Today’s show features Steve Ferreira discussing what many felt was not possible - Containergeddon Redux 2021. Steve coined this phrase months ago and it has become the word du jour of analysts describing the action during the past few months in container shipping. However, no analyst expected Containergeddon to extend past Q1. Steve does. With the spotty vaccine rates, people avoiding it altogether and a less than perfect roll-out, it will be months before the vaccine is even close enough to make a difference. Pent-up demand is going to release more gradually than expected. As pointed out by FreightWaves analysts, current personal savings rates are nearly double the rate of the five year average. If person income rises and savings trends down – we then being to experience the true release of pent up demand for goods first, services secondarily. All in all it mean for this analyst (Steve), expect Containergeddon or at least the part until Bruce Willis steps in save the day, to continue well into at least Fall 2021.
