Going into Oregon Football's Spring Game, there were players at every unit that Duck fans were excited to see. From Seven McGee transitioning to WR (from RB) to Trikweze Bridges and Bryan Addison's respective emergences in the secondary, there were plenty of headlines going in. Now that the game has passed, there are even more names who drew attention in a positive manner based on their on-field performance last Saturday at Autzen Stadium.

One of the headlines going into Oregon Football's 2022 Spring Game was the status of the quarterback room after Auburn transfer Bo Nix came in during the offseason. Thus far in Spring Practice, we have seen the 3 quarterbacks (Bo Nix, Ty Thompson, and Jay Butterfield) take reps in a way that indicates there is not yet an official starting quarterback. After Saturday's game, what became pretty clear is something many have thought for a while: Bo Nix is the leader in the clubhouse to be the starting QB as Spring Football comes to a close.

On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin takes a look at some of the players who stood out the most from this past Saturday in Autzen Stadium. Yesterday's show featured a discussion on 3 highlight-reel caliber players in WRs Seven McGee/Dont'e Thornton along with OLB DJ Johnson. Today, a look at how 4-star true freshman Jahlil Florence, UCLA transfer WR Chase Cota, and LB Jackson LaDuke showcased their talent to over 42,000 fans on a sunny afternoon in Eugene.

Though the game left fans with an overall feeling of positivity and hope, it was certainly far from perfect (as Dan Lanning has accurately noted). The tight ends have a lot of promise this season for the Ducks, but struggled with some drops on Saturday. 2nd-team All-Pac 12 kicker Camden Lewis missed a couple of field goals, but did show some potential improvement in the kickoff game.

Without an official word on Will Richardson and N'Faly Dante, Oregon Basketball recently found out one more returning piece. Rovaldo Soares, a first-year with the Ducks this past year after playing at the JUCO level, is coming back to Dana Altman's team for the 2022-23 season. He never found a consistent role this past season, but could still do so next year.

Oregon Football had its first Spring Game of the Dan Lanning era, featuring a strong showing of over 42,000 fans at Autzen stadium--the first Spring Game fans have seen since 2019. After a season in which the downfield passing game was limited with Anthony Brown at quarterback, Bo Nix completed a 70-yard pass to WR Seven McGee on the first play from scrimmage. In a game where many had questions about how the offense would look, we got insight on how Oregon's offense will operate under new OC Kenny Dillingham. Including, to the delight of some Duck fans, snapping the ball to the QB from under center.

Several players impressed with standout performances, most of them on the offensive side of the ball with plenty of explosive plays. Dont'e Thornton showed some traits to former Cal WR DeSean Jackson with two long touchdowns, going over 100 yards receiving on just 3 catches. Seven McGee, who has said he idolized RB/WR De'Anthony Thomas growing up, showed an explosive versatility that was reminiscent of one of Oregon Football's most explosive offensive players.

On the defensive side of the ball, Dan Lanning has stressed the improvement that still needs to be made, and that was evident on Saturday. Though some forced turnovers made for some highlight moments, the aforementioned explosive plays came at the defense's expense. Still, a couple players on that side of the ball stood out--most notably DJ Johnson (LB/DE) who showed a lot of promise.

Dan Lanning has stressed that Saturday, April 23rd is not just the Spring Game for Oregon Football--but rather a day-long showcase of Oregon athletics that factor into recruiting in a major way. Several high-profile recruits, including 5-star DE Jayden Wayne (2023), are expected to be at Autzen Stadium this weekend. What other (potential) future Ducks will be on campus to see the first Spring Game of the Dan Lanning era?

On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by John Garcia Jr., the recruiting director for Sports Illustrated. They talk about the biggest names that will be in attendance this Saturday, and where Oregon stands in their recruiting process as they continue to build the Class of 2023. Over 20 high school recruits will be in attendance, including multiple 5-stars in next year's recruiting class.

Wrapping up the positional previews for the game this weekend, two defensive units remain to examine: Linebackers, and defensive backs. In the secondary, DBs Coach Demetrice Martin has talked about the positional versatility of guys like Trikweze Bridges and Bryan Addison--both have impressed through spring practice thus far playing safety. With a recent injury (not expected to be serious) to Dontae Manning, Duck fans will probably get a look at lesser-known CBs on Saturday like Avante Dickerson, Darren Barkins, and maybe even 4-star freshman Jahlil Florence.

When it comes to offensive skill positions, Dan Lanning comes into his first year with Oregon Football with seemingly more questions than answers. The wide receiver room has lost its top 4 contributors heading into the 2021 season last year: Johnny Johnson III, Jaylon Redd, Devon Williams, and Micah Pittman. Kris Hutson has the most experience with the Ducks after ending his freshman campaign VERY strong, and UCLA transfer WR Chase Cota brings a veteran presence to a young and talented position group.

There have been calls amongst Duck fans to "unleash the skinnies" in reference to Don'te Thornton and Troy Franklin, who are 6'4" and 6'2" respectively. Could one of them step up and fill the role that 6'4" Devon Williams has fulfilled the last couple of seasons as a big-body receiver who lines up out wide? With Bo Nix (potentially) behind center this year, having that threat on the outside would be a boon to Oregon's offense under new OC Kenny Dillingham.

