offseason moves by signing defenseman Otto Leskinen and we discuss what this means for the Laval Rocket as well as the Habs. The Rocket gear up for Game 7 in their Eastern Conference Final of the AHL Calder Cup playoffs and we praise the play of Cayden Primeau once again. Finally, we have a segment recorded with our friends at Locked On Flyers comparing the Canadiens' rebuild to the Flyers' "aggressive retool."

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The Locked on Canadiens crew are again joined by Russ and Rachel of Locked on Flyers to continue their discussion on the top prospects in the upcoming NHL Draft.

Up first is the likely first overall pick in Shane Wright, Scott and Laura are still adamant that Wright is the proper choice for the Montreal Canadiens in the upcoming draft. Russ also breaks down what makes Wright such a talented player, from his on-ice vision to his ability to be a leader for his OHL team off the ice as well. After that it's time for a discussion around Logan Cooley, who has the on-ice talent to be a challenger for a top three overall pick as well.

The hosts also discuss the pair of defenders in Simon Nemec and David Jiricek, and while Montreal isn't in a spot to draft one of them right now, they represent intriguing options if the Canadiens do decide to trade up. What makes Simon Nemec tick? How has Jiricek's physicality helped endear him to prospective teams in the draft?

To wrap it all up the four hosts debate the narrative surrounding Juraj Slafkovsky potentially going first overall over Shane Wright. Both Russ and Scott are in agreement that Slafkovsky has a ton of overall talent, but just isn't the fit the Canadiens need right now. They also debate the news that apparently Slafkovsky is open to playing centre, something he hasn't done in several years, evoking some memories of Jesperi Kotkaniemi's draft year.

As we get closer to the 2022 NHL Draft in Montreal, Locked On Flyers hosts Russ Cohen and Rachel Donner join us to give us tidbits from the Draft Combine in Buffalo, particularly as it pertains to the Canadiens. Russ was covering the combine and was able to speak to many of the players, and this is the first of a two-part draft prospect related episode, with the second episode, coming tomorrow, covering Shane Wright, Logan Cooley, Juraj Slafkovsky, Simon Nemec, Matthew Savoie, David Jiricek, and more.

We also recap the Laval Rocket games over the weekend as the series heads back to Springfield, and we discuss our respective nemeses of the week between our two shows. The officiating in both the NHL and the AHL playoffs leaves a lot to be desired so we touch on how the series between the Rocket and the Thunderbirds is getting out of control and Cayden Primeau, who has played extremely well behind the Rocket, ends up being the collateral damage.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Despite Martin St. Louis saying he was not going to make any changes to his coaching staff for the upcoming season. However, he might be forced to change that stance as Luke Richardson has popped up as a leading candidate for the Chicago Blackhawks coaching vacancy. Scott and Ian debate the pros and cons of Richardson potentially leaving, and if it's better to let him go to bring in a fresh view on the Canadiens' bench.

After that it's time for the Friday Mailbag! The hosts sit down to answer listener questions ranging from ranking Laval Rocket players, where will Chris Wideman play next year and who is going to announce the first overall pick? Also, plenty of discussion surrounding the Canadiens goaltending circles, what will they do with Jake Allen? Can Cayden Primeau be an NHL player next season? Will Carey Price even be able to play?
