Kai Wingo’s energy in this episode is so refreshing mashaAllah. Her conversion story is another example of a uniquely easy one. With parental and community support as well as her own quest for knowledge, she was able to get her questions answered and revert to Islam. Muslim women know fashion, and as such, they know Lisa Vogl, spokesperson for modest fashion and domestic violence, and convert to Islam. Her revelation about converts post shahadah (coming to Islam) is an important reflection of the Muslim community, but even more important are her tips to step up to and for new Muslims. A good point she alludes to is that while Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, there are still a lot of people leaving Islam, and we have to consider why that’s true. A 2017 survey found 24% of Muslim Americans have left Islam, and that 55% of that group no longer identifies with any religion. *Collective shudder.*

Samihah Huq joins us to discuss her experience with food addiction and how she’s hit a wall with her doctor in terms of understanding, naming, and taming it. There are barriers to wrapping our brains around food addiction in the Muslim community, starting with the doctor’s office and leading right up to an auntie’s buffet table.
Just like any other addiction, food affects neurochemistry and failure to look at it as a passing issue, a phase, or anything other than a disease unto itself is leading us on a dangerous path. Hear about some tools to help us identify the problem, work with our doctors to name it, and come up with a recovery plan.
