Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

The Expansion Draft is coming up quickly and there have been more updates as to who the Penguins could protect. Before that comes up though, Hunter gets into his thoughts on the Jack Adams Award and how it's a disgrace that Mike Sullivan wasn't nominated. What has the award actually become? Will Sullivan ever get the respect he deserves? After that, Hunter gets into the expansion draft talk and what he would do with that last spot between Blueger and Carter. Would Seattle even take Carter if he was available? Are the Pens gonna protect Mark Friedman as the third defenseman? Hunter also goes into the Final 4 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs before closing out today's episode.

Sidney Crosby wasn't nominated for the Hart Trophy today but as the title says, does it even matter? Hunter gives his answer for what his ballot would've been, even though Sid had no chance of winning the award, thanks to Connor McDavid's insane season. Before that though, Hunter recaps Evgeni Malkin's season and how it looked to be more of a huge outlier than a sign of things to come. He goes into the numbers, plus some of Geno's best moments of the season before providing a prediction for next season. Also touched on: What makes this Islanders run actually go? Do they have a shot against Tampa Bay? What was the injury that kept Casey DeSmith out?

The season reviews are here! Hunter starts you off right with a review of Sidney Crosby's season and how he continues to tear it up. He goes into the numbers from Natural Stat Trick and hockeyviz to show what he did this year, as well as the playoffs. What's the expectation for Sid next season? Will he be a point-per-game player again? Could he crack 40 goals? Hunter ponders on both, but not before he goes into the NHL Awards and his thoughts on the finalists so far. Did Victor Hedman really deserve to be a finalist for the Norris? Who should win the Selke? Is it Vasilevskiy for the Vezina over Flower? After that, Hunter answers some mailbag questions, including one of the favorite moments for this Pens season!

Happy first Monday episode of June! It's time for some hard truth's about...Evgeni Malkin. Hunter explains why he's tired of all this weird hate that goes his way, even though he's one of the four best players in the team's history. He also talks about how he's never going anywhere, especially with an NMC, and how long his next contract will be. After that, he talks about Frederik Anderson as a goalie option for next year. Is he the best of the free agent crop to tag team with Jarry? What does a contract for him look like? Finally, we go around the league and he gives thoughts on the four playoff series' still going and how they'll shake out.

Ron Hextall didn't pull a Jim Rutherford at his end-of-season press conference and Hunter is THRILLED about it. He goes into what Hextall said about this season and the series against the Islanders, plus what he's looking for in the offseason. How can the Penguins accomplish getting tougher and getting some size into the lineup? Who are some options in free agency? Hunter also explains why it's the right call from Hextall to bring back most of the team next season, while also improving around the edges. After that, he gets into some Brian Burke comments from the last few days before finishing the episode calling out the people defending Mark Scheifele for no reason.

Another day, another guest on an episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast, and today, that's Wesley Uhler from ESPN Pittsburgh. They go all into the Penguins' loss against the Islanders as Wes gives his opinion on what the team should do in goal for next season. SHould Brian Rust be dangled for a good package? Wes wonders about that as he's almost been a 30 goal scorer two years in a row. What would be a realistic return would he be? And why wouldn't you want to pay him his next contract? They also touch on Mike Sullivan and why it's a no-brainer for him to come back for at least another season. Finally, they talk about what Hextall has to do this offseason to improve the team around the edges as there will definitely be some changes made.

A new month, heck a new weekday, also means another episode of the Locked On Penguins. Hunter is joined by Jeff from Penguins Twitter (radimzahorna is his @) as they chat everything from Penguins offseason goals to NHL officiating. Does Jeff see PO Joseph on the team full time? Who does he see them protecting in the expansion draft? Does he still have faith in Tristan Jarry? After that, they get into the take about NHL officiating and how Jeff thinks it's ruining the sport. What does he want to see moving forward? Has it been benefiting lesser-skilled teams this season? Finally, they touch on the David & Sarah Ayers tweets and why they were wrong to go at Danny from The Pens Blog.

The last episode of this week deals with another upsetting thing...locker room cleanouts. Hunter touches on what the players said, namely Kris Letang, as he wants to retire with Crosby and Malkin as Penguins for life. Bryan Rust also gave an interesting answer on his future with the team as he's one year out from being a UFA. Could he be on the trade block this summer? Was Marcus Pettersson happy with his game? Hunter also touches on Elliotte Friedman's 31 thoughts podcast where he talks about the Pens...does he foresee big shakeups? Does he think they'll add a veteran goalie? Finally, the show ends with some Mike Sullivan talk as he should start to be on the hot seat for next season, but not fired yet.

I am sad to report to you all that yes, the Pittsburgh Penguins season has come to an end. In this episode, Hunter goes in on Tristan Jarry as this was a flashback to Marc-Andre Fleury's meltdowns from 2010, 2012, and 2013. Is there a way for him to be back on this team next season, let alone start? He also discusses the one and only reason why Pittsburgh lost this series, in case it wasn't obvious. Also discussed: Should Mike Sullivan be on the hot seat? What tweaks does this team need? Who are some goaltending options for next season? All that, plus squashing Jake Guentzel trade rumors, on this episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast.

Here we are again: The Pittsburgh Penguins face elimination against the New York Islanders. Pittsburgh will try to win their first elimination game in three years tonight, at their house of horrors: The Nassau Coliseum. In honor of this game, Hunter brings on Mad Chad from the 412 Sports Talk podcast to preview the game and to talk everything about this series. Is it really just down to goaltending for this series? Has this been Kris Letang's best play since the 2016 playoffs? If they bow out here or on Friday, should they go get a veteran goaltender in the offseason? The two also touch on what the Pens need to do tonight to extend this series back to Pittsburgh, and a whole lot more.
