Welcome back to the 5-part Performance Base Layer Series on the Purple Patch Podcast. This series aims to emphasize the importance of the foundational aspect of high performance, which is the performance base layer. It's built on the foundation of positive habits that foster a strong physiological readiness for good physical and mental health year-round and for years to come. The Purple Patch pillars of performance, which include endurance, strength, nutrition, and recovery, make up the core elements of the performance base layer.

Each week of the series, we have focused on a different pillar of performance. We started with endurance and movement, followed by strength and resistance training. Now, we move on to the third pillar: nutrition. Similar to the previous episodes, we will discuss this pillar from two perspectives. The first perspective is called "life performance," which focuses on anyone who seeks to improve their longevity, workplace performance, parenting skills, or anything related to their daily lives. The second perspective focuses on endurance athletes and highlights the specific needs and demands of seeking a podium finish.

In this episode, Matt shares insights on developing a well-rounded approach to nutrition to help maintain health, get battle-ready, improve resilience and adaptability, and ultimately leave you poised for long-term success in any arena.

Throughout this episode, we will use case studies and examples to highlight the importance of adopting healthy nutrition habits. We will also provide resources to assist you in your journey to better nutrition and developing your performance base layer.

Welcome to Part 2 of our 5-part Performance Base Layer Series on the Purple Patch Podcast.

A solid foundation of physical and mental health - a strong Physiological ready-state - is essential to succeed in any arena, whether at work, as a parent, or as an athlete. This is what we call your performance base layer. Over the next few weeks, we will showcase important episodes, each focusing on one key element of the Performance Base Layer.

In our previous episode, we talked about the importance of endurance. In this episode, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon emphasizes the significance of strength training and explains how to incorporate it correctly into your routine. Matt sheds light on common misconceptions about strength training and the mistakes many athletes make when adding it to their training regimen. He also discusses the numerous benefits of strength training, such as avoiding major illnesses and improving your health span. This includes metabolic health, cardiovascular health, body weight management, bone health, and mental health.

It's important to note, that while we are breaking down each pillar separately, they do not stand alone. To create your performance base layer, you must focus on and adopt habits in each pillar, ensuring they work together to deliver great resiliency. It's important to give equal attention to endurance (or movement), strength, nutrition & hydration habits, and recovery & sleep, to unlock your full performance potential. Remember, just because you're fit doesn't mean you're high-performing.

This week on the Purple Patch Podcast, we kick off our new 5-part Performance Base Layer Series.

The purpose of this series is to emphasize the significance and value of establishing a solid physical ready state as the foundation for delivering consistent and predictable high performance in any field.

Over the next few weeks, we will be showcasing important episodes, each focusing on one key element of the Performance Base Layer. It is crucial to comprehend and incorporate each of these elements to improve performance and excel in any arena.

In the first episode of the series, Ironman Master Coach Matt Dixon provides a comprehensive overview of the PurplePatch Pillars of Performance. He starts with Endurance, or Movement for those not necessarily pursuing podiums.

A few weeks ago, we aired a series of shows discussing the significance of the off-season period for athletes and fitness enthusiasts. We shared our innovative approach to off-season training and education, which is aimed at creating a strong foundation for future success.

This week's episode of the Purple Patch Podcast is a flashback to last year's lead-up to the Hawaii Ironman World Championship in Kona.

We decided to rewind to episode 234 and its wealth of information about the legendary event. Whether you've qualified for this year's IRONMAN World Championship, are a male athlete preparing for the 2024 Hawaii Ironman, or have aspirations to compete in Kona in the future, the insights shared by Matt in this episode are extremely valuable.

In this episode of the Purple Patch Podcast, Matt draws from his 15 years of experience helping athletes thrive at the Hawaii Ironman World Championships and provides a breakdown of the preparation, training, and logistical elements you need to consider before ever setting foot on the island.

Purple Patch has guided more than 750 athletes to qualification at the World Championships, has coached multiple age group world champions, and has had numerous purple patch pros in the top 10 overall, including athletes such as Chris Lieto, Rachel Joyce, and Sarah Piampiano.

Matt takes the lessons he has learned from coaching these athletes and shares a detailed walkthrough of what you can expect in Kona, from landing to leaving.

In part two you will learn:

• Strategies around success in Kona - race day mindset and execution

(38:10) "if you want your best race performance, the truth is that it's never going to come from you chasing splits. Having predetermined ideas of what you want to swim, what you want to bike, and what you run or run and trying to adhere a race plan to that is a fool's errand. Instead, success is going to come about through an element of control, really smart self-management, a great amount of persistence, and continued problem solving over all of the challenges that you will meet across the whole of the day."

Welcome to the final installment of our three-part series on the off-season, in which we frame the approach to building a foundation of performance, developing skills, and improving technique.

And in fact, I would say it is the highest predictor of creating a wonderful performance breakthrough no matter what your goal is in the months ahead. It's easier. You have more capacity. We continue our three-part series on the off-season, in which we frame the approach to building a foundation of performance, developing skills, and improving technique.

In part 2 of our series, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon discusses his reimagined approach to the off-season and lays out a blueprint for leveraging the months between Q4 and Q1 in a smart and balanced way.

Matt shares key principles and approaches you can leverage this off-season to improve your swim stroke, terrain management on the bike, balance on the run, and more while emerging faster, stronger, and injury-free.

He lays out the various methods and resources that form the basis of Purple Patch programming, coaching, community, and education, with the goal of helping athletes achieve their best year of racing while integrating sport into their busy lives.

The challenge, of course, is that really focusing on technique and skill acquisition is almost impossible when you're equally training hard, you're in that environment. It's a hard session. You don't have the willpower, focus, and attention to really think about your posture, your form, your skill acquisition, etc. And it becomes even tougher when you've got a looming deadline for a race. When that comes up, all bets are off. All you have hope for is to retain what is already habitual. And that's why these coming months are your golden platform of opportunity. Because you have no deadlines. You have much lower stress training demands, and therefore you have the capacity to focus on your HOW.

Although Matt discusses the approach from a triathlete's perspective (swim, bike, run, strength, and habits), the principles and techniques he covers apply to all endurance athletes and fitness enthusiasts.
