Locked On Jets - Daily Podcast On The New York Jets

Week 9 of the NFL season was the rare football Sunday without the Jets. It was the best kind of weekend. The Jets notched a win early so everybody got to enjoy a stress-free weekend of football watching. Hopefully you enjoyed Week 9.

Without a game to break down on this Monday, we turn our attention on the podcast elsewhere. On today's show we provide some scattered thoughts on the Jets and the NFL. The Jets quietly entered what could be an important period of their season. Few are talking about it, but this stretch is a bit of a gift from the schedule makers. Speaking of schedule makers, it is important to avoid absolute statements about games weeks ahead of time. The difficulty of those games can change rapidly. In these upcoming games, the  performance of certain players will be worth watching both for how it will impact the team on the field and how it may impact the Jets' contract offers. We discuss one such player. Finally, we have to talk about the Giants.

The Jets entered last night's game against the Buffalo Bills on a three game losing streak. It felt like things might be starting to slip away. A fourth straight loss would drop them to 3-6 on the season, and the bottom could fall out from there.

That did not happen. What we saw instead was a dominant performance by the Jets. New York won 34-21 to improve to 4-5 on the season. The score did not indicate the degree by which the Jets dominated the game as the Bills tacked on some late meaningless touchdowns.

On today's podcast we talk about what went right. The Jets had the perfect gameplan on defense, and they executed it very well. Almost the entire front seven deserves some credit. A former star on this team is starting to look like a star again, and a first round pick is showing signs of life. On offense the backs did their job, and a deep threat got deep.

It would have been difficult to draw up a better script for this team to snap its losing streak.

Tuesday was a busy day for the Jets.

The NFL trade deadline came and went. It seemed likely to be a quiet day for the Jets. It wasn't. The team made a deal right before the deadline, and surprisingly the team was in buyer mode. New York acquired cornerback Rashard Robinson from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a fifth round pick in the 2018 Draft.

Earlier in the day, news broke that the Jets are losing wide receiver Jeremy Kerley for four games. Kerley is facing a suspension for an alleged PED violation.

We talk about these events on today's podcast as Michael from Gang Green Nation joins the show once again.

The NFL season moves very quickly. By the time you reach the midway point of a season, it can feel like almost no time has passed since Week 1.

The Jets are at the midway point of the 2017 season. They have completed eight games from their sixteen game schedule. On today's podcast, let's look back at the first half. I have some reflections and awards to give out for the Jets. I also look forward a bit on what might be coming in the second half of the season.

Additionally, today is the NFL trade deadline. Some big deals were made on Monday.. The biggest one might have involved a division rival as the Patriots sent quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to San Francisco for a second round pick. I have a few thoughts on the deal along with the approach the Jets should take at the deadline in general.

Sunday was a rainy day at the Meadowlands. By the end of their Week 8 loss to the Falcons, Jets fans felt about as gloomy as the weather. Atlanta's 25-20 victory has put the Jets on a three game losing streak. The team is now 3-5. Three weeks ago, the Jets were giving signals they were going to beat expectations in 2017. Now it feels like an early three game winning streak might have been a temporary diversion from the bottom of the league standings.

On today's podcast we offer some thoughts on the game. The weather played a role. There were some key plays that went against the Jets aided by Mother Nature, but the Falcons also had their share of problems with the weather. There were some disappointing performances and some silver linings on a rainy day.

Ultimately the difference between the teams might have been quality at the most important position on the field.

Usually on our podcast, we do mailbag shows on Thursday. This week our schedule is a little different so we will do the mailbag show on Wednesday. Thanks again to those who submitted questions. Apologies to those who submitted questions that didn't get answered. Feel free to submit them against next week.

On today's show we look at whether Bryce Petty should be starting at quarterback, the biggest position of need on the offensive line, the odds of Buster Skrine being benched, whether Muhammad Wilkerson increased his trade value with a strong performance against the Dolphins, and whether McCown is wearing down within games.

For three quarters and change in Miami, the Jets put together a very impressive performance. The team was responding the perfect way to a difficult loss last week. Losing a game because of a bad call isn't easy, but the Jets were doing it.

After a nightmare fourth quarter, the Jets found themselves leaving Miami 3-4. The Dolphins won 31-28 despite trailing 28-14 after three. On today's podcast we talk about what went wrong.

There were not many players who had an outright poor game. One cornerback was repeated beaten, and a veteran quarterback made an unfathomable decision in a key spot. These helped pull defeat out of the jaws of victory.

On today's podcast, we recap the loss.
