Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians

The 2023 Gold Glove finalists were released on Wednesday with Andres Gimenez, Steven Kwan, and Jose Ramirez making the cut at their respective positions. We look at their candidacy for the awards, how these awards are decided, and other observations about the field. We also have two indirect rumors about potential Guardians managerial candidates, Mark Budzinski and Troy Snitker, and we look at their resumes and debate their candidacies.

We got plenty of questions about who Sal Frelick is and more inquiries about the trade possibilities we discussed with the Brewers on yesterday's show and we re-visit those more in-depth.

Jeff asked for and received interesting data on Guardians 2023 draft pick Christian Knapzceck. We discuss that data on Knazpzeck but also get into the data and process as a whole and why it matters.

And Jim Bowden pitched hypothetical trades for Juan Soto this offseason, including the Guardians. We dig into what that looks like and if it's even realistic.

On today's show, we look more at the reasons why the Guardians may be interviewing Chris Valaika for the managerial opening and further rehash the Sean Muprhy trade rumors.

Brewers SP Brandon Woodruff is set to have offseason shoulder surgery and possibly miss all of 2024. Would Milwaukee have interest in any Guardians starting pitching to will fill the void and could that help Cleveland upgrade their outfield?

And we discuss recent reports from the Arizona Fal League on Kyle Manzardo and Chase DeLauter.

Over the weekend it was reported that the Guardians will or have interviewed hitting coach Chris Valaika for the open managerial position. Is this a good idea for Cleveland, given their meager offense in 2022? Would he have more influence over the organization's hitters and philosophy as a manager? Would the results change?

Also, Zach Plesac filed for free agency and we talk about why he was never able to build upon his 2020 season.

We also look into why the Red Sox are having a hard time finding GM candidates right now and why that is.

And we've seen some reported trade demands for Sean Murphy last year and wonder how Oakland ended up with the deal they landed on.

Some 100-win teams are going home from the playoffs quickly again in the 2023 playoffs. We talk about the playoff format and why random variance weighs so heavily in the postseason, and why you just want the Guardians to get in. We also do discuss if the Guardians are built for October baseball, compared to teams like the Phillies or the Diamondbacks, and why Cleveland trying to be competitive every year without going all in plays into this.

We look at the Twins heading into the offseason and what kind of roster they will build to hold the Guardians off again in 2024. And John McDonald was mentioned as a managerial interview candidate for Cleveland and what that might mean for him and the Guardians.

The Texas Rangers are moving on to the ALCS, so the Guardians couldn't even interview Will Venable yet, but reports suggest he may be staying in Texas anyway. That would mean both Venable and Kevin Cash won't be available candidates for the Guardians to interview for their open manager spot. When Cleveland has spent money on free agents, it hasn't always worked out well. So could the Guardians look at keeping Reynaldo Lopez, and should they?

MLB Trade Rumors released their arbitration projections out and we discuss some of those numbers on Shane Bieber, Ramon Laureano, and Josh Naylor and how that will affect their spot on the roster in 2024. We also discuss the rumor that Will Venable may be a "favored" candidate to some to land the Guardians open managerial position. And we start off dismissing a bizarre and unrealistic Jose Ramirez rumor from last weekendl

Part II of our discussion with Zack Meisel of The Athletic/Selby is Godcast looking at the Guardians search for the next manager, why they need to get this hire absolutely right, and why they might look for an external candidate who also may have ties to the organization.

The Terry Francona era in Cleveland left us with so much to talk about, reflect on, and use to look to the future. Zack Meisel of The Athletic and Selby is Godcast joined the show to talk about what stood out from the Terry Francona era, how his overall tenure will be looked back on, why he was able to write his own ending, and what some of the takeaways from this era are that will be used to inform the search for the next Guardians manager.

The Milwaukee Brewers were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round in two games. That makes Craig Counsell unofficially a free agent manager. Could Counsell be a candidate for the Guardians' managerial opening, or is it too much of a foregone conclusion he ends up with the Mets? We look at Counsell's track record to see how good of a candidate he would even be with how things ended in Milwaukee. We also touch on the question of why a Josh Naylor extension was not on either of our Guardians offseason priorities list. And we look at some potentially promising and interesting data from Kyle Manzardo's time in Columbus this year.
