Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

With the day after the Patric Hornqvist trade, Hunter touches on more of Mike Matheson and what changes he needs to make to his game so that he can be successful during his tenure in Pittsburgh. Are there too many turnovers in his game? What does he need to do in the defensive zone better? Hunter answers those after looking at some of his film through some videos on Twitter, plus is Matheson taking Jack Johnson's spot? Jim Rutherford today said Matheson would be on the third pairing if there was a game which means Johnson would be competing with Chad Ruhwedel so what's the Penguins next move there? Also, Hunter touches on how it's good that GMJR won't be too active in free agency and finishes the episode with some talk about the Stanley Cup Final.

The Patric Hornqvist deal became official today and Hunter brings on Cam Easton (NotThatFehr) from Pittsburgh Penguins twitter onto the show again to break it down with him and get his thoughts on the deal. They talk about how great of a player Patric Hornqvist was and how even though it made sense to move him, it's still going to sting for quite awhile. They also breakdown the logjam on the left side of their defense as they have too many layers there now. Who's on their way out? Would GMJR dare trade Brian Dumoulin and make the team even worse? Both are questions they try to answer, and they also look at what Matheson and Sceviour will bring to the team, especially Matheson's ability to lead the breakout and gain the offensive zone. Finally, they close with what's coming next and if this is going to get worse for the Penguins.

There's never a dull moment in the Penguins offseason as there's a rumored Patric Hornqvist for Mike Matheson trade that's potentially going to go through today. With that, Hunter brings Geoff from Pensblog on to talk about the rumored deal and what it would mean for the Penguins. Could there be a defenseman on the way out if Matheson comes in? What are his best attributes? Could he get time on the power play? The two discuss all those questions, plus look at other options if this trade doesn't go through, including Kevin Shattenkirk. And finally, should we be all concerned about term as the Crosby/Malkin window only has a couple more years left? All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

A lot of rumors were surrounding the Penguins today and Jeff (LetangCult) from Penguins Twitter joins Hunter to talk all about it, especially about Chris Tanev. The two talk about how bad it would be to sign him, especially with term and for around $5M per season as he's going to be 31 years old and has never played a full season. Jeff also brings up an interesting Bryan Rust trade proposal that would make Penguins fans happy (probably one of the only ones that would regarding the player). Plus, what else could Jeff see the Penguins doing in free agency? All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

Jared McCann surprisingly agreed to a two-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday afternoon and Hunter is here to break it all down for you guys. He explains why that deal is a bargain with the numbers he's put up in a Penguin sweater and why he's poised to rebound after a horrid second half of last season. Plus, who should flank his left wing if they keep him at third line center? Hunter then goes into the Stanley Cup Final and previews the matchup between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Dallas Stars. Who will prevail? Hunter makes his prediction and also talks about what the big x-factor line will be for the Lightning in the series. Finally, Hunter touches on the news about Alex Pietrangelo and why the Blues need to figure out a way to make this work.

Jared McCann was the subject of a lot of talk on Penguins Twitter today as Rob Rossi of The Athletic wrote an article looking at if the Penguins should trade or keep him and Hunter gives his thoughts on the article, plus if an upgrade is even out there over McCann. Would a Max Domi for Jared McCann swap work if the team is really interested in him? Hunter answers that, plus much more surrounding that situation. Hunter then talks about the Marc-Andre Fleury rumors as he could be on his way out of Vegas. Does a reunion in Pittsburgh make sense? Hunter ponders that, plus how it could look better if DeSmith is the backup to Jarry. Finally, Hunter touches on the Eric Staal trade from Wednesday and why that was just a very odd trade for the Wild.

Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette had a story about some third line center targets go live today and Hunter breaks down some of the targets in that article, most notably Philip Danault and Chris Tierney. Hunter explains how Danault would be a great fit but the cost to acquire would be too much, while also talking about Tierney and how underrated he is at this point in his career. Tierney is an RFA going into next season so what could the cost to acquire him be? Hunter touches on that, plus how the other targets outside the organization don't seem to make the most sense. He then goes into the Conference Final matchups and how Dallas was able to advance to the Stanley Cup Final, plus how Tampa just needs to finally finish the job and meet them there. Finally, Hunter gives his thoughts on the Peter Laviolette hire in Washington as it's likely he's going to kill their offense.

Another week means more episodes of Locked On Penguins and Hunter is back to discuss the latest report that Jim Rutherford is looking for a new assistant general manager. Would Jason Botterill be a good fit back in Pittsburgh? Hunter ponders that as it was mentioned in Josh Yohe's latest article for The Athletic as the Penguins gave lost a number of assistant GM's over the years. Hunter also dives into some more GMJR comments as he wants to dip into free agency and why Penguins fans should be hiding their wife and kids as GMJR has never been good with free agency. Finally, Hunter touches on the Conference Final matchups, plus a small rant on the GM of the year award winner being announced!

Hunter is back on this episode of Locked On Penguins and right as he starts recording, the Nick Bjugstad trade breaks so Hunter dives into that and what it means for the Penguins going forward. Is the return good enough for Bjugstad despite all the injuries he's had? Could there be a move coming in the near future after this? These are just a couple of questions that Hunter ponders about this trade, plus he answers a couple mailbag questions, including if Jared McCann will be the third line center going into next season. Finally, Hunter touches on the conference final matchups and the latest that's going on with both of those series'.
