Oregon Football has landed its fifth verbal commitment for the 2023 recruiting class. 4-star WR Ashton Cozart, a former Oklahoma commit, flipped to Dan Lanning and the Ducks on Sunday and joins fellow 23' 4-star WR Jurrion Dickey as future playmakers on the perimeter. Who they might one day be catching passes from is still up in the air with the looming commitments of 5-star QBs Jayden Rashada and Dante Moore. Cozart should remind Oregon fans of current WR (and former 4-star recruit) Troy Franklin, a player poised for a major leap forward in 2022.

Starting with the 2022 season, winning the Pac-12 North will no longer automatically get Oregon Football a berth in the Pac-12 championship game. The conference announced that rather than the two division winners, the championship game will be played between the two teams with the highest conference winning percentage. If this rule had always been the case, multiple Oregon Football teams from the last decade would have had the opportunity to play for a conference crown.

On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin looks at how Oregon Football is impacted by a conference-wide change from new commissioner George Kliavkoff. This move will eventually cause a shift in how Pac-12 games are scheduled, assuming divisions do in fact go away one day as this sort of move would indicate. Recent 4-star RB commit Dante Dowdell could be compared to several past Oregon running backs, but Royce Freeman may very well be his best comparison. Recent odds have Oregon Football as the 2nd-most likely team to win the Pac-12 in 2022, ahead of Utah and behind USC. Dan Lanning and Oregon Football have gotten their fourth verbal commitment for the Class of 2023. This time it comes in the form of 4-star RB Dante Dowdell, a standout at Picayune Memorial HS in Mississippi. He chose the Ducks over Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Tennessee after rushing for over 2,500 yards this past season.

On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin looks at the lates commitment for Dan Lanning and co. in the Class of 2023. Directly competing with and winning recruiting battles against SEC schools for a player down in the heart of the nation's top conference is another sign this staff can recruit at a high level. As Oregon Football's recruiting pursuits continue, Dan Lanning and co. have plenty of time to fill out their first full cycle for the Class of 2023--and plenty of players are already in their sights. One name popping up as of late has been 2023 3-star RB Roderick Robinson II, a former teammate of Oregon DBs Jahlil Florence and Jalil Tucker. Florence has already chipped in on Robinson's recruitment, lobbying hard for his former teammate from Lincoln HS in San Diego, CA to come and join him in Eugene.

With 9 transfer portal additions this offseason, Dan Lanning and Oregon Football are clearly embracing the potential that the portal has to improve your team immediately. With 2 top-returners on the interior DL (Brandon Dorlus, Popo Aumavae) and 3 transfers at the same spot, could the Ducks REALLY look to add another player at that position? They just might, as defensive standout DT Jermayne Lole from Arizona State is scheduled to take a visit to Oregon in June among other schools interested in him.

Jermayne Lole is a high-impact player in the Pac-12, but with all of their depth on the DL it's hard to see Oregon emerging as the team to potentially land him. However, reports say that NIL will play a factor and that could give Oregon a boost in his portal recruitment.

Dana Altman sparingly used the transfer portal during the first 5-6 years of his tenure with Oregon, but has brought in more players from other schools in recent years. Some have performed very well like Chris Duarte and Chris Boucher, while others like Amauri Hardi and Shakuir Juiston didn't live up to the hype. Oregon Football has had over 10 players leave the program this offseason via the transfer portal and have brought in 9 players from other schools. With the one-time freebee rule in place, it's better for the Ducks to be over-involved in the portal than under utilizing the acquisition of transfers. This year is probably one of the busiest Oregon will see in the portal because of the coaching change from Mario Cristobal to Dan Lanning.

Some of the players who have left hardly saw the field over the last year or so, whereas a couple were regular starters for the Ducks. That's a trend that's likely to continue, and that same variance in production should be expected for the players who come to Oregon from other programs.

Oregon Basketball added another backcourt transfer recently in South Carolina guard Jermaine Couisnard (KOOS-nard). Dana Altman and co. have brought in transfers over the years with varying degrees of success, and Couisnard could be one who thrives in Eugene. He jogs the memory of a past transfer, Dylan Ennis, who helped Oregon reach its first Final Four under Dana Altman in the 2016-17 season.
