The Pittsburgh Pirates finished off a perfect season against the Miami Marlins today in Pittsburgh, beating Miami 3-1 to finish off the three-game sweep and finish the season 7-0 against the Marlins.
The Marlins broke through in the ninth inning- chasing Pittsburgh Closer David Bender after Christian Pache's RBI single scored Lopez with two on and two outs with the score 3-1 Pirates. Lopez had doubled earlier. Jalen Beeks came in to face Kyle Stowers- the potential go-ahead run. Stowers reached on an infield single to load the bases. Beeks then got Xavier Edwards to fly out to end the game.
Pache hâd two hits and Miami's only RBI.
Pittsburgh Starting Pitcher Bailey Falter had a no-hitter through 6 1/3 innings- his career-best start. The lefty ended up allowing no runs on two hits in 7 1/3. He struck out five and walked three. Falter was taken out off the game in the seventh after Kyle Stowers flew to center field following Christian Pache's leadoff single.
Colin Holderman came on in relief for Pittsburgh, making his 2nd appearance of the series. Holderman got pinch-hitter Xavier Edwards on a fielder's choice, then hit Griffin Conine with a pitch. Conor Norby- back in the lineup after fouling a Paul Skenes pitch off his foot in the opener- grounded to 3rd base to end the inning.
The Marlins gave the Bucs (and Falter) a gift in the 6th inning, when Otto Lopez led off with a walk. After Jake Burger flew to center, Jonah Bride broke up Falter's no-hitter with a single to left. Lopez inexplicably tried to go to third base on the hit, getting throw out easily by Pittsburgh Left Fielder Billy Cook.
Falter's outing came at the right time for the Bucs, who used seven relief pitchers in yesterday's game.
The Pirates jumped in front early, scoring two runs in the first inning off Miami Starter Jonathan Bermudez, scoring on ONeil Cruz's bases-loaded walk and Conor Joe's sacrifice fly. Jared Triolo's added a solo home run in the second inning to make it 3-0. Triolo had two hits to lead the way for Pittsburgh, while Nick Gonzales also had two hits.
Bermudez made his first start for Miami, giving up three runs on three hits in two innings. He had made two appearances out of the bullpen prior to today.
