The Miami Dolphins fall to 0-2 after a 35-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium — and the final score only tells part of the story. Miami actually controlled much of the first half. The Dolphins outgained San Francisco 166-125 before halftime, ran 35 plays to the 49ers' 20 and possessed the football for 19:17. De'Von Achane had 63 rushing yards by halftime, and Miami repeatedly moved into scoring position. But the Dolphins couldn't finish. Miami's first three scoring opportunities produced a missed field goal and two made field goals. San Francisco responded by scoring touchdowns on each of its first five possessions. Then the game exploded. The 49ers outscored Miami 21-0 in the third quarter, turning a competitive 14-6 halftime game into a 35-6 blowout. Brock Purdy finished 20-of-22 for 287 yards with two passing touchdowns, added 30 rushing yards and another touchdown, and Miami's defense had virtually no answer for Kyle Shanahan's offense. Even more alarming: Christian McCaffrey was held to just 23 rushing yards on 10 carries, yet San Francisco still scored 35 points. Malik Willis finished 14-of-23 for 197 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, but 77 of those yards and Miami's only touchdown came on a late connection with Ryan Miller with the Dolphins already trailing 35-6. Achane finished with 20 carries for 74 yards after Miami made a clear effort to feature him.
