Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

It's Friday, you know what that means...

The mailbag has returned and the hosts have a ton of questions to work through!

Scott and Laura design their own third jerseys for the Habs, and discuss what other sports they enjoy watching live besides hockey. Also, with the trade market being what it is right now, can Kent Hughes trade Joel Armia without retaining salary, or is it likely that the big Finn sticks around for the time being? With the Habs still his preferred destination, should Montreal be concerned about how quickly Pierre-Luc Dubois seems to lose interest in a city, and the hosts debate some listener trade thoughts, including Brendan Gallagher. Is there a market for a player like Gallagher coming off a down season, or is it wiser to keep the fan-favourite around for the rest of his contract?

With there still being an open place on the Canadiens bench, who might the Canadiens hire to fill the void left by Luke Richardson? If the Canadiens didn't exist, who would be the winningest franchise in NHL history, and who would the hosts cheer for? What would make up the Laura and Scott's ultimate ice cream cones, and so much more!

On today's episode, we discuss Stephane Waite telling TSN690 that he believes that Carey Price will be ready to play for the Montreal Canadiens next season, and that he may want to resume his career with a team closer to winning a Stanley Cup. We also discuss the report that Matthew Tkachuk has told the Calgary Flames he no longer wishes to remain in Calgary and how his trade demand will affect the demand for Habs players on the NHL trade market. Finally, we look at the Montreal Canadiens current centre depth and discuss whether Kirby Dach makes Christian Dvorak expendable.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Montreal has re-signed goaltender Samuel Montembeault for two years, and one million dollars per year! The bigger question now becomes, does this have an impact on Carey Price, and was Montembeault worth bringing back over giving Cayden Primeau a more extended NHL look? Scott and Laura take a look at the deal, and do their best to pass as experts on all things goaltending to make sense of the latest off-season move by the Habs.

Also, it's another special mailbag day! With so many questions last week the hosts pushed some to this week to give more detailed answers to their listener's questions. They'll take a look at whether the Habs should push for the playoffs if Carey Price is healthy, and whether or not a team can have too many good prospects. Also, what will it take to consider the trade for Kirby Dach a success, or what makes it a potential bust this year?

After a long wait, the Montreal Canadiens have finally found a partner for a Jeff Petry trade, shipping the defenceman, and forward Ryan Poehling to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Mike Matheson and a draft pick. At first glance it feels like a loss for the Canadiens as their top right side defender is shipped out of town, leaving just David Savard in that role. However, as the hosts take a look at his microstats and development trend, did Kent Hughes pull off a sneaky good bit of work? At the very least, the Canadiens freed up more cap room, which allowed them to make more moves over the weekend as well.

Namely, Montreal has re-signed Rem Pitlick to a two-year contract! After electing to not qualify the forward, thus avoiding arbitration, the Canadiens were able to bring him back on a very cheap $1.1million AAV contract for the next two years. Where does Pitlick slot into the lineup, and does his return slow the full-time NHL debuts of Jesse Ylönen and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard?

The Habs weren't the only busy team though, as the Laval Rocket made a slew of moves to get themselves ready for next season. Scott takes a look at the return of Gabriel Bourque to the Rocket, in addition to the new prospects joining the goaltending posse. Who is Philippe Desrosiers and Joe Vrbetic and where do they fit in the Montreal goaltending pipeline?

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes spoke to the media on Thursday following the beginning of NHL free agency on Wednesday. Scott and Laura take a look at the highlights of the press conference and try to figure out what's next for Montreal this summer. Hughes mentioned being patient in a trade involving Jeff Petry, with both hosts agreeing it's the proven right move. Also, what do they think about Hughes not so subtly implying he has expressed interest in trading for Pierre-Luc Dubois?

To round out the show, the hosts have brought back the mailbag, actually on a Friday this time! The hosts discuss the biggest surprises for this off-season so far, their favourite Habs and hockey related books, and the other Habs podcasts out in the world. Laura also breaks down what qualifying offers are and how they impact a player's contract status with a team, and so much more!

