With Dan Lanning at the helm, the early returns on recruiting for Oregon Football have been very strong and expectations for the sorts of players Lanning and his staff will bring in are growing. In the relatively isolated Pacific Northwest, sometimes recruiting can be more difficult when convincing players to travel far from home. One specific area to follow in recruiting is what sorts of states this staff will be able to utilize to bring in high-caliber players to Eugene.

On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by John Garcia Jr., director of recruiting for Sports Illustrated, to give insight on Oregon's latest 2023 recruiting pursuits. He shares his thoughts on which states Oregon could have success in given the potential recruiting prowess of this new staff. If Oregon is going to build on the success of the Mario Cristobal staff and bring in top-10 caliber recruiting classes nationally, the Ducks will have to find success in a variety of states, many coming from the south with coaching staff ties down there.

When Chip Kelly took over as Oregon's head football coach in 2009, his signature win came during the regular season at Autzen Stadium. On Halloween Night and a blackout Autzen Stadium, Chip Kelly's Ducks demoralized Pete Carroll's USC Trojans 47-20 and brought themselves onto the national stage in College Football. Now, after USC hit rock bottom in 2021 going 4-8, those two programs could once again be poised for nationally televised showdowns.

Yesterday's episode featured a discussion of the pros and cons for Oregon Football should USC return to prominence under HC Lincoln Riley. On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin goes back in time to look at some of the biggest wins Oregon has attained over USC on the gridiron. Most notable in 2009 on Halloween Night, there have been some big-time showdowns between the (now) 2 biggest brands on the west coast in college football. Spencer's favorite moment of the Chip Kelly era, in fact, came in the LA Coliseum in the 2010 regular season--among many memorable performances in Oregon-USC football games.

Will Richardson has still not formally announced his plans for the 2022-23 college basketball season, but other Ducks have for Dana Altman. Quincy Guerrier, after testing the NBA Draft waters, will indeed be back for Oregon next season. He avoids making the mistakes of past Duck basketball players who left for the pro ranks before they had maximized their potential in college to succeed in the pros.

When Chip Kelly was the head coach of Oregon Football, the years that featured regular season matchups with USC always had a big circle on the calendar. The Trojans bottomed out in 2022 going 4-8 and firing Clay Helton, but now have reloaded with former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley. They figure to be a major player in the coming years in the Pac-12 with Riley at the helm, and that might not be all bad news for the Ducks.

The second JUCO player that Dana Altman and Oregon Basketball are adding in the Class of 2022 is Brennan Rigsby. A skinny 6'3" shooter from Northwest Florida State College, it might be tough at first for him to carve out a major role on the roster. Oregon has, however, had success at that school before--it is the former alma mater of Indiana Pacers SG/SF Chris Duarte, who had a sensational career with the Ducks.

After coming over from a great defensive program in Cal, Tim Deruyter had Duck fans feeling like there wouldn't be much of a drop off after losing Andy Avalos to Boise St (where he became the HC). Instead, there were real areas of weakness for the Ducks defensively in 2021 that contributed to a disappointing end to the season. Despite question marks in the secondary, Oregon's defense could still take a leap forward in 2022 compared to last year.

On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin examines the statistical performance of Oregon's defense last year and where they most need to improve. The passing defense stands out as an area for growth, but there are two other areas where Oregon was even worse: third down and the red zone. Dana Altman has found some serious success in the past bringing in JUCO players to Eugene, including Chris Duarte and Chris Boucher. Tyrone Williams, coming to Eugene by way of Grayson County College in TX, should be another NJCAA transfer that has Oregon fans' attention. One reason Dan Lanning has Oregon Football fans excited about his hire is that his defense at Georgia last year with Kirby Smart was one of the best the sport has seen in recent memory. With the flurry of offensive coaches hired in recent years, the Ducks may very well be one of the few programs in the country that has a defense-first approach to winning games. 4-star WR in the Class of 2023 is the latest Oregon Duck recruit to "flip" from another school, joining 2022 4-star RB Jordan James--who was originally committed to Georgia. The Ducks have also had players flip their commitments in the other direction and opt not to come to Eugene. The process for changing a recruit's final destination can get underway sooner than many fans probably think in the recruiting process and timeline.

Ashton Cozart is a little raw as a WR prospect, but has blazing speed and projects as a downfield threat. Cozart hails from the state of Texas, but the Ducks' recruiting interests are heading even further east with 23' 5-star OL Samson Okunlola (from Massachusetts) now on their radar.

Oregon Football continues to land offensive skill players in the Class of 2023, despite not having a high-end QB recruit who has committed to the Ducks. Oregon remains in pursuit of 2023 5-star QBs Dante Moore and Jayden Rashada and appear squarely in the mix for both. Oregon Football has landed its fifth verbal commitment for the 2023 recruiting class. 4-star WR Ashton Cozart, a former Oklahoma commit, flipped to Dan Lanning and the Ducks on Sunday and joins fellow 23' 4-star WR Jurrion Dickey as future playmakers on the perimeter. Starting with the 2022 season, winning the Pac-12 North will no longer automatically get Oregon Football a berth in the Pac-12 championship game. The conference announced that rather than the two division winners, the championship game will be played between the two teams with the highest conference winning percentage. If this rule had always been the case, multiple Oregon Football teams from the last decade would have had the opportunity to play for a conference crown.
