Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

In the first episode of November, Hunter goes over some of the latest news around the league and that starts with former Pittsburgh Penguin Dominik Kahun signing with the Edmonton Oilers. Hunter talks about the value that the Oilers are getting with Kahun as he's one of the most versatile players in the league. Where is he the best fit in their lineup though? Hunter also imagines a third line with Jared McCann and Dominik Kahun next season since the Penguins could've signed him at $975K instead of paying Cody Ceci or Evan Rodrigues. After that, Hunter gets into NHL.com's top 20 defensemen article and looks to see if they made any errors. Why is Drew Doughty the most overrated defenseman in this league? Did they finally give love to Kris Letang. Finally, Hunter starts this new segment where he'll be doing a season review for one player each episode. Today we started with John Marino and Hunter goes into how outstanding his rookie season was and what to expect from him moving forward.

Canada officially announced their roster for the World Junior Championships and one very notable Pittsburgh Penguin player has officially made it. That would be Samuel Poulin, who's projected to be in the top six of their lineup. Is that tournament almost like a tryout for him to see if he can play on the Penguins this season? Hunter discusses that, plus just how stacked Team Canada is, going into these World Juniors. Could the Rangers send Alexis Lafreniere or even Kaapo Kakko over? There's the possibility of that as well. After that, since it's Halloween eve, Hunter goes into some of the most haunted moments in Penguins history. Which playoff series losses are up there? Which trade (or trades) still haunt Penguins fans to this day? All that, plus many more haunted plays on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

Now we're doing Dale Tallon rumors? Rob Rossi of The Athletic reported on Tuesday that the Penguins are interested in bringing Tallon into their front office alongside Jim Rutherford and Hunter explains why that's just an awful idea. He's not a good general manager (never was to begin with) and he's also being investigated by the NHL for using a racial slur inside the bubble. Hunter also explains that with the hiring of Trevor Daley, it would just be a slap to the face with it. After that, Hunter gets into the AHL's announcement of starting their season February 5th. Is the NHL likely to fall suit as January 1st doesn't look likely? How many games will the schedule likely be? Finally, Hunter talks about some free agents that still haven't signed. Is there a fit on the team for Mikael Granlund? Does Erik Haula makes some sense? All that, plus much more on this latest episode.

The Penguins finally did a couple things that Hunter can talk about and he brings back Tyler (iFishyHD) from Penguins twitter to get his opinions about them as well. What are his thoughts on the Karmanos firing? Is Jason Botterill going to be back? The two then get into some potential big theories behind these moves...one of them being if this was ownership mandated? Is this the start of the Penguins going fully into an analytics front office? Has Mario removed one of the "Yes Men" from Jim's staff like Jim did to Mike Sullivan's coaching staff? After that, the two also talk about the Cody Ceci signing, plus a long discussion towards the end about the EA NHL game franchise and what changes need to be made.

There was finally some news around the league today after a bunch of slow days and Hunter starts breaking it down with the loss of Dominik Simon to the Calgary Flames. Was it surprising to see Simon go to Calgary for league minimum? Should the Penguins have signed him instead of someone like Evan Rodrigues to fill a depth role? Hunter ponders that, even though Simon is great analytically with a poor shooting percentage. Besides that, Hunter breaks down the other signings that happened today with Denis Gurianov to Connor Brown, and even Dmitry Kulikov. After that, Hunter looks at some quotes from Jim Rutherford to Seth Rorabaugh from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and questions what he and his hockey operations look at when they see a player like Cody Ceci. All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

Some more of these "reverse retro" jerseys have been leaked after the Penguins one was and Hunter is here to give his thoughts on them and if more are potentially coming. How bad do the Flyers and Golden Knights one's look? Are the Capitals going to bring back the "screaming eagle" in red this time? There's also the potential that these are only worn for just a couple select games but as more get rumored, Hunter will be here to react to them. Hunter also talks about watching some video on Cody Ceci on Youtube and detailing some of the weaknesses in his game and if they're truly fixable. Finally, Hunter talks about some potential AHL call-ups for the Penguins next season when injuries happen. Could Sam Miletic get his first call-up? What about Phil Varone? All that, plus much more in this episode of Locked On Penguins.

We've officially hit the dog days of the NHL offseason as a lot of free agents have signed their contracts and the those that haven't are still sorting through their offers. There likely won't be too much news around the league on most days but Hunter is back with another episode and he starts today's one with some World Juniors talk. He discusses when the tournament will take place, plus which countries will be in each group. Also, which Pittsburgh Penguins prospects will likely be representing at the World Juniors? Which are likely to not get an invite? Hunter touches on that, plus talks about the Blackhawks statement to their fans today about rebuilding and how that may not be far away for the Penguins. Finally, in the last segment, Hunter takes some listener questions, including one on his favorite Penguins player ever that's not a star player.

Cody Ceci was of course signed over the weekend by the Pittsburgh Penguins and Hunter is here to break it all down as he's going to be the number six defenseman heading into the season. What is his ceiling for just a one year contract? Is there any part of his game that can actually improve at this stage of his career? Hunter goes over that, and also explains how he would be easier to bench if he plays bad as he's on just a one-year deal and barely even making above $1M for next season. After that, Hunter talks about the rumored new jersey that's coming to the Penguins next season and why they should just stick to the regular black diagonal Pittsburgh jerseys. Having them in white just wouldn't feel right, plus could the Robo Penguin make a return at some point. Finally, Hunter pays tribute to Mike "Doc" Emrick, who announced his broadcasting retirement earlier today.

Jon Chik of Locked On Rangers decided to stop by for a special crossover episode of Locked On Penguins today, especially to get his thoughts on the Rangers signing of Jack Johnson. What is his ceiling for next year? Does he actually have good penalty-killing ability as Jacques Martin says he does? Hunter tries to answer those questions, then the two hosts go into more talk about Jesper Fast. Was that contract the steal of the offseason so far? Or was it potentially Craig Smith? All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins!

Another day, another new guest joins Locked On Penguins and this time, it's Doug Glattke (Doug_Glattke) from Penguins Twitter. Hunter has Doug give him his thoughts on the new-look third line and if the Penguins have done enough for their bottom six, plus Doug has a defensive target in mind to challenge Chad Ruhwedel for the number six spot on the depth chart. How has he done throughout his career? Was he misused during his time with his former team? Doug answers those questions, plus gives his thoughts on who should have the last spot on the Penguins top power play unit between Jason Zucker and Kasperi Kapanen. All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.
