Lyra grew up in rural Belize, later lived in Washington, D.C. We also talk about blended families and co-parenting, passport privilege and the hurdles Belizeans face traveling to the United States, drug trafficking and gangs, political corruption, feminism and traditional gender roles, and Belize’s deeply homosocial culture—where men and women often socialize separately and even friendships across genders can be viewed through a sexual lens.
