San Diego Padres held on to beat the Marlins 9-8 in an absolutely wild game at Loan Depot Park.
----- 'LIVE' Instant Reaction from Jim "Gries" Grieshaber -----
Former Marlin Luis Arraez had two hits and three RBI's- including the go-ahead run in the 10th inning- and Tanner Scott (also a former Marlin) picked up the save.
Arraez is 4 for 11 in the first two games of the series against his former club. He won the NL batting title with Miami last season before being traded to San Diego on May 4.
Scott worked the tenth for his 19th save. But the Marlins made it anything but easy for their former teammate, putting runners on first and third base with nobody out.
Miami’s Derek Hill reached on a leadoff bunt single, moving Vidal Bruján over to third. Cristian Pache popped out on a bunt attempt, Xavier Edwards hit a grounder to third baseman Manny Machado, who threw Bruján out at home, and Scott struck out Jake Burger to end the game.
Jackson Merrill’s two-run homer in the eighth tied it at seven for San Diego, then Miami tied it in the bottom half on Burger’s solo blast, his 21st homer and 11th since the All-Star break.
The Marlins scored six runs in the fifth inning, with Jesus Sanchez and Otto Lopez hitting two-run doubles to key the rally. Derek Hill hit a sacrifice fly and Jhonny Pereda added a run-scoring single.
Marlins starter Roddery Muñoz gave up three runs on six hits and struck out three in five innings, before the Padres lit up the Miami bullpen for the second straight day.
Matt Waldron allowed five runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings for the Padres, striking out five and walking two.
The Marlins (43-75) have lost five of six and three straight in extra innings. The Padres (66-52) have won seven straight and 16 of their last 18 games.
San Diego clinched its eighth consecutive series and has won 17 of 21 on the road.
The Marlins and Padres wrap up their three-game series tomorrow at Loan Depot Park. First pitch is at 1:40pm ET, with Miami's Max Meyer (2-2, 5.10) facing San Diego's Dylan Cease. (11-8, 3.40)
We will be here 'LIVE' right after the game with your Locked On Marlins POSTCAST, hosted by Jim "GRIES" Grieshaber.
