  • You Don’t Have to Prove Your Worth - You Are Enough

It's not necessary to prove your worth to anyone, even yourself. Your worthiness is baked into who you are, you just have to accept it & believe it. But it can be difficult to know what behaviors to let go of, so I created a list to help!

    Show Notes:

Self-worth is a tricky thing. It can easily be mistaken for self-esteem, which is more based on the confidence you have in your abilities, successes & achievements. Self-worth is the internal sense of knowing you are enough as you are to be accepted, to be loved, to be respected, to be anything. You don’t have to go out of your way to show you’re worthy because you already are. The reason people get all caught up in struggling with their self-worth is that it depends on you believing that you’re worthy & that you deserve certain things & being treated a certain way. The problem is that you could also decide to believe the opposite, which is where people end up having low self-worth.

And deciding to believe we are not worthy can happen for a number of reasons. We can believe the opinions & judgments from others & have those contribute to how we feel about ourselves. We can also not give ourselves grace when bad things happens, when we experience mistakes & failures and decide we are terrible people that won’t amount to anything, letting this determine our self-worth. Those of us that struggle with people pleasing have trouble with their self-worth because everything they do depends on how other people see them, treat them & allow them to be a part of their lives.

If you want a jumpstart way to increase your self-worth, start by pulling back on your self-criticism. There are enough people around you, probably that are coming down on you, don’t add to the trouble.

But let’s chat about how you do not have to prove yourself to others & some ways you may be trying to do that when you no longer need to. Here are 5 things you need to stop doing because you don’t have to prove yourself to anyone:

    1. Always helping everyone else but yourself
    2. Not asking for help from others
    3. Enduring emotional & physical pain from others
    4. Needing to always be right
    5. Compromising your morals & values

  • Progress Over Perfection - How to Focus On Your Progress & Keep Going

If you focus on progress instead of perfection, you will see how capable you are at getting closer to accomplishing your goals, rather than allowing perfectionism convince you there is only one way to get there & only the end matters.  Here are 5 tips on how to focus on your progress, rather than trying to be perfect.

    Show Notes:
Believe me, I do not like it when things don’t go the way I planned. I am the ultimate planner & have issues with too many changes happening, people getting in my way of what I have planned because I have the toxic trait of believing I am right a lot of time & want everything to be perfect. And sadly, that means that if something didn’t turn out perfectly, it meant nothing to me.  It was perfection or nothing.

I’m being completely honest with you about all these things I struggle with & am working through because I want you to know you are not alone. I use to be so much more bothered by things not going perfectly or not being seen as perfect by others. But thankfully the growth I have been doing is eliminating that behavior little by little. And I don’t expect that to fully go away ever, to be honest.

When we work on behaviors & mindsets in our lives, we need to accept that it might be something we struggle with the rest of our lives, it’s just a matter of how much & if we can work hard enough to make it the bare minimum. But it’s nothing to be ashamed of. No one is actually perfect, people are just out here pretending to be. I promise you.

So let’s talk about what it means to focus on progress over perfection. When we focus too hard on perfection, we continue to let ourselves down because we are not able to achieve true perfection. We keep thinking if we just do this one thing, if we just get better at this thing or have money for that thing or change this for the 10th time it will finally be perfect. In reality, this isn’t true. We will never be truly perfect. But we are ALWAYS enough.

Focusing on progress will allow you to actually enjoy working towards your goals & it will be a lot easier to motivate yourself to keep going because you’re seeing the milestones you’re hitting as something that matters & is something to be celebrated. When you’re focusing so hard on perfection, you’re only satisfied when you complete it & it turns out the way you wanted it to. Plus, focusing on the progress will allow you to appreciate the new pieces of knowledge you’ve learned, maybe new people that have come into your life & having the opportunity to lean more into gratitude.

Here are 5 ways to stay focused on your progress & not get too caught up in being perfect:

    1. Stop comparing yourself to others.
    2. Mistakes & failures don’t define you but improve you.
    3. Create a plan/road map with flexibility.
    4. Remember how far you have come.
    5. Know when to let go & have a natural ending/transition.

  • How Trauma Shows Up in Our Lives - Traumatic Experiences

You might wonder why you developed a certain behavior or carry a specific reaction to experiences until you consider it being a manifestation of a past trauma. And it doesn't have to be only in your childhood, it can be recent past. Here are some ways trauma can show up in your life.

    Show Notes:
When I was a child, I wished that when you went through something tough & traumatic that it wouldn’t follow you to the next part of your life. I had this desire that emotional baggage wasn’t a thing & we could just leave it behind or forget about it because it shouldn’t affect who we are or how we live our lives in the future. And I don’t think I was far off from how we ideally would like to live our lives.

When we start dealing with our emotional baggage, we DO need to find a way to leave the parts of it that causes us pain, heartache, burden & all the terrible feelings behind us to no longer torment us. Leaving the parts of it that cause you to replay the hurts in your mind are not needed. It’s what you learned from the experience & what to do differently that is important.

But it’s another one that’s easier said than done. Trauma can result from so many different events & experiences. So it’s important to understand that the way someone else has experienced trauma can & most likely will be different than someone else & yourself. And that there is no criteria for what classifies trauma. If it was traumatic for you, then it was traumatic. So just know that your trauma is valid, even if some jerk tells you it isn’t.

And trauma can manifest in many different ways, whether it’s directly after the experience or years later in our life. It just depends how it impacted us & whether or not we have taken the time to heal from these events. Which is why today I am going to talk with you about how it manifests in life.

