Locked On White Sox - Daily Podcast On The Chicago White Sox

AJ Pollock should be exercising his option as the Chicago White Sox will be exploring their own. Pollock is set to make a lot of money and there's no reason he will turn down that opportunity to test the market. Pollock was traded to the White Sox for Craig Kimbrel just a week before Opening Day 2022. Finally, the White Sox had an answer to their outfield struggles. Pollock put up solid numbers in 2021 and brought a veteran presence as well as playoff experience. Pollock's arrival was met with a lot of excitement on the South Side but an inconsistent April led to a shaky season. Pollock battled a hamstring issue early on and struggled to get into a groove once he returned to the lineup. His numbers fell off from 2021 and he bounced all over the outfield for the White Sox. With Pollock most certainly in the fold for the White Sox in 2023, what other options does the team have?

Pedro Grifol is expected to be named the next Chicago White Sox manager. No shortage of rumors, reports and statements that claim longtime Kansa City Royals coach, Pedro Grifol, will be named the next White Sox manager perhaps before the World Series ends. Grifol has been the Royals bench coach for the last few seasons but has held a variety a different roles within the organization since he came over in 2013. Apparently, Grifol thoroughly impressed during his interviews and Jerry Reisndorf, Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn were all in consensus. Grifol does not have prior managerial experience and has not been part of a championship team since 2015 but he is an outside hire. More rumors circulated that several White Sox coaches will not be asked back and former Toronto Blue Jays manager, Charlie Montoyo, will be the next White Sox bench coach. It appears that the White Sox are interested in change... hopefully it does not stop with Pedro Grifol.

Liam Hendriks continued to be a force both on and off the field for the Chicago White Sox in 2022. Hendriks came to the White Sox in January of 2021. It was a huge off-season move for the White Sox as they prepared to transition from 'rebuild' mode to 'win now' mode. Hendriks was an All-Star in 2021 and won the AL Reliver of the Year award. Hendriks offers no shortage of emotion and passion when he's on the mound. He's got electric stuff and was once again an All-Star for the White Sox in 2022. An injury sidelined him for three weeks in June and limited his ability to pitch more than one inning at a time down the stretch. Hendriks is hoping a normal off-season will help him get healthy and perhaps get him back to his 2021 form. Hendriks is a fan favorite and vocal leader for the White Sox. He did not mince words in regards to the White Sox shortcomings this past season. Hopefully he gets healthy and his ready to contribute in 2023.

Josh Harrison was the latest in a long list of Opening Day second baseman for the Chicago White Sox. Since 2013, there has been a different second baseman on Opening Day. In 2022, Josh Harrison was the choice. Harrison was signed just a few weeks before the season started and ended up playing 90 games at the position for the Sox. In total, seven players occupied second baseman over the course of the 2022 season for the White Sox. Harrison could potentially be back in 2023 if the Sox pick up his option but perhaps the White Sox need to invest in a long term solution? The White Sox need to get better defensively and also should look to acquire some power at the second base position. If it's not Josh Harrison in 2023, there are several in house options but whatever the Sox decide to do... hopefully they find some consistency.

Gavin Sheets provides lefty power however the Chicago White Sox should keep him out of RF. In 2022, Gavin Sheets was not set up for success and played out of position for over 80 games. Sheets is a natural first baseman but the White Sox decided to use him as a right fielder instead of acquiring a natural, proven right fielder in the offseason. The White Sox will most likely get better this offseason via the trade instead of making any high priced signings. Sheets provides coveted lefty power and can be used as the designated hitter as well so maybe the White Sox should consider trading him to an organization that could be a first basemen. The Sox must improve defensively in 2023 and it would be detrimental to that mission if Gavin Sheets roams right field. If Sheets is in a White Sox uniform in 2023, hopefully it will be for his lefty bat instead of an attempt to make him an outfielder.

Luis Robert went down swinging... with one hand... for the Chicago White Sox in 2022. Robert played less than 100 games for the White Sox in 2022. He was shut down for good in late September after a hand/wrist injury forced him to swing the bat with one hand. Luis Robert signed with the White Sox as a teenager in May of 2017. He debuted for the Sox on Opening Day in 2020 after he signed a massive contract extension the previous January. Robert is a multi-tool player that has superstar potential but a variety of injuries have limited his opportunities. Hopefully, Luis Robert is the mainstay in centerfield for many years to come. Robert could easily slug 40 HRs and knock in 100 RBIs, if he could just play 140 games. Will 2023 be the year of Luis Robert?

17 years ago the Chicago White Sox swept the Houston Astros and won the World Series. 2005 was an unbelievable regular season for the White Sox. They won 99 games and won their first division title since 2000. Although it was an exciting six months of baseball, it was nothing compared to the postseason. The White Sox went (11-1) in playoffs and captured their first championship since 1917. The Sox made serious changes after the 2004 season. They parted ways with fan favorites Carlos Lee and Magglio Ordonez while replacing them with Scott Podsednik and Jermaine Dye then bringing in catcher AJ Pierzynski. Ozzie Guillen was in his 2nd season of his first managerial job and he led the overachieving White Sox to an unforgettable season. Oct. 26th will also be a time to reflect on the magic of that 2005 season and hope for similar moments return to the South Side.

Tim Anderson's All-Star season for the Chicago White Sox was interrupted by injury in 2022. Anderson's production was stellar and he was named the starting shortstop for the American League at the midsummer classic but an injured tendon in his finger required season ending surgery in August. Tim Anderson has seen his stock continually rise his debuting with the White Sox in June of 2016. Anderson has handled the national attention well as he has been one of the leaders in the White Sox organization. This past season, rumors spread on social media in mid June about Anderson's personal life and from a fan's perspective, it looked like Tim Anderson's focus was slipping. Anderson is an extremely important piece to the Chicago White Sox puzzle and hopefully he can get himself healthy, both physically and mentally.

Yasmani Grandal struggled to produce while trying to stay healthy for the Chicago White Sox in 2022. Grandal signed a 4 yr. deal for 73 million back in 2019. It was the biggest contract ever handed out by the Chicago White Sox organization. Grandal was coming off an All-Star campaign for the Milwaukee Brewers and was ready to bring his switch hitting power to the South Side. Yasmani Grandal has battled knees issues and leg problems during his White Sox tenure, limiting his playing time as well as hampering his performance. Grandal only played in 99 games for the White Sox and was often relegated to DH or first base in 2022. Grandal sounds determined to get himself healthy for 2023.

Yoán Moncada started the 2022 season injured then proved ineffective for the Chicago White Sox. Moncada came to the White Sox organization in a trade for Chris Sale in December of 2016. White Sox fans put a lot of hope in Moncada becoming a centerpiece as well as the face of the franchise and possibly MLB for many years. Moncada has had a lot of weight on his shoulders and the expectations are almost unrealistic. In 2019, Moncada provided a glimpse to White Sox fans by hitting 25 HRs as he hit for power and average. Fans have been waiting for an encore performance and 2022 was definitely not it. Moncada struggling at the plate and looked lost in the field at times this past season. Can Moncada stay healthy, get back to basics and put up the numbers that he is capable of in 2023?
