The Jets made the opposite of a big splash yesterday, bringing back Brent Qvale and Eric Tomlinson. These guys will likely be competing for roster spots in training camp. In an ideal scenario, neither would make the final 53 man roster. It's tough for me to see the logic in bringing either guy back. Qvale is amazingly now one of the longest tenured players on the team. On today's podcast we will talk about some of the flaws I see in retaining these players.
We will also discuss positions where the Jets still have some work to do. Yesterday's show was centered on the positions the Jets have done the best job upgrading during the offseason. Today we look at the places where the team has not upgraded enough. There is still time to address these positions through what remains of free agency and the Draft, but the team might have some problems if these spots are not addressed.

The free agency period isn’t over. It will continue in the days, weeks, and months ahead as players sign. Monday was proof of that as the Jets added a depth piece. Tom Compton comes from Minnesota. The veteran journeyman will likely provide depth at the guard position.
But the main portion of free agency is now over. News has slowed quite a bit as most of the big names have found a home.
On today’s podcast we look back at free agency to examine the areas where the Jets have most improved their roster. There are three areas in particular that stand out to me, and they will be the focal points of today’s discussion.

Free agency has slowed down quite a bit. It's tough for me to believe things were just getting underway last Monday. It doesn't feel like a week to me. It feels like that was months ago. The Jets have made numerous additions over the last week in building their 2019 roster.
In one of the last moves to take place before things grind to a halt, the Jets brought back their old kicker on Friday. Chandler Catanzaro will return to the team after a year ago. He parlayed a nice 2017 season with the Jets into a big contract with Tampa Bay. That didn't work out as he was cut in November and caught on with the Panthers briefly. Now the Jets got him back and had to cope with a Pro Bowl season from Jason Myers as they waited for Catanzaro to return. On today's podcast we talk about Catanzaro and other assorted free agency thoughts.

Although things aren't as exciting as they were a few days ago, the Jets remain active in free agency. We are starting the second wave, and it probably is as important as the first wave. The team still has a lot of hole to fill. The players signed from this point forward generally won't be big names or make big money. A team that knows what it's doing can fill holes on the cheap this time of year.
The Jets made some moves on Thursday within this phase of free agency. The team retained nose tackle Steve McLendon. If you have followed my work, you probably know my thoughts on McLendon and how keeping him around pleases me. The team also signed slot corner Brian Poole from Atlanta and cut Isaiah Crowell after just one season. In other news, a couple of former Jets ended up in New England. We will discuss all of this on today's podcast.

Yesterday was the NFL's version of New Year's Day. The league year began at 4:00 p.m. New York time. The official start of the league year has become largely meaningless. Perhaps there still is significance since players cannot officially sign contracts with new teams until it comes (Anthony Barr), but the days of coaches and general managers sitting in a car outside a free agent's house waiting for midnight are over. Players can now negotiate during the legal tampering period, and most of the big names come off the board during that time period.
After the Le'Veon Bell excitement, Wednesday was a slow day for the Jets. They actually lost two of their three Pro Bowlers from a year ago, but the impact is far less than it sounds. The two players they lost were special teamers, Jason Myers and Andre Roberts. The team did retain backup linebacker and special teamer Neville Hewitt. On today's podcast we discuss these relatively minor developments.

The second day of the legal tampering period was eventful for the Jets.
After midnight, Adam Schefter broke the story that running back Le'Veon Bell decided to sign with the Jets. Landing the star running back perhaps allowed the Jets to breathe a sigh of relief because it had been a brutal day for the team before that point.
Yes, the Jets did re-sign Henry Anderson, but the rest of Tuesday had not been pretty. Anthony Barr backed out of his deal with the Jets. The linebacker will return to Minnesota instead. The Jets lost out at the center position as Matt Paradis signed in Carolina. When it comes to the premium centers available, the team will leave free agency empty-handed. The Jets also agreed to terms with C.J. Mosley on a monster contract, but that might be a questionable allocation of resources.
We will talk about the highs and lows of Tuesday on today's podcast.

The official start of free agency is not until tomorrow. Considering that is the case, Monday was a pretty busy day for the Jets as they started the "legal tampering" period by agreeing to terms with four players.
On today's podcast we look at the moves the team made. The final structures of the contracts are still outstanding, but we can still explore what the team added.
The biggest addition is linebacker Anthony Barr from Minnesota. The four-time Pro Bowler reportedly agreed to terms with the Jets on Monday evening. His addition is interesting. What role will Barr play with the defense? At this point we don't know. There are multiple possibilities.
Additionally, the Jets added a slot receiver in Jamison Crowder. We will talk about what it means for Sam Darnold and the rest of the receiving corps.
The Jets also added bottom of the roster fodder by re-signing Darryl Roberts and bringing in Josh Bellamy. Why? It's tough to say.

The new league year is set to begin this week. The period of "legal tampering" begins today when teams and players are allowed to start discussing contracts. With the cap space the Jets will have, you can expect plenty of activity.
But in many ways the new year began for the Jets over the weekend when news broke that the Jets acquired former Pro Bowl guard Kelechi Osemele. The Jets sent a fifth round pick to the Raiders and received a sixth round pick back to facilitate the deal. The team has a clear need to upgrade its offensive line, and this was the first step. Breaking down the trade is the main topic on today's podcast episode.
In other news of less importance, the Jets re-signed backup center Jonnothan Harrison over the weekend and had a free agent visit with cornerback Kevin Johnson. We will also discuss these topics.

This week's call for mailbag questions was a huge success. We got too many questions to fit in one show. In fact, we got so many questions that we could actually put together a second mailbag of the week. This works out since next week figures to be so busy that there might not be a podcast mailbag. As always, thank you for submitting great questions. The mailbag show wouldn't work without mailbag questions.
On today's show we look at the most important traits for a Draft prospect, whether the Combine moved the needle in a big way positively or negatively for anybody, Jets strategy for filling positions in free agency or the Draft, what the plan is at edge rusher, and whether Landon Collins' situation with the Giants is a sign of trouble ahead for the Jets when time comes for them to lock up some of their key players.
