  • Struggling as a Pickleball Player - Here's an Alternative

As you grow and improve as a player, struggle will be a part of the process. In this episode, we talk about struggle and how it can lead to a deeper relationship with the game of pickleball.

Whether you're trying to improve or not, you're going to struggle as a pickleball player. Struggle is what happens to us whenever we are trying to grow in anything in life, including our pickleball game.

There's going to be moments where you're out there on the court and you're wondering to yourself, 'Why am I struggling so much?'

I've been thinking a lot about this subject- STRUGGLE, player struggling.

You won't find success in your game through stagnation. Struggle will be a part of your process as a pickleball player if you want improvement, further growth and a deeper relationship with Pickleball than you currently have.

In the riff I share my thoughts of the nationals, which was awesome, a ton of fun watching all the players out there competing and giving their best.

  • 3-Phase Pickleball: Preparation, Play, and Process PLUS Handling Advice

We divide the playing experience into 3 phases: pre-play, play, and post-play. Each phase has its own purpose, and paying attention to each phase will help you get the most out of your day on the court.

The first phase is pre-play which is the phase before you step out onto the court. This phase pays dividends when you actually get out there as you hit the ball.

The second phase is while you're playing the game and in this podcast episode I explain to you two things you can do while you're playing in this phase.

The last phase is after you play the game and build your next steps.

In the riff, I'm going to continue the conversation from last week about why players give advice. We got a lot of feedback from that episode and today we're going to switch to the other side on how to deal with advice coming your way.

  • Pickleball is Messy - and that is Awesome PLUS Why Players Share "Advice"

Today we talk about messy pickleball and how we can use that to our benefit when we play. When we look at folks who are successful, we see the result of a lot of messy steps they've taken.

They've embraced the fact that pickleball is going to be messy and they use that in their improvement along the way which ends up with some level of success in their field.

As always, thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement. If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.

You'll enjoy your game better if you embrace that fact because sometimes you are going to miss a return of serve or to hit a short return of serve and other messy shots. Embracing that helps you not get so down on yourself because pickleball improvement is a messy proposition.

In the riff we talk about why folks give advice about pickleball and why perhaps they are so adamant about the correctness of the advice that they're giving.

  • Managing Your Negative Self-Talk | Special Episode with CJ Johnson

How you think is how you will perform, whether you are an athlete or not. And as human beings, it's so much easier to say and believe something that's negative vs something that's positive.

As always, thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement. If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.

I've been mulling over the idea of self-talk for the past few weeks, specifically the impact of our self-talk on our performance on the pickleball courts. Positive self talk is key to success in any sport.

Unfortunately, most of our internal self-talk is negative.

What can we do when it happens to us out on the pickleball court? The first step is to recognize our negative self-talk.

Listen to this episode as I share with you a case scenario of the Ryder Cup, what we can put in place when negative talk happens and also give you examples of negative self-talk that destroy our confidence.

Don't should or could on yourself!

  • The Best from our Archives Part 4 - Winning is a Bowl of Ice Cream | PLUS Focusing on those Pivot Points

Our most popular episode! A new look at what “winning” means in pickleball and how this re-framing can improve your relationship with pickleball. Share the “bowl of ice cream” metaphor with your friends.

Are you winning? In this episode we suggest you may already be winning. Improve your results as well as your relationship with pickleball by eating some more ice cream. What could be better?

In the riff, I share some thoughts about pivot points. These are the points that change a game. Are you hunkering down when they are yours? Hunkering down when the other team is looking to capitalize on theirs?

  • The Best from our Archives Part 3 - Forget the Score | PLUS There is more to Pickleball than Shots

Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement. If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.

Focusing on the score can distract you from obtaining the best results for your game. Focus instead on the next rally or, better yet, the next shot. The results - the score - will come.

In the riff, I share some thoughts about the multiple facets of pickleball - there is more than just the third shot.

  • The Best from our Archives Part 2 - Play to your strengths (and work on your weaknesses)

Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement. If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.

Maximize your advantages and minimize your disadvantages. Then take time to work on your disadvantages during drilling and practice.

When you play keep in mind that there are benefits you are receiving that well exceed the score of the last game.

Maintain perspective and you will increase your enjoyment of the game.

This is a rebroadcast of our Episode 4 from way back. There is a lot going on in this episode - use it for a holistic approach to your improvement and play.

  • The Best from our Archives - How to use fundamentals to play your best PLUS the 80-10-10 Rule

Fundamentals & consistency are what win pickleball games. You don’t need a double topspin reverse shot with a pike finish to win in our sport. This Episode 2 rebroadcast is more important than ever!

Also learn about the 80-10-10 rule in Tony's weekly riff.

This is a rebroadcast of our Episode 2 from way back. The message is more important than ever with the increasing noise players are subjected to on the courts and in videos.

  • Special Episode - PPA Head Statistician Jim Ramsey - The Hard Numbers

Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement. If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.

In this special episode we had the pleasure to host Jim Ramsey, the statistician at the PPA (Professional Pickleball Association). Jim's a fan of numbers because he spends a lot of time analyzing them.

He shares with us what he's doing with the statistician role at PPA, how he is studying matches and how we can start using data to help our game because numbers don't lie.

As a recreational player, one of the things Jim enjoy doing is seeing what are some of the statistics that he can get from the pro game to better his own game and help other recreational players.

We discuss the four metric- your serve, your return, the third, and the fourth. Getting the foundation of those first four shots as rock solid as you can to open up your options.

Listen to this episode to learn much more including Jim's take on enforced errors!

  • Check Yourself with the Long Lens

Thanks for joining us on Pickleball Therapy - the podcast dedicated to your pickleball improvement. If you have not yet subscribed to the podcast ... wait what?? you haven't subscribed? ... you know what to do.

It's really important to make sure we're using that long lens as we move through our Pickleball journey, instead of the short lens, to check ourselves and our progress. The long lens helps you with the big picture, understand where you are along your path, and help you avoid potential frustrations as you are moving forward.

How do we use the long lens? What can we do?

In this episode I explain to you how you use the long lens as well as the limitation that you have when you're the one evaluating yourself.

The word of the week this week is GROWTH. It is natural to want to grow and growing as a pickleball player means a lot more than just winning.

During the riff, I am going to switch it to the short lens because there's a place for the short lens and a place for the long lens.
