Locked On Guardians - Daily Podcast On The Cleveland Guardians

The San Diego Padres needed a 50 million dollar loan to make payroll. We get into the how and why this occurred, spoiler the ever-changing TV deal is a big part of it. We get into why the Padres could explain a quiet free agency for Cleveland what the Padres might need to do and why Cleveland might be an ideal third team in a bigger trade for the Friars. Then we dig into free agency and bring up a particular target with some warts but makes the most sense for the Guardians if the price is right. Then we dive into the RUMOR Mill, to talk about a potential deal with the Cubs that won't go away. This leads to a bullpen discussion in general as we explain who might go, who might stay, who to watch for, and who could be on the block.

Craig Counsell officially had his interview with the Guardians Monday, so we discuss where things sit in the saga between the Guardians, Mets and Brewers, and where Counsell might end up. We also discuss what the Guardians might be asking Counsell in their interviews, or if he's really the one doing the interviewing here. We get into why power is a lot harder of a skill to acquire and develop, which causes some confusion in looking at the Guardians approach. And we look around the league at potential coaching hires that could come along with a new manager.

As the Guardians continue their managerial search, a report on Wednesday suggested that Cleveland is interested in Craig Counsell and requested to interview him. What interest level would Counsell have in Cleveland's opening and should he be their top target if so? The Guardians also interviewed Cubs bench coach and former Padres manager Andy Green, which we discuss briefly. And we touch on the overblown notion that Cleveland isn't good at making trades. Will Tom Hamilton win the 2023 Ford C. Frick Award? We quickly talk about his career in Cleveland his award chances.

Adolis Garcia just had the series of his life in the ALCS and had a breakout 2023 season. But he had a long journey to get here and was let go by multiple teams along the way, including the Rangers at one point. We talk about how people lament the Guardians decisions like this, and how almost every team has a player that had a similar journey as Garcia and has decisions they wish they could reverse.

We also discuss the Rangers' burgeoning OF depth and if Cleveland could find a fit in a trade with them over the offseason as well.

And we have more thoughts on Stephen Vogt's candidacy.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on Monday that former big league catcher Stephen Vogt has emerged as a serious candidate for the Guardians managerial opening. We look at Vogt's very short coaching resume and what might make him a serious candidate and what the implications of hiring Vogt could be. We also discuss Jose Ramirez's reported decision to play in the Dominican Winter League this offseason and we do a quick check-in on the Guardians playing in the AFL and offseason leagues.

We know that current Dodgers 1B coach Clayton McCullough has interviewed for the Guardians managerial opening and reportedly were very impressed with him. Does that make McCullough a serious candidate? And what would make him a serious candidate? We also discuss the late Hank Peters' nomination for the Hall of Fame and why he's a good candidate and has never gotten his due in Cleveland. Could Cleveland also be connected to the Dodgers this winter in their search for pitching help? We discuss some possible fits between the two clubs.

Jose Ramirez is the Guardians most important player and he likes to play everyday. How long will that work for Clevleland? Teams like the Astros, Phillies, Braves and Dodgers all got the postseason with stars and power. If Cleveland can't get big stars like Juan Soto or hit for a ton of power, they need to build depth. Today's episode discusses the potential need for load management for Jose Ramirez and the case to build more depth. We also look at Andrew Walters as a name who might force his way into the 2024 bullpen already. And we also highlight the importance of the ballpark renovations for Progressive Field and the "ballpark village" concept replacing revenue streams that used to come from big TV money.
