Locked On Canadiens - Daily Podcast on the Montreal Canadiens

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

The hosts welcome Scouching back to the show to discuss what the Montreal Canadiens can do with their other 13 picks in the NHL Draft, and what kind of philosophy the team should be using when trying to suss out potential gems in the NHL Draft. Scouch breaks down where the Habs have struggled in the past under previous GM's and what Kent Hughes can do to help modernize a team that has lagged behind a little bit in terms of NHL quality.

Scott then picks Scouch's brain on who he thinks the biggest risks are in the Draft, and who might be a hidden sleeper due to a variety of reasons. Scouch lists of his picks, and explains that a player being a risky pick doesn't mean there isn't still value to be found, and that someone picked 20th, who was ranked lower can still become a quality prospect if given the proper tending. The same goes for falling players or later picks, like a Brad Lambert or Seamus Casey, their value as the picks get higher in number can only increase, and for a team like Montreal they're well worth spending picks on if they have the chance.

On the flipside Laura wants to know more about how the Habs can use a modern analysis of the game to find a truly new-age defender who can bring some offensive upside and skill. Scouch outlines some names that would be on his list if he were the Habs, and why they fit the mold of where the team should be going. Players like Kaiden Guhle and Jordan Harris are great in their own right, but surrounding them with complimentary player type is something Montreal hasn't done in the past, but they can fix right now.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Scott and Laura welcome Will Scouch(@Scouching) to the show to discuss all manor of things related to the 2022 NHL Draft. The hosts want to know, is this class strong, or is the narrative that it's top heavy actually true? Scouch dives into the cycle that always surrounds the draft, breaking down what he thinks the overall level of this upcoming class is compared to previous years. While it lacks a potential superstar at first glance, there are still plenty of talented pieces to help build the prospect pool in Montreal.

Speaking of which, with the first overall pick, it's widely acknowledged that the Canadiens will select Shane Wright. The hosts ask Scouch about what makes Wright so good, and how he fits into Martin St. Louis' system in Montreal. Scouch also highlights where Shane Wright needs to improve to become a true standout at the NHL level, he's got talent, but there is still development ahead for the likely first overall pick.

Then, to change gears the other name circling the Canadiens is brought up in Juraj Slafkovsky, The big Slovakian winger has been a star on the international stage this year, but is he better than Shane Wright? The trio debate the merits of Slafkovsky's strong play in small samples, and whether or not the Canadiens can take the risk with the first overall pick. While Slafkovsky has more talent than some might admit, Scouch thinks taking him first overall might end up being a stretch too far for the Montreal Canadiens this year.

The Montreal Canadiens' American Hockey League affiliate, the Laval Rocket, are in the North Division Final of the AHL playoffs against the Rochester Americans, and so far they have been dominant, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in a best of five series. We talk about why Laval has been so good, and particularly single out Cayden Primeau, Danick Martel, Alex Belzile, and Gabriel Bourque as some of the reasons why the team has been so hard to play against in this series as it shifts to Rochester. We also touch on the Florida Panthers series loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Scott and Laura peak back into the insanity of the NHL playoffs and offer up some takes on the ongoing series. The Battle of Alberta is tied up heading into Game 3, Mike Smith managed to redeem himself, but Scott still doesn't know if he can keep it up in a seven game series.

Nazem Kadri had a water bottle thrown at him by Jordan Binnington after Kadri had accidentally collided with the Blues goalie and knocked him out of the game. Was the Kadri hit intentional, or was it a pure accident and his history of discipline is clouding people's judgement?

Arpon Basu of the Athletic wrote a detailed breakdown on Shane Wright, and both hosts agreeing that even with a potential lack of flash, Shane Wright appears to be a slam dunk fit for head coach Martin St. Louis. The hosts breakdown the article, and all the reasons why the team shouldn't galaxy brain this first overall pick, and just go with the Wright choice.

Then, to flip gears in the final segment the hosts galaxy brain *EVERYTHING* about the upcoming Canadiens' off-season thanks to a listener suggestion. Can the team acquire Filip Forsberg, while also shedding a ton of a cap space to make the contract work? Can Kent Hughes sweeten Shea Weber's contract enough to get a huge return from the Arizona Coyotes? Scott and Laura give their thoughts on a wildly fun hypothetical question.

With the Montreal Canadiens quiet over the last few days, we take the opportunity to catch up on the Laval Rocket and discuss how they have won a playoff series for the first time in their existence and are through to the North Division Finals in the AHL Calder Cup playoffs. With Cayden Primeau being a major factor in the series win, we also revisit some previous concerns we have had about his development and his future with the Habs. Finally, with Joel Bouchard a free agent again, some listeners and viewers have asked for our thoughts on whether the Habs should bring him back into the organization in a development role or on Martin St. Louis' coaching staff.

Joshua Roy has quickly become one of the Montreal Canadiens' most exciting prospects. Riley Kidney has been another Habs prospect to watch, particularly when it comes to his playmaking ability. Is Xavier Simoneau ready to take the next step and go to the Laval Rocket in the AHL next year? And finally, have we forgotten about William Trudeau? We cover all of this and more with Matt Drake of Habs Eyes on the Prize, and end the episode with Matt's thoughts on QMJHL prospects the Canadiens should have their eye on as they prepare for the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.

Inside today's Locked on Canadiens:

Shane Wright has been the consensus number one overall pick for nearly two years, so why exactly is there suddenly chatter that the Montreal Canadiens might not pick Wright at first overall? Scott and Laura discuss how this narrative appears every single year, and why the Canadiens would be wise to not galaxy brain this draft pick. They also look at what the team should do if they're not planning on drafting Wright, including trading down in the top five as needed.

The LA Kings and Boston Bruins have both been eliminated in seven games in their respective series, and the hosts reflect on the trajectory of the two franchises right now. LA is loaded with young prospects and some wily veterans, while Boston's core might be slowly aging it's way out. What does the series loss mean for Patrice Bergeron and his future in the NHL, mainly does it impact him even reaching free agency?

Finally, the Toronto Maple Leafs again fell short in a Game 7, this time against the Tampa Bay Lightning. In what was a coin flip of a series the Leafs again failed to get over the hump in the first round, but at the same time it wasn't the standard catastrophic meltdown like last year. Scott and Laura discuss the series as a whole, and try to figure out what the Leafs will do next this off-season.

Would the Montreal Canadiens trade the first overall pick, or try to obtain another top 10 pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft? The Habs have a lot of interesting decisions to make leading up to the draft and in the offseason. In our Friday Habs mailbag, we field questions about hypotheticals relating to the draft and trade, plus which Rocket players will be on the Canadiens next year. Plus, the Laval Rocket beat the Syracuse Crunch in the first every home playoff game in Rocket history, and have the chance to close out the series at home on Saturday so we touch on that.

The Montreal Canadiens are likely to pick Shane Wright of the Kingston Frontenacs first overall at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, and the future is bright. How will he fit into the Habs' plans? How will they develop him and where can he play? How does this change the short term and long term plans for Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton? And why are players who play at the centre position so highly coveted and highly touted? Andrew Berkshire of SDPN joins us to break it all down.
