Locked On Nets - Daily Podcast On The Brooklyn Nets

The Nets going into this season with a possible looming problem in the shooting department when looking at the whole roster. While Mikal Bridges will likely start at the nominal two-guard position for the team, it remains to be seen what kind of offensive punch they will get behind him.

With Joe Harris and Seth Curry out in the off-season, the Nets lost two of their best long-range shooters. And though the Locked on Nets guys like the moves Sean Marks made, none of them were major upgrades in the shooting department.

This could end up being an issue for the Nets this season and the three-point shooting in general could be well below league average.

With word that Buddy Hield and the Indiana Pacers will be parting waves and looking for a trade, the Locked on Nets guys get into it about whether this could be a good move for Brooklyn? The Nets will go into next season with a possible big hole when it comes to team shooting and Buddy Hield has proven to be one of the very best three-point shooters over the course of his career.

Could Sean Marks and company think about stop-gapping some of their possible spacing issues with a guy like Hield? Or is this a total non-starter because of Hield’s age and the team’s overall timeline?

Ben Simmons gave another interview this week, this time his first to local New York outlets, and there continues to be an air of positivity around his return to the court this season. Things are lining up, at least if Ben Simmons can be believed here, to be one of the better comeback stories in awhile.

Of course, Ben Simmons’ time in Brooklyn has been marred by injury and underwhelming play, but it appears as if his health is trending in the right direction now. He’s set to have a major impact on the Nets this season, and he represents the exact kind of player the team desperately needs right now.

The Locked on Nets guys take a look at Ben Simmons’ most recent quotes and what the expectations are coming into this season.

With training camps getting closer, it makes sense that the news around Damian Lillard is starting to ramp up again after a few quiet weeks. Could the Nets be back in the mix here? There are reports of a mystery team joining the fray in the possible Lillard trade rumor swirl. Who else out there could be making inquiries?

The Locked on Nets guys revisit the situation with Damian Lillard and the possible landing spots for the (current) Portland Trailblazer guard. Are the Nets still in this? Do Boston, Milwaukee, Philly or other teams have a chance here along with Miami?

The Locked on Nets guys take a look at the growth and improvement from Nic Claxton over the last couple of seasons and dive into what that could mean for him this year. He finished 9th in Defensive Player of the Year voting last year but was as high as 3rd in odds at one point.

How high could he climb this time around and what needs to happen to really put him in consideration? It will involve more than just his play but the Nets are set up well to be a good defensive team this season. He was among the league leaders in blocks last year and has the counting stats to back up a case. But will the Nets actually be good enough to push him into real consideration?

Cam Thomas enters a pivotal season for his career this year and there are some bigger expectations on the third-year guard. But is the 6th Man of the Year Award actually in play for him? The Locked on Nets guys take a look at his FanDuel odds for the award and determine if there is a path for him to actually be in the running. It’s an interesting thought experiment around Thomas who’s had incredible games in his time with Brooklyn, but also spent time buried on the bench.

Could he be a microwave scorer off the bench and is this Nets team set up much better for him going into the season?

It’s a Friday Mailbag and the Locked on Nets guys are covering a bunch of different topics. They take a look at the expectations around Dariqq Whitehead going into this season after he was spotted putting up shots at the Nets facility. They also discuss how to feel about Nets players who have moved on from the team. And then there’s talk about the Kevin Porter Jr. situation coming out of Houston. It’s a horrible set of circumstances but there’s a chance the Nets work their way into the Rockets trying to move off the contract.

All of this and more on a packed Friday podcast.

With Bleacher Report releasing its Top 100 players, the Locked on Nets guys discuss Mikal Bridges and Kyrie Irving being tied on the list. Is this accurate and does it truly represent the current value of the players? It’s an interesting discussion, one that has a number of different sides and considerations.

Plus they look at where Cam Johnson and Nic Claxton were ranked as well and whether each are on the upward trajectory for this coming season. In all, the Nets had three players in the Top 100 on a list that varies compared to some others in the industry.

The NBA recently announced that it would be instituting new rules around player rest, specifically where the stars of the league are concerned. There will now be fines in place for teams who rest star players too often. It’s an interesting subplot for the season with the NBA clearly fed up with certain aspects of load management among its best players.

The Locked on Nets guys discuss the situation and how it affects the Nets. They also look at the league as a whole and how they got to this point. And how this is the correct way to go.

Team USA lost a brutal game in the consolation match against Canada on Sunday to fall out of the medals at FIBA. Even with a Mikal Bridges miracle heave of a three at the end, the US team wasn’t able to pull it out in overtime. The Locked on Nets guys take a look back at the FIBA run in general and also the overall play of Mikal Bridges who was arguably the best player on the team during this run.

They also talk about expectations for the team going into this season and FIBA has shaped some of that.
