Pass the Mic

In this special crossover of Pass The Mic and Once Upon A Time in Wakanda, Tyler, Earon, and Beau discuss the passing of Chadwick Boseman whose portrayals of heroic figures from Jackie Robinson to Thurgood Marshall and the iconic Black Panther had such an impact on the culture and left a legacy of excellence. We can't imagine anything more heroic and representative of picking up your cross and following your calling more than producing cultural artifacts while fighting a silent battle bravely. To a king who never yielded, rest well.

“Sometimes you need to feel the pain and sting of defeat to activate the real passion and purpose that God predestined inside of you.” – Chadwick Boseman

On July 3rd, Pastor John Onwuchekwa surprised many by telling his followers that his church, Cornerstone Church in Atlanta, had made the decision to leave the Southern Baptist Church denomination.

Jemar and Tyler sit down with Pastor John to ask all the questions: What led to this decision? Why did it take so long? What is your hope in this decision? And so much more...

Many of us have struggled with being Black and Christian in white evangelical spaces. This podcast will help encourage and inspire you in your journey.

Jemar and Tyler are back to discuss what everyone is talking about: the appointment of Senator Kamala Harris as the Vice Presidential nominee of the Democratic Party.

They discuss the inevitable reality of racism and misogynoir that has already risen up against her, the concerns about her policies, and how voters interpret her progressive record.

But most importantly, they discuss what it means to be in the tension of symbolism and structural change. How do we balance our desire to see “firsts” and the imperative of actually changing the systems that we live in? This is an important conversation, fam!

Jemar and Tyler are back with a special word for Black Christians. We know how hard it has been in this season to see people ignore and pass over your pain. We know how hard it is to feel like you’re the only one. We know how hard it is to get your hopes up only to be disappointed. We see you.

We are here with just a simple word of encouragement for you: Don’t negotiate with your dignity. It’s not worth it. You are worth more than that. It’s time to get free.

We have a special conversation for you today! We’ve been talking about the “quiet exodus” for many years, but what about when your stand for dignity forces you out? That was the case of Zee Johnson, a worship pastor in Texas who was removed from her position for speaking out about injustice. She sat down with Combing The Roots Podcast host Ally Henny to tell her story and hopefully encourage others who are in the same position. This conversation is important! Listen carefully and share widely.

After 126 years of flying as the state’s official representation, Mississippi lawmakers finally passed legislation to change its flag. One week ago, the Governor signed that legislation and the flag came down.

But what does this decision ultimately mean? Is it a win worth celebrating, and will it change the landscape of the fight against White Supremacy in the South?

To chime in on these questions, we’re joined by two people who have been at the frontlines of this fight for many years. Our very own-award-winning producer Beau York and the outstanding Chellese Grove! Together, they host the definitive podcast on the Mississippi Flag Controversy: The Red Flag Podcast.

After you listen to this conversation, head over and subscribe to their podcast as well!

This is a big one, y’all! Jemar and Tyler had the privilege of recording this podcast during our LIVE “Free To Be” Juneteenth Event. Our guest is the incomparable Rev. Dr. John Faison, Sr. He is no stranger to The Witness family. In fact, he recently was one of our Keynote speakers at our First National Conference “Joy and Justice”. He is the Senior Pastor of the historic Watson Grove Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, and one of the premier voices for justice and equity in the Black Church.

Our topic today is a spin-off from his current sermon series at The Grove, entitled Not My Jesus: Reclaiming the Messiah from ‘Merica”. This is a LANDMARK podcast episode. Listen twice and digest it all, then share it with your friends!
