Peggy J. Kleinplatz, Ph.D., is Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Director of Sex and Couples Therapy Training at the University of Ottawa, Canada. She was awarded the Prix d’Excellence in 2000 for her teaching of Human Sexuality. She is a Certified Sex Therapist and Educator. She is Director of the Optimal Sexual Experiences Research Team of the University of Ottawa and has a particular interest in sexual health in the elderly, disabled and marginalized populations.
Kleinplatz has edited four books, notably New Directions in Sex Therapy:
Innovations and Alternatives (2012), winner of the AASECT 2013 Book Award, Sadomasochism: Powerful Pleasures with Charles Moser, Ph.D., M.D. (2006) and Sexuality and Ageing with Walter Bouman, M.D. (2015). She is the progeny of when East meets West, when Yin meets Yang. An avid lover of life and life’s forever student, Wei “Amy” Lu has been experimenting and refining the art of achieving peace and balance through her unique understanding of Eastern philosophy and Western learnings.

At the age of thirteen, Wei and her family were among the first group of immigrants allowed to emigrate from Communist China on its new “Open Door” policy of the 1980’s. Wei’s parents were college professors who gained the rare opportunity of coming to the United States to further their higher education. Life was difficult, at first, with the entire family living on an eight-hundred-dollar student stipend, as well as facing an incredible language barrier and culture shock. These difficulties, however, did not deter the eighth grader as she treasured the blessing of being in the “land of opportunity.” In school, she adopted her American name “Amy” given by her ESL teacher. Amy studied diligently and learned the English language in three short months. As she advanced in school, she never forgot to be grateful for everything she had been given and always strove to do her best. She finished at the top of her graduating class and earned a full scholarship to Texas Tech University. After receiving a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Amy worked for Motorola as an RF design Engineer for cell phone base stations. She is currently the senior product manager for an inorganic chemical company.

Amy has been married for 23 years; she and her husband live in the DFW area and are the proud parents of two amazing young men.

In her spare time, Amy enjoys learning modern medicine and traditional holistic healing. She has completed all pre-med classes at a local college. She is learning the Chinese traditional medicine of meridians and acupressure techniques as a complimentary therapy to promoting the body’s natural healing mechanisms. She is currently a certified Reiki practitioner. As a scientist and engineer, Amy finds the body’s subtle energy system of health and well-being both intriguing and powerful. Her YouTube channel “Mother Healer” is dedicated to sharing with others her knowledge of holistic healing insights.

Through the years, Amy has realized her purpose in life is to “combine the best of East and West.” Her unique understanding and experiences from both traditional Asian and modern Western cultures are invaluable to establishing her world view. Dr. Bianca Acevedo is the Director and Founder of the Foundation for Healthy Relationships and Lives (2011), a research scientist at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), a private consultant, writer, and public speaker. She earned her B.A. in Psychology from NYU and a PhD in Social/Health Psychology from Stony Brook University. She has conducted research at the Department of Public Health at Weil Cornell Medical College in New York City; Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Justin Lehmiller received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Purdue University. He is a Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute and author of the book Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life. Dr. Lehmiller is an award-winning educator, having been honored three times with the Certificate of Teaching Excellence from Harvard University, where he taught for several years. He is also a prolific researcher and scholar who has published more than 50 academic works to date, including a textbook titled The Psychology of Human Sexuality (now in its second edition) that is used in college classrooms around the world. Dr. Lehmiller's research focuses on topics including casual sex, sexual fantasy, sexual health, and friends with benefits. His studies have appeared in all of the leading journals on human sexuality, including the Journal of Sex Research, Archives of Sexual Behavior, and The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Jen intended to be a minister or spiritual teacher early in life. She never expected to end up studying sexuality or devoting her life to furthering research on the topic. However, after profound healing happened through intimacy with her partner, Jen was convinced that sex could restore your soul, that it could heal you emotionally. That’s what happened to her. After suffering from depression and anxiety much of her life, she found her symptoms were transformed through accessing altered states of consciousness during sexual intimacy. She sought to learn the science behind this phenomenon and began to study how the brain can be rewired by states of intense pleasure during lovemaking. Jen went on to graduate studies in psychology and sex therapy. Evolutionary Psychology

Evolutionary psychology is a hybrid discipline that draws insights from modern evolutionary theory, biology, cognitive psychology, anthropology, economics, computer science, and paleoarchaeology. The discipline rests on a foundation of core premises:

Manifest behavior depends on underlying psychological mechanisms, information processing devices housed in the brain, in conjunction with the external and internal inputs that trigger their activation.
Evolution by selection is the only known causal process capable of creating such complex organic mechanisms.

Evolved psychological mechanisms are functionally specialized to solve adaptive problems that recurred for humans over deep evolutionary time.

Selection designed the information processing of many evolved psychological mechanisms to be adaptively influenced by specific classes of information from the environment.

Human psychology consists of a large number of functionally specialized evolved mechanisms, each sensitive to particular forms of contextual input, that get combined, coordinated, and integrated with each other to produce manifest behavior.
