Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

With season 2 of the Locked On Penguins Podcast in full swing, that means more new guests for this show and today Hunter is joined by Dany (based_otter) from Penguins Twitter to talk about the Penguins offseason. Hunter gets Dany's thoughts on Mark Jankowski and Evan Rodrigues as they figure to be on the Penguins third line for next season and if they're going to be good fits for the team. Dany also brings up Marc-Andre Fleury and how relieved he is that he likely won't be on the team as Vegas Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon confirmed yesterday. Finally, Hunter asks Dany how comfortable he is with the team going into next season and what could be next for Jim Rutherford this offseason.

Rumors about Marc-Andre Fleury continue to be talked about on social media and in articles and Hunter is here to tell you all that there is no reason for this reunion to happen. He talks about how the Penguins would be foolish to waste assets, whether that be prospects or players, to bring him back in a position where he wouldn't even be an upgrade for them. Plus, when is the only time they should ever even think about bringing him back? Hunter answers that, then goes into why Jim Rutherford should've waited out the market a little bit more. Pittsburgh could've had Jesper Fast for $2M per year or even Craig Smith for $3.1M per if they would've moved just a little bit of salary out. Hunter also adjusts his free agency grade a bit after those contracts came out. Finally, in the last segment, he goes around the league and talk about some of the other signings and how some bad teams have gotten better!

Free Agent Frenzy got off to a slower start than normal, but despite that, the Pittsburgh Penguins still made some moves. Hunter gives his thoughts on the Penguins bringing back Evan Rodrigues, and the newcomer Mark Jankowski as those were the only two signings for the Penguins today. Can Jankowski get back to his level that he displayed just a season ago? Should the Penguins have gone after some players with more offensive upside instead? Hunter ponders those questions, plus talks about what the lineup will look like now with those additions. Next, he goes around the league and gives his thoughts on some other signings, including Jack Johnson to the New York Rangers and Justin Schultz to the Washington Capitals. Finally, he looks at some of the overpayments that occurred across the league today.

It's the night before free agent frenzy which means it's time to talk some free agents! Hunter is back with another episode of Locked On Penguins and he first brings up some listener's free agent ideas that he was tweeted at today and if some of these players are good fits. Is Anthony Duclair a pipe dream. Would Troy Stecher be a good fit on the right side? Could Alexander Wennberg regain his form here? These are all questions Hunter ponders before moving to Rob Rossi and Josh Yohe's article on The Athletic where they wrote about what they've been hearing going into tomorrow. Hunter touches on some of it, including why there's no need to bring Marc-Andre Fleury back. Finally, Hunter ends the show by talking about forward Jesper Fast and how he would be the PERFECT signing for the Penguins bottom-six.

Another Pittsburgh Penguins trade was announced today and we finally got the Matt Murray deal as he's been dealt to the Ottawa Senators. The Penguins got a second round pick, plus Jonathan Gruden in the deal and Hunter is here to break it all down. Was this the best the Penguins could've hoped for here? Plus, Hunter also has a message for a portion of Penguins fans who treated Murray badly over his tenure here. After that, Hunter gets into the Penguins second-round selection as they took goaltender Joel Blomqvist. What's the scouting report on him? Was it fine to take a goaltender there and not a forward or defenseman? Finally, Hunter then goes into what's next for the team as free agency draws near and talks about a potential bottom six target.

There's never a dull moment in the Pittsburgh Penguins offseason as today, the Penguins bought out Jack Johnson's contract. Hunter talks all about that in the opening segment of the podcast as Penguins Twitter went crazy and hr gives his thoughts on how this is so overdue. Just how much better does this one move make them? Hunter answers that, then brings Geoff from The PensBlog back on the podcast and they talk even more about it. Was there really no market for Johnson? How much will Mike Matheson benefit from not having to play with him? They answer those questions, plus go into the Tristan Jarry contract and how it looks to be a good deal for the Penguins. All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

In the final episode in the month of September, Hunter brought on Danny (ShireyIrving) from Penguins Twitter, who writes for The PensBlog, and they discuss everything about the offseason so far. What were Danny's thoughts on the Hornqvist deal? Has he changed some of those thoughts as it's been about a week since the trade happened? Where does he see Colton Sceviour fitting into the lineup? The two also discuss if the third pairing would be good enough if Chad Ruhwedel would be playing next to Mike Matheson, plus what does GMJR need to do to have this offseason be considered a success to Danny? All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

With the NHL season over and Tampa Bay winning the Stanley Cup, it doesn't mean this podcast stops rolling. Hunter is back with another episode and touches on what the Pittsburgh Penguins, specifically general manager Jim Rutherford, can learn from the Lightning winning the Stanley Cup. He talks about how the Penguins just need to keep adding pieces and addressing their weaknesses to just go make another run at a Stanley Cup, just like how the Lightning did. What other kinds of trades should they look for as well. He also touches on some more line combinations for next season in the next segment. Is Sam Poulin ready to make the team? If so, where is his best fit in the lineup? Finally, he talks about what the NHL can do for next season with potential hybrid bubbles or just regular travel to arenas with no fans (or some fans) in them.

The Patric Hornqvist deal is still the main storyline going around with the Penguins and Hunter is back to talk about it, and how he's feeling a bit better about the deal a few days later. How much of an upgrade could Matheson-Ruhwedel be despite not having Hornqvist? What are some other areas Matheson needs to work on for this game? Hunter answers both of those questions, plus talks about the Stanley Cup Final as the NHL season is just about to wrap up. To end the episode, Hunter touches on the Marc Staal trade and how there could be something similar with Jack Johnson as the Penguins would have to send a sweetener for a team to take him. Could they take a lesser return for Matt Murray if they attach Johnson to him? All that, plus more on this episode of Locked On Penguins.
