A man has been charged with stealing a pair of famous ruby red slippers worn by Judy Garland in the movie "The Wizard of Oz," according to federal prosecutors in North Dakota. The slippers were stolen in 2005 but were recovered in a 2018 FBI operation. However, no arrests were made at that time.

The stolen ruby slippers were worn by Judy Garland during the production of the musical in 1939. Only four pairs of authentic slippers from the movie are known to exist. At the time of the theft, the slippers were insured for $1 million, but their current market value is estimated to be around $3.5 million. The slippers were on loan to the Judy Garland Museum when they were stolen, and the thief broke the display case by climbing through a window.

Further details about the case have not been provided by the U.S. Justice Department in North Dakota.

The ruby slippers are famous for their association with the iconic line from "The Wizard of Oz" when Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, clicks her heels together and says, "There's no place like home." The slippers are made from various materials, including wood pulp, silk thread, gelatin, plastic, and glass. Most of the vibrant ruby color comes from sequins, while the bows on the shoes feature red glass beads.

After the legal proceedings conclude, the staff at the Judy Garland Museum hope to bring the slippers back to Garland's hometown and display them as part of their exhibition.
