  • BF And Mental Health (Not Always BFFs)

This week we are back on the topic of BF. Not boyfriends or b*tch fits but breastfeeding. Kaila talks with Pediatrician, IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant), and Breastfeeding Medicine Specialist, Dr. Cindy Rubin about the costs of breastfeeding in regards to a person's mental health. The two women discuss the various challenges a lactating person is confronted with when faced with the task of feeding their new bb and why it's important to keep bringing up how breastfeeding is for many, how seeking help is never a bad thing, and why it's okay to prioritize one's mental health above anything else.

  • Babysode: The Best Of Parenting

This month's Babysode is all about the best parts of being a parent! Kaila posed this question to the Parent Tell Community a few weeks back and now Kaila and Jimmy are reading, and talking about, your responses. Being a parent is hard as hell, but the list of pros is about 100x longer than the list of cons.

  • When The Cheese Doesn't Love You Back

This week's episode of Parent Tell is all about poop, intolerances, and advocating for a little one with a big tummy ache. Kaila had the absolute pleasure of talking with one of her closest friends, Emily, who just so happens to have a daughter with multiple food intolerances. We're talking dairy, eggs, AND soy. Oy. Emily tells the story of how she found out her infant daughter was reacting poorly to what Emily was eating (ahh the magic and science of breastfeeding) and what it's been like to become an advocate for your kid at doctor's appointments, especially when it seems like the doctors you are trying to rely on just aren't understanding what it means to not be able to consume three common food ingredients.

  • Thinking Safe With The Secure Dad

On this week's episode of Parent Tell, Kaila sits down with Andy Murphy, also known as The Secure Dad. Andy Murphy founded The Secure Dad in 2016 after realizing that every parent is a protector. Andy’s passion is to help families live safer, happier lives. In their discussion, Kaila and Andy touch on the difference between parenting with fear and parenting with anxiety, why it's crucial to let our kids fall sometimes, and the basic Dos and Donts of "sharenting" (that's when you are a super big fan of sharing your kid's face and life on the internet which, unfortunately, is not always the happiest place).

  • A Bit Stressy & Depressy: PPD

This week Kaila talks with Peg Sadie, a psychotherapist and resilience coach, about her experience with Postpartum Depression (PPD). Peg talks with Kaila about being surprised it took her so long to realize she had PPD considering she is a mental health professional, and the two moms bond over how just completely awful commercials about depression are. Discussions of medications, taking social media breaks, and what high functioning depression can look like make this episode insightful for all; whether you have had PPD or not, or are currently wading through that storm, it's important to keep talking. To normalize and possibly even help someone feel less alone.

  • WE'RE BACK! Babysode: Toddler Speak

Are you there? It's me, Kaila.

After a summer hiatus Parent Tell is BACK, BABY! It's been a while and Kaila has a lot to catch everyone up on but first we definitely needed a cute little Babysode about the funky things little kids say while they're still learning to talk like us speaking veterans. Kaila and Jimmy read through the hilarious and sometimes surprising ways that listeners' kids lovingly mispronounce every day words. Here's a massive hint: this is definitely an explicit episode.

  • ASSumptions

This week's episode, the last one before Parent Tell takes a short break for most of the summer, is a solo episode with just Kaila! Almost a solo Babysode, if you will, Kaila airs her grievances with those who seem to look down on motherhood and think that your life is just utterly ruined and completely over when you become a parent (so NOT true). While trying not to be too ranty and ravy Kaila points out the assumptions that many in society choose to make about parents, mostly moms, when in reality harmful judgements and comments are simply projections from the person who is saying them.
Brene Brown seriously had it right when she said that we should lead with curiosity instead of judgement.

  • Babysode: Stop Saying These, Please!

In this month's Babysode, Kaila and Jimmy read responses to the question, "What's an old fashioned parenting or pregnancy comment that needs to die?"

Because for real some of y'all are still telling new parents to "sleep when the baby sleeps" and quite frankly we have had it up to here with your useless, throw away ~advice~. Kaila and Jimmy read the submitted phrases that we still hear all too often while delving into why such comments are more harmful than helpful and a few suggestions on what to say instead.

  • Moving Through Secondary Infertility

This week on Parent Tell Kaila discusses secondary infertility with Kyla. Kyla had an extremely easy time getting pregnant with her now 6 year old, but when it came time to try and conceive a second child she was met with extreme roadblocks. Kyla explains her experience with fibroids and how it ultimately meant that she would not be having a second child. Kaila and Kyla talk about acceptance, intrusive comments from strangers, and how finding community can help you feel supported in whatever your fertility journey looks like.

Kyla Saphir is a mother, yoga instructor, early childhood educator, and the author of the new children’s book On Brighter Days. She lives in Columbia, South Carolina, with her husband, 6 year old daughter, and their wild dog, Nia.

The inspiration for the book, On Brighter Days, came from Kyla's personal experience with secondary infertility. She is the youngest of five children in her family and wanted her daughter to have siblings as well but it wasn't possible. When she looked for books for her daughter to read about their experience, the bookshelves were empty.  Kyla is passionate about high quality children's literature and so she and her daughter decided to write their own book addressing these feelings for other parents and only children!

  • Baby Nurseries: Battling The Overwhelm With Simplicity

This week's episode of Parent Tell finds Kaila discussing interior design, specifically for nurseries and kids' rooms, with Naomi Coe. Naomi Coe is the founder of Little Crown Interiors and author of the nursery design book, Your Perfect Nursery. She founded Little Crown Interiors in 2008, focusing her design studio on nurseries and child spaces after seeing this specialized skill missing from other firms.  Bringing together beauty, functionality and safety, Naomi believes in creating spaces for her clients that are unique, intentional and curated.
Kaila and Naomi have a thorough discussion about how overwhelmed most parents feel about turning one of their bedrooms into a baby's room, how little babies actually need in their nursery, and how social media has turned interior design into some perfection competition that none of us will ever win (nor should we really be striving to). While Kaila and Naomi talk about wanting items that grow with the child and the importance of safety, they also touch on the privilege that naturally comes with being able to afford luxury baby items and an interior designer in the first place.
Little Crown Interiors offers full nursery and kid’s interior design services for clients in Southern California, and E-Design services for anyone in the U.S. or Canada. Over the last 14+ years, LCI's work has been featured widely in print, web and on television including Domino, People Magazine, California Home & Design Magazine, and many more.
