Locked On Saints - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints get a much needed victory heading into the bye with a big win against the Washington Football Team. Marshon Lattimore led the way for the Saints defense in a huge matchup against Terry McLaurin. Meanwhile Jameis Winston excited and impressed bouncing back from two early turnovers and punter Blake Gillikin keeps WFT's offense operating from deep within their own territory.

New Orleans came into this game tied for first in redzone defense only allowing TDs 33% of the time and held up to that ranking against Taylor Heinicke and the WFT offense. However, the Saints continue to be slow in the third quarter. Something the team will likely try to address with scripted plays and returning talent after the bye week.

Michael Thomas, Kwon Alexander, Wil Lutz, Erik McCoy, Tre'Quan Smith, and many others could turn this New Orleans Saints defense into an entirely new team in the weeks following the Week 6 bye. Carrying a 3-2 record into a bye week that was initially considered too early, now looks to be the best case scenario right on time.

The New Orleans Saints fell victim to some curious moments in last week's loss to the New York Giants. From that game came a lot of questions about QB Jameis Winston and head coach Sean Payton and the trust between the two. But is trust really the dynamic at play? Or is it something more nuanced? How the New Orleans Saints move forward could plummet their end of year aspirations or skyrocket them into top-10 offensive consideration. How returns like Michael Thomas, Tre'Quan Smith, Terron Armstead, and Erik McCoy factor in will be key.

Keys to victory for the New Orleans Saints offense aren't just about one quarterback. How Taysom Hill can play a large role in this matchup with the Washington Football Team and why being under center is not the answer. Analytics show that winning on early downs will be important for the Saints in Washington as they are at the bottom of the league in 3rd down defense.

On the defensive side, a couple of Ohio State Buckeyes are the marquee matchup. Washington's Terry McLaurin will look to continue his streak of catches without drops up against former teammate Marshon Lattimore who looks to help the Saints defense rebound after the Giants loss. Cameron Jordan in for an important game in pass rush up against a sub-par WFT right side, and why the Saints defense should neither bend nor break for the sake of the offense.

The New Orleans Saints, led by Jameis Winston and Alvin Kamara will look to find balance in their offense as they travel to Landover, MD to take on the Washington Football team and young quarterback Taylor Heinicke.

A matchup for the ages could come to light with former Ohio State Buckeyes cornerback Marshon Lattimore and wide receiver Terry McLaurin face off while the WFT offense fights off injuries all over their skill position areas.

Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints offense will look to maintain their aggression, get ahead early, and stay ahead after an uncharacteristic fold against the New York Giants last weekend. Demario Davis and the Saints defense will look for a bounce back performance at FedEx Field.

Jameis Winston put some good tape up as the New Orleans Saints dropped their Sunday home-opener tot he New York Giants. Throwing players open, hitting downfield receivers in stride, and showing improvement with ball placement. While Tre'Quan Smith and Michael Thomas reportedly look good to return soon according to WR Coach Curtis Johnson, it will likely not happen until after the bye week. But there are some indications that the passing game can hit its stride before then, if the opportunities are given.

Rookie linebacker Pete Werner had a great game against the Giants. Despite the loss, he put together several plays that stood out and show that he's a viable option next to Demario Davis until Kwon Alexander returns.

Tony Jones Jr will miss 3-4 weeks with his injury, in the meanwhile Devine Ozigbo makes his return to the Crescent City. The Saints also moved on from kicker Aldrick Rosas, signing Cody Parkey as his replacement.

WWL-TV Sports Director Doug Mouton joins to discuss what went wrong against the New York Giants, the return to the Superdome, and what has to go right in Washington against the Washington Football Team next weekend.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton discussed several decisions throughout this weekend's loss to the New York Giants. Highlighting where execution factored in for better or worse. Would Coach Payton call the Taysom Hill pass again? What about passing on the 42-yard field goal? What went right on Jameis Winston's TD pass to Kenny Still that called back vs. what went wrong on the Taysom Hill interception targeting Deonte Harris?

Peter Werner had a fantastic performance, he, Payton Turner (when healthy), and Paulson Adebo have been standouts as rookies. But Werner in particular has helped to alleviate the big loss of Kwon Alexander who is now available to come off of injured reserve but may need more time to recover from his injury.

