According to a report from 247Sports, Dan Lanning and his staff have, for the third time, convinced an Oregon Football player who put his name in the portal to stay with the school. 4-star Class of 2021 safety Daymond David took an official visit to Florida State, but it seems he has decided to return to the Ducks. Kristian Williams, however, a former 3-star defensive lineman, has left the program and is headed to Missouri to play for the Tigers.

Reports are that 5-star 2023 QB and Oregon Football recruit Jayden Rashada is going to push back his commitment date originally scheduled for June 18th. John Garcia Jr,. Sports Illustrated's director of recruiting, has said in the past he believes this would have given Oregon a better shot at the highly-coveted signal caller who's largely looking at southern schools. The Ducks have been hoping to get one of Jayden Rashada or Dante Moore (5-star recruits) or perhaps Avery Johnson (4-star) who will be on campus this weekend--and is a superb athlete at the quarterback position. *NOTE*--Since this episode was recorded, Rashada has cut down his list of schools and Oregon did not make the cut.

Every coaching staff is trying to find an identity ON the field with regards to how they play and their philosophy of how to win football games. The same applies to the recruiting trail as each coaching staff tries to mold their rosters into their visions that best fit their schemes to win on Saturdays in the Fall. For Dan Lanning and Tosh Lupoi, arguably the two most well-established recruiters on the Oregon Football staff, that approach is likely to start on the defensive side of the ball.

On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by John Garcia Jr., director of recruiting for sports illustrated. The Ducks should expect Lanning and co. to recruit at a high level when it comes to defensive prospects, but expectations should be managed--there isn't likely ever going to be a singular team that is as talented on the defensive side of the ball as the 2021-22 Georgia Bulldogs. Still, Oregon should be able to bring in plenty of talented guys on that side of the ball. That's not to overlook the offensive recruiting potential, which thanks to assistants like Junior Adams and Carlos Locklyn is off to a great start with this new staff.

To help with future depth on the offensive line, Oregon has added a JUCO prospect to its roster for this year who could potentially have a nice amount of upside. Brayden Zolkoske, an Oregon native, started his career at the non-Division 1 level--and at 6'7" 310lbs will now get a chance to potentially earn some playing time with the Ducks for the next two seasons. He's certainly big enough to be on the field, the question is whether or not he's too big--even as an offensive tackle--to keep up with the speed of the power 5 football game.

At this point in the recruiting process, most of the recruiting wins and verbal commitments Oregon Football has landed have come from the offensive side of the ball. Players like 5-star OL Josh Connerly, 4-star WR Kyler Kasper, 4-star WR Jurrion Dickey, and 4-star RB Dante Dowdell have given Duck fans optimism about the playmakers they could have offensively in the coming years. Dan Lanning, as a national-champion defensive coordinator, has high expectations for the sorts of defensive players he will eventually get to commit to Oregon as well.

Oregon has landed its latest verbal commitment in the Class of 2023 as Lanning and co. look to build out their first full recruiting class. 4-star DB (safety) Kodi Decambra committed to Oregon over other Pac-12 schools including conference rivals Oregon State and Washington. Decambra, an athlete who's listed primarily as a safety, plays one of the positions that the Ducks might be needing bodies for in the immediate future.

Oregon Football has won the Pac-12 recruiting battle for four years in a row, with a lot of talented players both having come through and currently on the roster. The Class of 2023, though far from complete, Oregon has already landed talented verbal commitments and is still going after big-time recruits. The pursuit of a big-named quarterback recruit continues for the Ducks, and over the weekend 5-star QBs Jayden Rashada and Dante Moore showcased their talents at Overtime's 7v7 Tournament in Las Vegas.

Oregon Football is still waiting on their next high school QB commit as a progrum, with Jayden Rashada and Dante Moore still very much in the Ducks' sights as they look for a future signal caller. With other schools hot on the trail for both of those recruits as well, the Ducks are keeping their QB recruiting options open. A name that has recently emerged as a potential candidate, who scheduled an official visit with the ducks, is 4-star 2023 quarterback Avery Johnson from the state of Kansas. Kansas State may currently be in the lead for Johnson, but Oregon is far from out of the mix for the hyper-athletic QB.

Over the last 4 years under Mario Cristobal, the recruiting prowess of Oregon Football got to heights it had never seen before--culminating in the program's highest-rated class of all time in 2021 (#6 nationally). One way they rose to power on the recruiting trail was by hitting California harder than ever before, bringing in big-time recruits like Justin Flowe and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Now that USC has Lincoln Riley, that sort of success in the state of California will be much more challenging to maintain.

On this episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin is joined by Max Torres of Sports Illustrated. Oregon has a bevy of young and talented WRs in addition to veteran transfer Chase Cota from UCLA. Quietly the Ducks and WR coach Junior Adams added another pass catcher, Caleb Chapman, who's last stop was Texas A&M. Max gives insight as to what sorts of states the Ducks need to have success in going forward with another major challenger on the trail for California recruits. He thinks Oregon should start in emerging recruiting states that are close to home like Washington and Arizona--but thinks this staff could have a recruiting reach all over the country.

Oregon's early 2023 recruiting signs are strong at this point in Dan Lanning's first full cycle with the new staff. For the first time this century, Oregon Football has a head coach who comes from the defensive side of the ball. Typically, a team tends to be stronger on the side of the ball from which their head coach has a background as an assistant. This trend is very real and has to do with the overarching philosophy of how the head coach believes in winning football games--it is very reminiscent, for some of high school/middle school math class and how to solve equations.

On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin responds to a mailbag question about forming an identity in college football. With Dan Lanning as the head coach, it's reasonable to expect that the best part of the Oregon Football program while he's the HC will be the defense. It may take time before that fully develops--it's important to remember this is Lanning's first ever job as a head football coach.

Spencer has long anticipated that 4-year starter and All-Pac 12 performer Will Richardson would not return for a fifth season in Eugene. After testing the NBA waters, Richardson announced that he IS returning to Oregon for another year under Dana Altman. He has had a great career with the Ducks, and now poses the question...with transfers Keeshawn Barthelemy and Jermaine Couisnard coming over from power-5 programs, what will the starting lineup look like next year? The answer may lie in how ready 5-star center Kel'el Ware is to play right away, and how Dana Altman wants to approach the lineup.
