We continue to move closer to the 2019 NFL Draft. It is scheduled to begin in just over three weeks. The Jets currently own the third overall pick.
On today's podcast I empty my notebook. There is no large, overarching theme. I merely share some scattered thoughts I have about the Jets and professional football at large. The team re-signed Frankie Luvu yesterday. The Alliance of American Football suspended operations near the end of its first season, likely ending things for the league for good. I offer a few thoughts on these developments.
I also share my views on why one specific player will likely make or break this year's free agent class for the Jets and a couple of signings I like better now than I did the day they were made. Finally I tell you why I don't like the idea of packaging the team's pair of third round picks to move into the second round and why I don't hate Arizona's outside the box thinking at quarterback.

We continue to move closer to the start of the 2019 NFL Draft. We are now just over three weeks away from the event kicking off. The Jets currently own the third overall pick, although a trade down to acquire more selections is not out of the question.
On today's podcast I continue my series of general thoughts about Draft prospects and the positions they play. Today my main focus is on conversion prospects. Every year I hear people criticize the idea of changing the position of a prospect. Are these criticisms fair?
My answer is...it depends. Sometimes asking a prospect to change positions is a major reach. Other times it really isn't asking a prospect to do things very differently from how he played in college. And sometimes position labels are simply misnomers because of the differences in defensive systems.

Today is the start of a new week and a new month. It is a big month at that. April is the month of the NFL Draft. We are a few weeks away from the Jets attempting to stock their roster with young talent. The team currently owns the third overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. The Jets lack a second round pick after their trade last year with the Colts to move up for Sam Darnold, but they own an extra third round pick due to last year's Teddy Bridgewater trade.
On today's podcast we discuss the NFL Draft. Namely we talk about the role a given player's position should play into a team's decision-making. I think people frequently only advocate for their team picking players at weak spots, but I argue that more should go into it than that. I talk about three other aspects that I believe should matter, breaking a tie between two prospects, looking at the strength of a class, and building matchup problems for opponents.

The NFL Draft is now less than a month away. With the big part of free agency all but done, most fans have turned their attention to the Draft. The Jets own the third overall pick and plenty of big holes to fill on their roster.
Over the next few weeks, one debate is bound to dominate the fanbase. Should the Jets keep the third pick and grab one of the top three players in this year's class, or should they look to trade down so they can add additional picks? On today's podcast I offer a few thoughts on this dilemma. There are valid arguments for both sides. The answer also isn't necessarily easy to decipher since the outcome could vary on either side. I also offer some thoughts on the show about filling needs through the Draft.

Baseball is starting, we are in the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament, and the calendar is about to turn to April. Those things mean that spring is just around the corner. They also mean the NFL Draft is just around the corner as well.
On today's podcast we have a Thursday mailbag. Thanks to everybody who submitted mailbag questions. We couldn't do the show without you. If your question went unanswered, feel free to resend it next week.
Today's mailbag features questions on whether the Jets would be better served trading down or keeping the third pick, whether a potential Chris Herndon suspension is a major concern, whether Avery Williamson could be traded instead of Darron Lee, what the Jets can expect from Lee, the odds of Mike Maccagnan losing his job over his handling of the center position, and whether center or edge should be the priority in a trade back scenario.

Free agency has come to a halt. For the first time in a while, we do not have a signing to talk about on a podcast episode. Over the last couple of weeks, we at least had a minor signing to talk about each day, even if it was as inconsequential as Neal Sterling or Brandon Copeland. This is a sure sign we are entering Draft season.
As we turn to the Draft, teams are taking stock of what they have. Right or wrong, needs play a role in Draft strategy. For some teams it's a bigger role than others. On yesterday's podcast we talked about how the Jets look at each position on offense. Today we take a look at the defense. Are the Jets set at a position? Can they get by? Is the position not looking so good? How is the depth? These are the questions we will look to answer on today's show.

The focus of the league is now on the owners meetings taking place this week as potential changes are discussed and receive votes. The focus of the Jets is was on a couple of minor signings Monday. The team brought back Brandon Copeland and Neal Sterling. But the long-term focus is currently on gearing up for the NFL Draft, which is just around the corner in a few weeks.
Part of preparing for the Draft is taking an inventory of what your team has and what your team needs. On today's podcast we do just that. We take stock of the offense leading up to the 2019 NFL Draft. At what spots should the Jets feel good? At which spots should they feel like they can get by? And at what spots should the team feel concerned? We discuss both starters and backups on the show.

The league's owners meetings will take place over the next few days. We will hear about various proposed rule changes in the league. Some might be adopted. Most will not. They will deal with topics such as changing the format for overtime and expanding the use of instant replay.
This got me thinking. What changes would I make to the NFL if I had the chance? On today's podcast I offer a few ideas about how to make the league better. Some are in the rulebook. Others are in the way the league structures itself.
I will say this. If you are a fan of the extra point, you might want to skip this show. I don't have very good things to say about the point after touchdown.

The first wave of free agency ended days ago. Teams started looking for value deals. The signing of Justin Houston with the Colts arguably brings an end to the second phase of free agency. Houston was one of the few remaining above average starters who evoked confidence. What remains is largely the bargain bin.
On today's podcast we examine that bargain bin. What players remain who could help the Jets in 2019? To be honest, the pickings are slim. I can't say there are any remaining free agents in whom I have full confidence. The remaining guys almost all have large question marks. All I can do is offer some players who could conceivably offer some value if things break right.

Happy Thursday to all!
The Jets have a new backup quarterback in Trevor Siemian. The former Broncos starter and Vikings backup agreed to terms yesterday on a very inexpensive one year deal. Reports suggest the Jets will only have to pay him $2 million. That is a big discount for a team that was paying a journeyman backup $10 million a year ago.
We will discuss this signing on today's podcast. We also have a mailbag show in store today where we discuss how likely it is the Jets can find help at both center and cornerback with their pair of third round picks, whether Nick Bosa or Josh Allen would be a better pick at 3, a center to look at in the Draft, the lowest the Jets should go if they trade down, the ethics of trying to convince the Giants to make a trade, whether I will chip in for a "Fire Maccagnan" banner, Doritos, and tacos.
