Oregon Football is just two days away from a top-25 showdown with future Big 12 member BYU at Autzen Stadium. There are certainly concerns for the Ducks as they look to jumpstart their 2022 season, but there's hope for optimism as well playing at home in Eugene on Saturday. Still, the Cougars present a very real challenge for Dan Lanning and his staff as he coaches against his first ever top 25 team at home.

Oregon Football will do something this Saturday that hasn't happened in 8 years: welcome a ranked non-conference opponent to Autzen Stadium, coming in the form of the 12th-ranked BYU Cougars. Now the opportunity to pick up a ranked win to propel this 2022 season forward is right in front of Dan Lanning and the Ducks, and will give us a good idea of how this season might play out.

On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin looks at the challenge that BYU presents for the Ducks after their win against #9 Baylor last week. They are a team with an NFL-caliber quarterback in Jaren Hall, and their rushing attack presents a familiar face with an offensive line that's capable of running the ball.

On Saturday in a 70-14 rout of Eastern Washington, Oregon's Bo Nix threw for a career-high 5 touchdowns as the Ducks got Dan Lanning his first career victory as a head coach. Oregon Football bounced back and disposed of FCS opponent Eastern Washington 70-14 on Saturday. The score played out how Oregon fans hoped it would, with the Ducks pulling away from the start and never letting EWU have a chance to give Oregon a scare in Autzen stadium. That was the good part, because the Ducks still have areas where clear growth is needed heading into a game with a ranked BYU opponent this Saturday.

On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin looks at the first win of the Dan Lanning era. Scoring 70 points for the first time in several years gave Oregon fans an easy victory was a welcome sight for the offense, but the hot start was thanks in part to the caliber of their opponent. The offensive execution and continuity has to improve before the Cougars come to Autzen stadium on Saturday.

QB Ty Thompson saw a decent amount of action, much to the delight of Duck fans--what did we learn about Oregon's backup QB? Still, the game was overwhelmingly filled with positives and individual standouts who Oregon fans have been excited about since before the season started. Troy Franklin had a career-high 10 receptions, a stat that the Ducks have not seen from a wide receiver in 3 years. Spencer discusses other standouts including TE Terrance Ferguson and RB Sean Dollars.

In search of a bounce back opportunity to forget the memory of a blowout loss to Georgia, Oregon Football has its lone FCS opponent on the schedule this week. The Eagles of Eastern Washington travel to Eugene for the 2nd all-time meeting between UO and EWU, with the 2015 matchup ending in a 61-42 win for the Ducks. Oregon Football was embarrassed in week 1 against the Georgia Bulldogs, but that outcome does not mean the 2022 season is destined to end as a total failure/disappointment. The Ducks can still achieve a lot in 2022 with 2 non-conference games left (including #21 BYU) before conference play. For Oregon to be successful the rest of the season, the one thing they will need will have to come on both the coaching staff and from players: individual leaders to bring the team through this (hopefully brief) rough patch.

On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by Rian Winter (@SportsChat503) to discuss how the Ducks can move forward and succeed in Dan Lanning's first season at the helm. RB Sean Dollars talked about how in 2019 after a season-opening loss to Auburn in Dallas, a game Oregon should have won, the Ducks drew on leadership from players like Justin Herbert and Troy Dye to help propel them to an eventual Pac-12 Championship and Rose Bowl victory. Rian shares his thoughts on who some of those players might be for the Ducks in 2022.

This week's game against a good FCS team in Eastern Washington presents an opportunity for the Ducks' players to get some of there swagger back. Oregon is heavily favored, as they should be, and the first step to a successful 2022 season for Oregon is beating this team like they should. Finally, Rian discusses what he saw from Bo Nix in week 1 against Georgia and what to expect from the Oregon quarterback going forward.

Bo Nix, much like he did at his previous stop at Auburn, has already begun to divide the Oregon Football fanbase with his play on the field. He finished Saturday's game 21/37 for 173 yards, 0 touchdowns and 2 interceptions for a QBR of 58.9 (out of 100). He also ran 8 times for 36 yards, and despite this (hopefully) not being his best game as a QB, Duck fans should not rush to call for him to be benched.

On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin discusses the week 1 performance of Oregon QB Bo Nix. There are things Nix did well, but mostly it was an overall negative day for the offense--a theme that can not be solely blamed on the Ducks' quarterback throwing two interceptions and failing to find the endzone. The offense, including Nix, should be given time to develop under a brand new staff and first-time play-caller in OC Kenny Dillingham.

The Ducks' defense got some bad news unfortunately, DT and 2021 First-Team All-Pac 12 performer Popo Aumavae will be out for the season. He did not play against Georgia and now leaves a permanent void on the defensive line after coming into 2022 as a returning starter. Spencer goes through some of the names who will need to step up in his absence for the defense to turn it around in this 2022 season.

Chip Kelly, Nick Saban, and Brian Kelly all have something in common: they've coached in national championship games, and they all have had rocky beginnings to successful tenures as head coaches--with Kelly's coming over the weekend in a 24-23 loss to Florida State. Oregon Football is now hoping Dan Lanning's coaching career will follow a similar trajectory after getting blasted over the weekend in Atlanta in his coaching debut. How things feel in week 1-2 are rarely how they are portrayed by fans at the end of the year.

On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin deals with the fallout from a 49-3 loss over the weekend to the Georgia Bulldogs. Chip Kelly's first game as Oregon's HC ended in abject disaster beyond the 19-8 loss on the field to Boise St, Nick Saban lost to UL-Monroe, and over the weekend Brian Kelly's debut with LSU was a very sloppy loss--specifically on special teams. Week 1 of a season is best suited for observations, not conclusions--which is why the confidence that Duck fans had entering 2022 should still mostly be in tact.

Was there anything encouraging for Duck fans to hold on to from the weekend heading into a week 2 matchup with Eastern Washington? The running back room has depth, the offensive line (mostly) held up against the best defensive front they will see all year, and the special teams looked improved from a week ago. Did anything else look encouraging for the 2022 season?

Oregon Football was bludgeoned by the Georgia Bulldogs 49-3 in the Chick-fil-a Kickoff Game on Saturday, one of the worst losses for the Ducks in recent memory. It was about as bad of a start as Oregon could have had to the 2022 season under 1st-year HC Dan Lanning, There were more negative aspects to the game than Duck fans would have liked, but what was the most concerning in a time where it's paramount to not overreact to week 1, even a blowout such as this?

On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by Max Torres, covering the Ducks for Fan Nation at Sports Illustrated and host of the 'Ducks Dish' podcast. They discuss some of the many things that went wrong for Dan Lanning and co. down in Atlanta on Saturday, and why Kirby Smart's comment about Georgia having better players was warranted. However, it's also important to point out that there was a coaching mismatch in this game as well.

The offense had struggles, failing to manage a touchdown, but after the first two drives it didn't appear that would be the case. Bo Nix and the offense were able to move the ball very early in the game, but turnovers and poor execution thwarted multiple scoring opportunities. Judging the entire team on this grand WEEK ONE challenge is not the best way to assess how Oregon's season may end up in 2022.

The College Football Board of Directors has approved a 12-team playoff format to begin in 2026. For the Oregon Ducks, this doesn't have wide-reaching ramifications. The path to returning to the National Championship game remain the same whether the playoff is 2 teams or 64. More details are sure to follow in the coming days.
