Soon after I played last week’s “mystery record” several sharp-eared listeners wrote in to let me know the name of the tune that started off last week’s show. Unfortunately, we still don’t know the identity of the band, but research continues. The “mystery record” was an instrumental version, but we start off this week’s show with a vocal version of the song. Tune in to find out what the song is and all about the history of the song, and the life of the composer and lyricist. We’re also going to hit the trail, celebrate the birthdays of Al Stillman and Gone With The Wind, and get ready for the upcoming holiday. If you enjoy the show, please let us know by leaving a comment on the website or the Facebook page or sending an email to [email protected]. Welcome to Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78RPM records of the 1920s and’30s.
This week’s edition of the show starts off with a very unusual record and a mystery I’m hoping some listener can help with. Last weekend I found a 12″ Columbia electrical 78 with a completely blank label on both sides of the record! It’s in E condition and I transferred it and play both sides in the first segment of the show. The first side is an instrumental and I don’t recognize the tune, but I’m hoping someone out there will not only know the tune, but also the orchestra. The second side is a vocal of a popular World War I song, but again, the orchestra is not shown on the label. In the second segment, we’ll reluctantly get up out of bed. Henry Creamer and Louis Alter both get birthday tributes and we’ll spend some time down by the river. If you enjoy the show, please let us know by leaving a comment on the website or the Facebook page or sending an email to [email protected]. Segment 2: Get Up!
I Gotta Get Up And Go To Work – Irving Aaronsons and His Commanders / Dick Robertson, v.

You Can’t Shush Katie – Eva Taylor w/Clarence Williams’ Blue Five
Down By The River – Lew Stone and His Band / Alan Kane, v.
Segment 5: Louis Alter
Blue Shadows – Johnny Hamp’s Kentucky Serenaders / Frank Munn, v.

“I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken!” We do like to be accurate with the information we include along with the music on this show so this week’s edition of Rapidly Rotating Records starts off with corrections to several things I said on last week’s show. With that out of the way, we move on by taking a stroll. We’ll then celebrate the birthdays of Charles Kaley and the state of Arkansas and finish up with another episode of “One Thing in Common.” The four songs in the final segment of the show seemingly have nothing whatsoever to do with each other, but yet they have one thing in common. Don’t spend a lot of energy trying to figure out what it is, just enjoy the music because I’ll let you in on the common denominator at the end of the set. If you enjoy the show, please let us know by leaving a comment on the website or the Facebook page or sending an email to [email protected]. The past few weeks we’ve had first time birthday salutes for several composers and artists and this week we have not one, not two, but three more! Starting off the show is Joseph A. Goodwin, remembered primarily for “When You’re Smiling.” You’ll also hear about Charles Dornberger and John Howard Payne. We’re also going to get close. Closer. And even just a little closer. In the final, one record segment we will hopefully fulfill a request with the correct recording, which we went to great lengths to come up with. This week’s show, like last week, is also in four segments instead of the usual five. The past few weeks we’ve had first time birthday salutes for several composers and artists and this week we start off the show with another, that of Reginald Foresythe. We’ll also share what came in the mail the other day from Rivermont Records. The third segment of the show is “Bitter Sweet.” And you’ve probably heard it said that “life ain’t fair.” Regardless of whether that’s true or not, in the last segment of the show we’ll have some rapidly rotating records having to do with fairness. Usually, the show consists of five segments of three or four songs each. This week, for no particular reason, there are four segments of four songs each. They say it takes all kinds, so we’ll have a segment about different kinds of girls and one about different kinds of men. Montague Ewing and Sherman Myers both get their first birthday salute this week and we’ll try to take some things off of some other things. (It will make more sense when you listen to the show.) Last week I had to go to court to answer a summons for jury service. Although I was eventually dismissed without being empaneled, it involved a lot of sitting around and waiting. Since misery loves company, for the second segment of the show, you can join me in court. In the first segment of the show we’ll hear some songs about “that man.” I don’t know who “that man” is, but we’ll hear some songs about him! In the third segment we’ll build up some speed and in the fourth we’ll go streaking! In the final segment we’ll hear from Billy Murray and Walter Scanlan on a “special” record. This week’s edition of the show starts off with another episode of “One Thing In Common” where you try to guess what the four records in the set have in common. We’re also going to track our mileage, but of course your mileage may vary! Like Cinderella, we’re going to the ball–not just one, but three of them, as a matter of fact. We have no regrets about having some regrets and we’ll hear some words of wisdom about Mother’s Day from my wife’s distant relative, Will Rogers. (Her unmarried name is Adair and his real name is William Penn Adair.) If you enjoy the show, please let us know by leaving a comment on the website or the Facebook page or sending an email to [email protected]. And remember, your requests and topic segments are always welcome. As always, just click on the link below to instantly listen streaming online and/or download the show.
Enjoy the show!
