It's been a very hot week for Arizona State Sun Devils football and the positional battles have been perhaps just as hot. From the quarterbacks to the offensive and defensive lines and to the secondary, there are virtually no jobs that are safe in the best way possible. It's brought out the best in the Sun Devils both in competition and in comradery. For Kenny Dillingham and the rest of the Sun Devils' staff, it's been a welcoming sight to see each and every player competing their hearts out, even in the blistering heat. We have gotten to see plenty of players get opportunities and some guys who have played or worked out in multiple positions. WE HAVE ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS FOOTBALL, BABY! Training camp is officially underway for Arizona State and it is hotter than heck in the desert. Aside from the heat, head coach Kenny Dillingham kept spirits and morale high with music, popsicles, and immaculate vibes. It was truly a great way to kick off day one of training camp. As we round up what we learned from day one the biggest thing to notice was the positional versatility. Many of the coaches last week talked about guys being comfortable in more than one spot and that was exactly the case during practice, including BJ Green playing on the edge and Montana Warren getting some reps in the slot. It was also nice to see nearly everyone on the field and participating with no restrictions, including Joey Ramos and Michael Matus who missed most, if not all of last season. The boys were having fun and even in the blistering heat, there was motivation to work hard. Training camp is officially here for Arizona State Sun Devils football! It's been a long wait, but we are officially one month away from the Sun Devils' 2023 kickoff against Southern Utah. But before we can get that far we have questions to answer... quite frankly there's a lot of them. It starts at quarterback, where a three-man race between Trenton Bourguet, Drew Pyne, and Jaden Rashada will define the season for Arizona State. The guys surrounding them, be it the offensive line or the pass catchers or the running backs, will also need to be sorted out sooner rather than later, and camp gives us the best opportunity to figure out which returning players, transfers, or freshmen will make that impact. Defensively, this time is in flux but not in a bad way. The Sun Devils have a new defensive philosophy under Brian Ward with very few players guaranteed significant playing time. Aside from Ro Torrence and Jordan Clark, there are truly no players with any promised opportunities. Instead, it will be a wide-open competition that virtually anybody can win. The name of the game for Arizona State Sun Devils football, especially on defense, will be guys who can play multiple roles and be the keyword of the day - versatile. In a sit down with defensive backs coach Bryan Carrington and defensive coordinator Brian Ward, it was clear that no single defender would play just one role. They want defensive backs to play inside, outside, over the top, in the box, and everything in between. Coach Ward wants his defensive linemen to play on the interior and on the edge and for his linebackers to call out plays. it'll be about veteran leadership and experience, too. Is anybody talking about Arizona State Sun Devils football's defense? You'd be forgiven if you haven't, considering the Kenny Dillingham experience will generate lots of fanfare for the offense, but we encourage you to give the defense some attention, too. It's a unit full of changes and more excitement than given credit for with a blend of youngsters and veterans. Unfortunately, there are some guys who many aren't talking enough about however and we're here to hype them up. Host Richie Bradshaw loves a lot of the Sun Devils' defenders, but we highlight a returning veteran on the defensive line back from injury in Michael Matus, who has become buried in the line's depth chart, as well as defensive backs Chris Edmonds and Jordan Clark. There are a lot of players to be excited about in 2023 for the Arizona State Sun Devils, so you'd be forgiven if you forgot about some of their returning players from a lost 2022 season. The PAC-12 has unveiled its preseason All-Conference first and second teams as well as some honorable mentions and it should have Arizona State Sun Devils football fans upset. Not a single Sun Devil was named to first- or second-team and just four players, Cameron Skattebo, Jalin Conyers, Ro Torrence, and Slater Zellers were listed as honorable mentions. The absence of Elijhah Badger is tone-deaf to say the least, while the decision not to have a single Sun Devil on either team is maddening. Could the reasoning be that these Sun Devils are just underrated? Or is it that the expectations are so low for Arizona State that there is no respect for their program or players? To begin the Kenny Dillingham era, the offensive-minded head coach went and grabbed four-star quarterback Jaden Rashada to become the future of the Arizona State Sun Devils football program. Rashada was the seventh-ranked quarterback out of Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg, California, and a top-100 recruit in the country. He will come to Arizona State, where his father, Harlen Rashada played ball in the 90s and face the challenge of living up to his expectations. Between a cannon attached to his right arm and the mobility to become a lethal dual threat, Rashada checks nearly every box you look for in the modern quarterback.
