Oregon Football controlled its own destiny to the College Football Playoff in 2021, with the only teams standing in their being Utah and Oregon State. Though they took care of the Beavs, 2 blowout losses in 3 weeks to the Utes left a sour taste in the mouths of Duck fans as a season that once had much promise came to a screeching halt. Oregon fans are hoping that a new QB (Bo Nix) and a new HC (Dan Lanning) will allow the Ducks to be more competitive against Utah than last year, when they were outscored 76-17 in two games--including the Pac-12 Championship Game in Las Vegas.

He feels that even with a first-year HC and a new quarterback, the Ducks will have enough players who remember the 2 beatdowns from 2021 to rile up the troops and rally to a win. JT lays out who the offensive standouts figure to be for Utah this year, especially in light of the loss of WR Britain Covey who was a very reliable target for QB Cam Rising last year.

JT, as a Utah fan, has a lot of confidence in the schematical changes Oregon HC Dan Lanning will be able to make in this year's matchup, and that along with Oregon's veteran offensive line could be huge boons to the Ducks as they try to avenge their blowout losses from last year. In what figures to be a matchup of top 15 caliber teams when they meet in late November, it has the potential to live up to the billing as the premier game in the Pac-12 in 2022 and have national ramifications as well.

Since joining the Pac-12 in 2011, Colorado Football has had just two winning seasons in the conference of champions. Oregon Football's 2021 matchup with the Cal Golden Bears saw a 1-4 Cal team give a heavily-favored Oregon team fits in Autzen stadium that led to a very unfamiliar vibe inside the Ducks' stadium in Eugene. The last decade or so has had a couple of crazy games between the two schools, but on the whole it's been a series dominated by Oregon. That word, dominate, is one that the Ducks should be able to say after they travel to Berkeley this October if they play to their potential.

On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by Rian Winter (@SportsChat503) to talk about the Ducks' matchup with the Golden Bears in 2022. Both sides of the ball should, in theory, be stronger than a season ago for the Ducks with their new coaching staff--led primarily by the schematic prowess of Dan Lanning on the defensive side of the ball. That combined with the Bears losing multi-year starting QB Chase Garbers should set up an opportunity for the Ducks to keep Cal's scoring to a minimum.

One area that caused Oregon fans great frustration last year was the lack of a consistent downfield passing game to create explosive plays on offense. With Bo Nix and new OC Kenny Dillingham, the opportunity could be ripe for the Ducks to utilize some of their young weapons like WR Dont'e Thornton to try and create some chunk plays and easier scoring drives.

Last year's game with UCLA followed a familiar trend for Oregon Football in the 2021 season. Though the game in LA against the Bruins featured a slow start, the Ducks built a 34-17 lead early in the fourth quarter only to eventually need a game-sealing interception against the Bruins' backup quarterback to walk away with a 34-31 victory. Oregon Football has won 3 consecutive games against Washington State after the Cougars had racked up 4 straight wins over Oregon from 2015-18. This year the two Pac-12 North contenders face off in their conference opener on September 24th in Washington State's home stadium. Oregon will surely be favored against WSU again this year, but this being a road game still makes it ripe for being a "trap game" on Oregon's 2022 football schedule.

A game that ended 38-24 in 2021 was a 24-17 Oregon lead with just under 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter before the Ducks ran for a couple of late touchdowns to win by 14. The fact that last year's game was closer than the final score indicated could be a good sign for the Ducks as they battle the Cougars on the road this year.

The units that will have to step up the most in this year's matchup with Washington State are the offensive line, specifically in pass protection, and the secondary. The Cougars' new QB Cam Ward could very well be an upgrade over Jayden de Laura, the 2021 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, meaning the Ducks' secondary will have to be able to cover at a high level to keep WSU's offense in check. Oregon Football's 2022 non-conference schedule is one of the toughest in the Pac-12, starting with a week 1 meeting against the defending national champions in Georgia. Oregon Football is no stranger to playing a high-profile team in a nationally televised non-conference matchup early in the season. 2022 features another game in which the Ducks will take the national stage, this time challenging the reigning national champion Georgia Bulldogs. Together they preview the impending matchup between their two schools, which is now less than a month away. Clint adamantly states that if Bo Nix is indeed the starter for the Ducks on September 3rd in Atlanta, the quarterback position won't carry Oregon to a win given his history against Georgia. Though he's confident Georgia will win the game, he's less confident than many in the national media and shares how a game would play out in which the Ducks are victorious.

Oregon's young playmakers, specifically the wide receivers, will have to step up un a major way for Oregon to pull the upset. One area that may give Duck fans some hope is the fact that Georgia lost 15 players to the NFL after their national championship season, including 5 first-round picks (plus Nakobe Dean in the 3rd round). Though a step back from last year's historic defense is expected, the drop off may not be as severe as many would think.

When Dan Lanning was hired away from Georgia to be Oregon Football's head coach, Duck fans rightly began to envision high-level defenses coming to Eugene. That has to start on the recruiting trail, and the Ducks are now sitting at #15 nationally in recruiting according to 247Sports after landing 2 verbal commitments on the defensive line. Those names are 3-star DL My'Keil Gardner and 4-star DL Terrance Green, bringing the 2023 verbal commitment total to 13 players.