Paulson Adebo struggled in the third game of his career after several good games to open up the season. Is it time to move to Bradley Roby? Or will maintaining his confidence long term be more important? What happened in the areas that Adebo usually thrives in were replicated in Marshon Lattimore's game and may show that Adebo deserves another show before pulling him out of the starting role.

The New Orleans Saints and Sean Payton receiving criticism for play calling in 27-21 overtime loss to the New York Giants. Jameis Winston and the Saints passing attack looked to be meshing well until one key decision, followed by a curious drought, set up a turning point.

Meanwhile, the Saints defense struggled when it mattered most, allowing over 200 passing yards to Daniel Jones and company in the fourth quarter and lone OT possession. Demario Davis, Cameron Jordan, and Malcolm Jenkins all took on accountability for the defense's woes, but there were struggles all over as the game closed out.

What needs to shift for the Saints and why is it important to do so sooner rather than later? The Washington Football Team could make things challenging for the gauntlet that awaits the Saints after the bye week.

Alvin Kamara should have a feature role on offense helping move the ball up and down the field through both the run and passing game. Meanwhile the passing game and Jameis Winston have a golden opportunity to pick up the pace against the weakened Giants offense.

Keep a keen eye on Cesar Ruiz now that Will Clapp is off of IR, as well as Calvin Throckmorton and James Hurst who will be debuting in place of the injure Terron Armstead. Can the receivers get going against the Giants secondary? And will the Saints defense continue to impress?

The most important player on the defensive side in this game will be Demario Davis as he QBs the top-6 defense waiting to match up with a hampered Giants passing attack and offensive line. Meanwhile, Adam Trautman could have a key role in the success fo the team on Sunday. As well the New Orleans Saints fanbase as Who Dat Nation will be in full effect at the Caesars Superdome.

New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson has made the succession plan for the team and their NBA partners the New Orleans Pelicans public. A remarkably gracious plan that will help to bolster the New Orleans community and that hopes to keep the Saints and Pelicans in the city long-term even if purchased by someone outside of the region.

On the offensive side, the New Orlean Saints should be leaning on star running back Alvin Kamara. New York Giants linebacker Blake Martinez is out for the season and his young replacement is dealing with a hamstring injury. That should open the for for a huge game from AK.

On the defensive side, the Saints should be focused on not shooting themselves in the foot. They have the clear edge over the Giants, and the who dat nation may be the biggest key of all.

The New Orleans Saints and star running back Alvin Kamara should present a very tough matchup for the New York Giants this weekend. After losing LB Blake Martinez for the season, the Giants may have no answer for how to defend Kamara, particularly in the passing game.

The task doesn't get much easier for the Giants on the other side of the ball as they deal with two hamstring injuries for WRs Darius Slayton and Sterling Shephard. The Saints' defense has been on fire to start of the season allowing only 14 points per game and ranking third against the run. If New Orleans shuts down Saquon Barkley, the Giants might have to rely on QB Daniel Jones and the hampered air attack against Marshon Lattimore, Demario Davis, Marcus Williams and the rest of a talented Saints defense.

And they'd have to do so while the Saints get their of a full-capacity Caesars Superdome as well. The first of which since January of 2020.

The New Orleans Saints have yet to pass for more than 200 yards through the air. But fans shouldn't be concerned about the production thus far. Jameis Winston, Marquez Callaway, and the Saints offensive line need time to settle in. With reps will come trust, cohesion, and most important of all, timing.

The Saints defense is the real deal. Ranking top-ten or top-five in many important statistical categories, the unit is operating much better than expected led by some impressive individual performances. Marshon Lattimore is the highest ranked cornerback by Pro Football Focus, Demario Davis is playing like the best defender in football, the defensive line is putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks, and the team is tied at the top of the league in turnover differential. Topped off by excellent safety play and impressive rookie debuts, the Saints defense can take their team a long way.

Doug Mouton of WWL-TV joins the show to break down why the Saints passing attack woes shouldn't be of tremendous concern thanks to their run game and defense. Doug also highlights what to expect from the Saints as they host the Giants on Sunday and how a packed Caesars Superdome impacts the team's first full-capacity home game since January of 2020.
