Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians

1. The Detroit Tigers traded their All-Star closer Gregory Soto to the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend. We discuss the impact of that trade for the Cleveland Guardians and what the deal does for the Tigers.

2. Terry Francona had a quote about Bo Naylor and what the catching landscape is for the Guardians going into spring training, and discuss if Bo Naylor will be on the opening day roster and if Cleveland is still looking at short term catching options.

3. USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that the Miami Marlins are open to moving starting pitching in trade talks. We discuss if Cleveland could find a fit for a trade for Jesus Luzardo.

4. We continue our dive into the Guardians prospects by position, at third base on this episode. It is Gabriel Rodriguez and not a whole lot else at the moment. Dayan Frias is an interesting sleeper.

5. On YouTube only, we talk about Baseball Prospectus' Cleveland Guardians prospect rankings that came out the day we recorded this episode.

1. Rafael Devers signed a big extension with the Boston Red Sox. We compare his contract to the Jose Ramirez deal and why Cleveland Guardians fans should be extra thankful for him in the wake of that signing.

2. The Cleveland Guardians signed four players to minor league deals on Wednesday, Jan 4. Former top prospect RHP Touki Toussaint the headliner of that group. We talk about what we like about that signing, the addition of C Cam Gallagher, RHP Michael Kelly and OF Roman Quinn, who all got non-roster invites to spring training.

3. In a YouTube only segment, we discuss the Boston Red Sox need for a shortstop to play next to Devers and try to think of potential trade ideas to send a shortstop to Boston and who Cleveland could target in return.

1. There were trade ideas in The Athletic for Pirates OF Bryan Reynolds, and included the Cleveland Guardians giving up two prospects that made their big league debut in 2022. We debate that trade and if it would work.

2. We quickly talk about former Cleveland prospect T.J. McFarland signing with the Mets, a former Rule 5 draft pick by the Orioles, and his journey as well as other players from his draft spot and class.

3. And finally, we dive into first base prospects in the Cleveland Guardians system, and everyone's favorite masher, Jhonkensy Noel, among other sleepers.

4. In the YouTube only segment of the show we talk about DEEP first base sleepers in the system like Micah Pries, Will Bartlett, and Joe Naranjo.

1. The holidays are over and we're back. Our first show of 2023, we quickly address our view on social media literacy and why we take the stance of vetting rumors. We also very briefly discuss Trevor Bauer because some of you asked about it.

2. The Cleveland Guardians yet again had another coach hired away in Kyle Hudson, who became the Red Sox first base coach. We look into his quick rise as a coach and his impact on the Cleveland Guardians last season. We also had one fan on Twitter bring up AJ Pollock and why he could be a good fit for the Cleveland Guardians, so we dig into how Pollock could be a good fit and how they would have to make it work.

3. We begin to start looking at the top prospects in the Cleveland Guardians system and we start with the weakest position, catcher. We give our top prospects at catcher in the system and why the Guardians need Bo Naylor to be the future at the position as soon as 2024.

4. On YouTube only, we go a little deeper into the catching position in the organization, discussing their past picks and misses and why they've shifted to signing more international catchers, instead of using draft picks on them. We go about as deep as anyone can on catching prospects in the system, all the way down to Venezuela.

(For those who stuck around on YouTube, here is the link to the roster sheet you can follow with a complete list of players in the Cleveland Guardians system - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vSmUnt-tH_ikoUCTEhiwweurJKLcszMSCDiKyBnx_GRVoHcPONzQfVDYMSLoRJ18-IlxbAsiFa09P9q/pubhtml#…)

1. We're back after the holidays and talking once again, about media literacy and why Cleveland Guardians rumors are few and far between and why you should be careful to trust anything you see without it coming from the usual sources.

2. Corey Kluber signed with the Boston Red Sox. We discussed Kluber's deal with the Red Sox and what it could mean for the Guardians potential to trade either Zach Plesac or Aaron Civale. As we get deeper into the discussion, we talk about whether or not they should or if it's worth trading either of them.

3. There was a very vague Bryan Reynolds mention before the holidays and some very loose rumor about the Yankees. We talk more about why it doesn't seem like Cleveland would be involved nor should they.

4. On YouTube only (33:55) we discuss the Blue Jays trading for Daulton Varsho from the Arizona Diamondbacks for Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel, and why Cleveland also wouldn't be involved in that, given how the deal turned out.

1. Dan Szymborski, creator of the ZiPs projection system and Fangraphs writer joins us to talk about the systems projections for the Cleveland Guardians in 2023. We ask Dan about the projections for George Valera that includes a near-age comp to Aaron Judge, but that probably doesn't mean what you think it means. But first, we get a little nerdy with Dan's outside baseball opinions and his trip to Cleveland for the 2019 All-Star game.

2. We focus on asking Dan about certain players ZiPs likes or doesn't like, including Steven Kwan, Oscar Gonzalez, Emmanuel Clase, Cade Smith and some other interesting players in the minors.

3. Dan shares more about what goes into ZiPs, how it projects the AL Central to play out at the moment, in 2023, and other thoughts on the division itself.

Today's episode is a crossover discussion with Sully of Locked On MLB talking about the Cleveland Guardians offseason. We get into the next wave of young players coming for Cleveland, why Sully likes the Guardians to repeat as AL Central champs in 2023, and he wants to know why the Guardians won't extend Shane Bieber. The discussion continues with wondering what, if any, moves Cleveland should make to add to the team and if they would pursue a Red Sox star at the trading deadline.

Stay tuned for Thursday's show why Dan Syzmborski of Fangraphs to talk about the Cleveland Guardians ZiPs projections!

1. Some former Cleveland players got signed over the weekend. We talked about the Los Angeles Dodgers signing Bradley Zimmer to a minor league deal, the Pittsburgh Pirates signing Austin Hedges, and the Houston Astros signing Michael Brantley.

2. Finally, we are reviewing the Cleveland Guardians 2022 bullpen in our off-season position reviews. This was a huge strength for the Guardians in 2022, so we talked about Emmanuel Clase's All-Star season and the other breakouts in the 'pen including Trevor Stephan and Sam Hentges. We grade the relievers seasons and look ahead.

3. On YouTube only (34:20) we nerd out and start talking about minor league relief prospects in the Cleveland Guardians system. We talked about Tim Herrin and other relievers that did and didn't get taken in the Rule 5 draft. We get very deep into the system with interesting relief numbers.

4. We wrap up the YouTube only segment with starting pitchers in the Cleveland Guardians minor league system that could be interesting in the bullpen and if they will get moved into it.
