Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is mother to four children: Charles, Prince of Wales Anne, Princess Royal Prince Andrew, Duke of York Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex The famously stoic monarch is unsurprisingly not a warm and affectionate mother. As the children grew up so did the media. Tabloids and television demanded more insight into the lives of the royal family than ever before. The mystical reverence for monarchy was lost and the Queen’s children became real-life soap stars as the press hungrily followed their every triumph and tragedy. The privileged princes and princess were expected to be charming yet accessible and to exemplify a perfect family life. Standards that, through divorce and scandal proved impossible to live up to.
