  • 233: There are No Shortcuts in Football with Bryson Barnes

Bryson Barnes grew up in a small town in Southern Utah called Milford and is the middle child of 5. Bryson grew up loving sports and played a couple competitively in high school which included football, wrestling, baseball, and track. Bryson has been playing quarterback at the University of Utah for 3 years, with his intro to college football staged at the Rose Bowl where he threw a 15 yard pass to tie the game against Ohio State with only a minute and a half left in the game. Bryson has an incredible story of going from a walk-on player to just being awarded a scholarship this month. Before his scholarship, he had picked up a part time job at Lowes just to cover his tuition, on top of his many obligations as a student athlete studying business at the University of Utah and starting quarterback for Utah's first two games of the season. Bryson is humble, hungry, and super down to earth, and I really think you'll be inspired by his work ethic and dedication to going the extra mile in all things in life.

  • 232: Unpacking Authenticity

Being "authentic" or "authenticity" can be frequently used (and sometimes even over-used) buzz words in our world currently. But I read something this week that made me totally re-think what authenticity actually means, which isn't just about trying to share unfiltered pictures or messy, imperfect moments of our lives. This definition goes deeper into self-acceptance and the way we act maybe even more importantly in our private lives and even the thought processes in our own minds and what it really takes to be able to sleep well at the end of the day knowing you stayed true to the person you are, completely and authentically.

    Time Stamps:

[00:49] - What does it mean to be authentic?

[05:57] - Corrine and Neil talk about letting go of expectations placed on yourself by you or others.

[11:34] - How do you define the core of who you are?

[15:16] - Feel all your feelings instead of trying to shove them away.

[20:25] - Are you being honest with yourself?

    [24:32] - We’re all figuring life out.

  • 226: Mental Health is Health with Dr. Braden Brown

Dr. Braden Brown is a licensed marriage and family therapist and the VP of Coaching & Counseling at Ampelis, a holistic human performance and mental wellness practice. Braden was a four-year letterman on BYU's football team from 2009-2012, where he played in all 52 games of his career and tallied 41 starts at offensive tackle. Following his BYU football career, Dr. Brown was invited to the 2013 NFL Combine and later signed a contract with the St. Louis Rams as an un-drafted free agent where he was credited with one NFL season before retiring due to a back injury.

Today we get to talk about his transition from sports to psychology, and why he pursued a PhD in medical family therapy that led him to his current career. We break down some of the reasons there's a huge stigma with athletes seeking professional help with mental health, specifically male athletes, and why mental health IS health and so vital to their well-being and performance not just in sports but in life. We're sharing all the ups and downs of this decision, what made us question whether something was a sign, and how to tell when God is telling you "no." We also share a couple of resources of counsel and advice from talks that give very clear instruction on how the Lord works with us, guiding us from the yeses to the nos in our lives and how to have the courage to reverse a decision when it's not the right thing to do after all.