The Montreal Canadiens were not especially active on the first day of NHL free agency, however they did get a major contract on the books by signing Juraj Slafkovsky to his entry level contract. We talk about the final day of Habs development camp and some of the players with notable performances, such as Lane Hutson. We also discuss the depth players the Canadiens got on the books for one-year deals: Nate Schnarr, Joel Teasdale, Alex Belzile, Madison Bowey, Anthony Richard, and Mitchell Stephens. Finally, we discuss the cap space the Canadiens need to clear, the Ottawa Senators improvements, the Vegas Golden Knights perpetual race against the cap, and more.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens...Surprise, it's a live show!

Scott and Laura welcome Tony Ferrari back to the show to break down Montreal's 2022 NHL Draft, the good, the bad, and the overwhelmingly tall. The trio break down the stunning first overall selection of Juraj Slafkovsky at first overall, and why Habs fans should be thrilled about the towering winger. The hosts also ask Tony how the arrival of Kirby Dach fits in with the selection of Slafkovsky. How can Montreal put the first overall in the best position to succeed going forward, and where does Slafkovsky thrive on the ice?

Tony also shares his thoughts on noted Short King Lane Hutson, and why Montreal fans should be over the moon with the potential steal of the Draft. There's also plenty more on the rest of the draft class including Owen Beck, Vinzenz Rohrer and more!

To end the show Tony answers questions from the live chat as well! Did the Habs miss out on Jagger Firkus and Brad Lambert? Who is the steal of the Canadiens draft class? What do the hosts make of the Pierre-Luc Dubois rumours and more!

As we near NHL Free Agency, the Montreal Canadiens have taken care of many items on their to-do list. They started the day with signing Corey Schueneman to a one-year, two-way contract extension. They then extended Michael Pezzetta's contract for one year. Finally, they extended qualifying offers to Kirby Dach, Samuel Montembeault, Nate Schnarr, Cayden Primeau, and Joël Teasdale. However, they did not qualify Rem Pitlick. We share our thoughts as to why the Habs made the above choices. We also look at who might be available to the Habs in free agency on Wednesday. Plus: we've been asked to address Shane Wright's response to the Habs not drafting him first overall and we try to put the Wright vs Slafkovsky debate to bed once and for all.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

With all the dust finally settled and the NHL Draft now over with, Scott and Laura take some time to breakdown everything else involving the Canadiens following their trade for Kirby Dach. Who is Filip Mesar, and where can he fit into the hierarchy of the Canadiens prospect pyramid? Scott breaks down how the picks of Owen Beck and Lane Hutson make this year's Draft one of the most exciting for fans in a long time, and how it could turn out to be one of the best in recent history.

The hosts also take a look at the rest of the picks made for the rest of the Draft, and what the prospect experts around the league are saying. In particular the selections of Cedrick Guindon and Vinzenz Rohrer have drawn strong reviews for their tireless work ethic and could be potential steals for the Habs in the future. Scott also wonders if the seventh round selection of offensive dynamo Miguel Tourigny is the next in a line of late round picks to make their way through the Laval Rocket starting this season.

Finally, Scott and Laura give their own vibe checks on Montreal as a whole, and what they think is coming next with free agency just a few days away. Is Jeff Petry moving soon, or will a potential Josh Anderson trade develop first? With teams going all in on new goalies right now, is Jake Allen going to be moved despite not knowing the health of Carey Price?

The Montreal Canadiens have drafted Juraj Slafkovsky first overall in the 2022 NHL entry draft, and we have our initial reaction to this surprise pick, which made far more sense once General Manager Kent Hughes made his second big move of the night, trading Alexander Romanov to the Nee York Islanders and then using that trade to get Kirby Dach from the Chicago Blackhawks. We also briefly discus Filip Mesar, the Canadiens’s second pick in the first round.
