Representative Matt Eidson from Grand Forks talks with Joel Heitkamp about the logistics of HB 1332, which would allow trained staff to carry guns in schools. Rep. Eidson is a Marine Corps veteran who served tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
The bill essentially puts the responsibility with the school if they decide that they want the program, and they have to put everything together and work with the closest police department and the Department of Homeland Security on the requirements.
"While I'm almost OK with the bill, the biggest issue I have is that you never know how you're going to react in a situation where you're being shot at until you're actually in the situation where you're being shot at," says Eidson. "You are in fight or flight mode, and if you haven't received the full immersed training like the military has, which I don't think this bill meets that requirement, I'm not confident they will be able to react in the appropriate way."
