Bryson Stott went 2-4 with a home run and two RBI's, Ranger Suarez cruised through five scoreless innings, and the 1st-place Phillies picked up an easy win over the last-place Miami Marlins, 5-1 Thursday night at Loan Depot Park.
Stott singled in Trea Turner in the top of the first inning, giving Suarez and the Philadelphia bullpen all they would need to pick up the win.
The Phillies added four runs in the sixth inning to chase Adam Oller, who had pitched well through the first five innings. Stott's solo homer got it going, and Kody Clemens added a two-run double before scoring on a wild pitch.
Oller would end the night having given up four runs on five hits while striking out six and walking five in 5 1/3 innings of work. Two of the runs scored after Oller left the game.
Suarez (12-6) gave up just three hits while striking out four for the Phillies, 83-56.
Griffin Conine led off the seventh with a pinch-hit double for the Marlins, 52-88. He came home to score on Jesus Sanchez's second pinch-hit single in two nights to get Miami on the board. Conine is the son of "Mr. Marlin" Jeff Conine, the first ever Marlin selected in the MLB Expansion Draft in 1993.
Jake Burger doubled and scored on Clemens' throwing error in the eighth. Clemens is the son of MLB Legend Roger Clemens, one of the greatest pitchers of all-time.
Marlins catcher Nick Fortes hurt his foot as he beat out an infield single with two outs in the seventh inning. He was lifted for a pinch runner.
The Marlins lost relief pitcher Emmanuele Ramirez today. Ramirez was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Phillies won tonight in spite of the fact that their top four hitters- Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, and Nick Castellanos- went a combined 1-15.
The NL-East leaders are 6-4 against the Marlins this season.
