Kyle Stowers crushed a three-run homer off Giants ace Logan Webb, Nick Fortes had three hits and two runs scored, as the Miami Marlins beat the San Francisco Giants 7-5 on Sunday to secure their first series win in more than a month.
The Fish won for the third time in four games. San Francisco lost for the fourth time in five games, hurting its fading playoff chances in the race for the third NL wild card.
Giants ace Logan Webb (11-9) gave up six runs and eight hits in six innings before the Marlins lit him up in the fifth. He struck out four and walked none. Webb had been brilliant- shutting out the Marlins before he got in trouble with two outs in the fifth.
Fortes hit an RBI single just before Stowers drove a 439-foot drive to right-center that extended his hitting streak to seven games and propelled the Marlins to a 4-2 lead.
Webb had a 1.70 ERA over his last six outings coming into the day.
Stowers, who played college ball at Stanford, had family in the house today, on a day when he hit leadoff for the first time.
Jonah Bride doubled home Jesús Sánchez, and Otto Lopez's knocked one in on a groundout gave the Marlins a 6-5 lead.
Xzavion Curry (1-2), who made his MLB debut yesterday, pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for his first career win.
Calvin Faucher handled the ninth for his sixth save of the season. Faucher has not allowed a home run in 52 2/3 innings pitched this season.
San Francisco's Mike "Yaz" Yastrzemski, the grandson of Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski, hit a leadoff drive in the first for his 100th career homer. The Yastrzemskis are the fourth grandson-grandfather duo to both have at least 100 home runs in their MLB careers.
Marlins starter Darren McCaughan, making his first start of the season and his second career start, gave up three earned runs in four innings of work.