Tight ends may not be the flashiest position on the football field, but for Oregon it is perhaps their deepest and most talented position group on either side of the ball. Amongst an impressive list of players that include Terrance Ferguson, Spencer Webb, and Moliki Matavao, it can be easy to forget about guys like Cam McCormick and Patrick Herbert. They provide Oregon with great depth at tight end, but also have themselves set up for a competitive battle to make their way up the depth chart. Long-term, it could be very difficult to keep them all in Eugene.

In the trenches, the offensive line has seen several departures in recent weeks. Still, a strong and experienced core of run/pass blockers remain for the Ducks in 2022 led by guys like Alex Forsyth, Steven Jones, TJ Bass, Ryan Walk, and other familiar names. On the defensive line, there are some assurances like Brandon Dorlus, Popo Aumavae, and Bradyn Swinson (who might need to step up as an edge player). But there are some questions, as well.

Oregon Football has some uncertainty looking ahead to the Fall at a couple of positions for Dan Lanning and his staff. In the eyes of some Oregon fans, running back is not one of those groups. Byron Cardwell Jr. is the most experienced running back on the roster, which is not saying much compared to guys like Sean Dollars, Noah Whittington, and 4-star freshman Jordan James. It's possible the coaches, specifically OC Kenny Dillingham, are looking for a certain type of RB that might cater more heavily to one guy or the other.

An official depth chart has not been released by Dan Lanning and the Oregon coaching staff, meaning plenty of positions could still have open competitions. Byron Cardwell Jr. will not be handed the keys to the kingdom as Oregon Football's #1 running back if Sean Dollars is fully healthy. After emerging last season after an injury, it's possible one of the lesser-discussed RBs who will be seen in the Spring Game on Saturday, April 23rd could have to step up the way Cardwell did in 2021 for the Ducks.

Oregon Men's Basketball continues to get clarity with regards to what their roster will look like next season, picking up former Colorado PG Keeshawn Barthelemy via the transfer portal. The sophomore (with 3 years of eligibility) averaged 11 points per game last year while shooting 35% from beyond the arc, while starting 28 of 33 games for the Colorado Buffaloes. His arrival confirms the return of Quincy Guerrier, but leaves the future of Will Richardson very much unclear.

Dan Lanning picked up another highly-rated recruit when 4-star WR Kyler Kasper surprised many by committing to the Ducks over Tennessee. The Gilbert, AZ native becomes the latest recruit from the Grand Canyon state to decide to play his college ball in Eugene, joining a list of rock solid players Oregon has had come through the program in past years. His commitment demonstrates another encouraging sign on the recruiting trail, as Oregon landed him despite not having a major QB commit in 2022 or the Class of 2023.

Oregon Basketball and Dana Altman still have roster questions going into the 2022-23 season. With the team's leading scorer from this past year, Will Richardson, still undecided on his future, it's logical to be exploring potential roster additions. In recent weeks, former Oregon State PG Jarod Lucas and Colorado G Keeshawn Barthelemy entered the transfer portal. Both averaged 10+ppg last year, and the Ducks would be wise to keep an eye on the off-season recruitment of both.

Oregon Football has picked up another recruiting victory under Dan Lanning and his first-year staff, their second big piece of news on the recruiting trail in the last week after snagging 5-star OL Josh Connerly. This time, 4-star WR Kyler Kasper announced his commitment to the Ducks after Tennessee was seen as a likely landing spot. The Gilbert, AZ native chose Oregon over Tennessee, Arizona, Cal, and Arizona State.

Originally a top-130 player in the Class of 2023, Kasper announced he will be re-classifying to the Class of 2022. With the physical tools and football skills that Kasper presents, he has the potential to be a true #1 outside wide receiver in the coming years for the Ducks and Head Coach Dan lanning. Plus, what he does without the ball should remind Oregon fans of Johnny Johnson III and have them excited about the sort of attitude he will bring to the wide receiver room.

Heading into 2022, Oregon Football's offensive line is arguably the most well-rounded unit on either side of the ball for first-year HC Dan Lanning and OC Kenny Dillingham. In this era of college football where recruiting is a 24/7/365 job, it's never too soon to think about who will protect future Oregon QBs alongside recent 5-star commit Josh Connerly. Recently, former 5-star OL (C) recruit Clay Webb entered the transfer portal, opting to leave the Georgia Football program. Could Dan Lanning use his ties to the Bulldogs to try and bring him to Eugene? It might be a tough sell, but it's not impossible.

On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by John Garcia Jr., the director of recruiting for Sports Illustrated. John speaks to the ramifications of 5-star OL Josh Connerly Jr. committing to Oregon over other big-name schools including USC, Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Washington. Despite some concerns about Connerly only weighing 283lbs, which is a relatively low weight for an offensive lineman, Duck fans should not worry about his ability to quickly bulk up once he gets to Oregon. Oregon Football landed its highest-rated recruit in the Class of 2022 last week when 5-star OL Josh Connerly Jr. committed to the Ducks over USC, Miami, Michigan, Washington, and Michigan.