Here are 5 ways that trauma shows up in our lives:

    1. External Validation Needed
    2. Fixing Others
    3. Tolerating Abusive Behavior
    4. Needing to Prove Yourself
    5. Worried Everything Will Fall Apart

  • How to Be Your Authentic Self - Authenticity is Freedom

I bet the person you're meant to be is more fun than the one you're pretending to be out of fear of judgment & negative opinions. It can be difficult to lean into our authentic selves, but you will feel so much freedom in being your true self. I got 5 tips that can help you be your authentic self!

    Show Notes:
My goal for the last couple years is to be as real as possible. I have been working on becoming my true self & it hasn’t been easy. Pretending to be someone is also considered masking, where you be the person you need to be depending on the people you’re with & the experience you’re going through. It’s like protection because you are adapting to the situation so you can survive in every way.

But just surviving isn’t enough. We all need to be who we were created to be because that is what matters. And I know that being who you truly are is scary because you are fearful of the judgment that comes with it or how uncomfortable rejection is, the amount of loneliness that can come when you stop hanging out with people that aren’t the best influence and the awkwardness of trying to figure out what you actually enjoy & don’t enjoy. But the freedom you get when you ARE your true self is unmatched.

Authenticity is living your life being true to your personality, your personal values & beliefs & just being who you are despite what others think & say. Being authentic also means that you will be as honest & transparent as you can be. And not living your life with a victim mentality.

If you do not resonate with what I am saying right now & think that being a people pleaser IS you being authentic, then I challenge you to ask yourself this question: “How would I feel if I did something for myself that made me happy but made someone else upset?” If your answer is something like you would be really uncomfortable & wouldn’t do based on other people’s judgments, then you aren’t being authentic to yourself.

Here are also some examples of someone that is authentic:

    • They don’t try hard to make other people like them
    • They don’t judge others
    • They express their true thoughts with others
    • They take time to self-reflect & work on themselves

But for those of us that know we are struggling with being authentic & who we were truly meant to be, here are 5 ways you can be more authentic & show up as your truest self:

    1. Be honest with yourself & others.
    2. Work on self-awareness to understand yourself better.
    3. Recognize what motivates you internally vs externally.
    4. Recognize where you don’t have boundaries & create those.
    5. Let go of your emotional crutches.

  • How to Forgive Others - Let Go of Grudges & Unforgiveness

Holding grudges & not forgiving others will only cause us more unnecessary pain, not make you feel empowered or in control of the situation. You are just preventing yourself from moving on & being released from the hurtful experience.

    Show Notes:

Let’s start with talking about what forgiveness is & what it’s not.

Forgiveness is a way to take your power back because by holding tight to the transgression you are giving that person all the power & this mindset controls your emotions. It’s also a choice for you to make. You don’t have to forgive them, but you’ll be better off if you do. You’ll also be taking responsibility for your feelings when you decide to forgive because you are acknowledging that you were hurt or offended or whatever in the experience. Accepting how you feel about the situation will help you heal from it sooner. And the biggest thing forgiveness is, it’s for you, not the person that hurt you. It allows you to move on & not get caught in the pain.

As for things forgiveness is not, it’s not forgetting what happened. You’re just choosing to move on. It’s also not an obligation to stay in a relationship with that person, whether romantic, friendship or otherwise. And forgiveness is not magically going to make you feel better, but it will help you start healing.

There are so many different ways to look at forgiveness & a few standard quotes that accompany these perspectives. My favorite one: “Unforgiveness is like drinking poison, but expecting someone else to die.” Another good one: “Forgiveness is unlocking a door to set someone free & realizing you were the prisoner.” When you choose to hold a grudge & not forgive someone, you hold tight to the bitterness, pain, resentment & negative feelings, which is only doubling down on the pain.

It’s common to hold a grudge if you feel like the person that hurt you doesn’t care how it affected you, if they never admit to the wrongdoing, if you were embarrassed in the experience or you don’t have proper coping mechanisms to move on from negative experiences like this. But whether or not you tend to hold grudges often or not, it’s important to realize this isn’t the way to feel better.

Fixated in your pain, you can’t heal, you can’t learn anything from the experience, you can’t engage in forgiveness.

And if you aren’t sure how to move forward & start to forgive someone, you’re in luck because that’s exactly what I’m going to share with you right now. Here are 7 steps to take when engaging in forgiveness:

    1. Acknowledge how you were hurt.
    2. Accept that you can’t change what happened.
    3. Let go of being correct about whatever happened.
    4. Release the need to punish & control them.
    5. Try on a different perspective.
    6. Decide if you still want a relationship with this person.
    7. Tell them or don’t.

  • What It Looks Like to Grow & Change Emotionally - Proof of Personal Growth

Instead of leaning on external validation & people pointing out that you have grown & changed, it's important to realize that you can recognize it all on your own & celebrate yourself in that proof of growth. Here are 7 ways to know you are growing & changing.

    Show Notes:
When I realize I have changed, I get so excited. Like genuinely, I get so excited that I am making steps in the right direction away from behavior & mindsets that are doing the opposite of serving me, but actually tearing me apart & causing daily pain.

But sometimes it can be difficult to recognize change in ourselves. We don’t know what to look for to identify the change, if it’s not some dramatic change then we can easily miss it or if it’s not big enough for other people to point out, we get all bent out of shape because we aren’t getting the external validation we, unfortunately, live our life on. If you struggle with needing external validation, please listen to episode 367 of the podcast that I recorded earlier this year on how to work through that.

But I also want you to understand that the most important things we are doing in our lives aren't the most impressive things. I heard a quote from Pastor Steven Furtick from Elevation Church that said, “What’s the most important isn’t always the most impressive.” There will be many things we do in our lives, including our emotional work & personal growth that will not be recognized by others. And it doesn’t need to be. What matters is how you feel about it, whether you’ve given it time to work and if it propelling you forward.

But I know it can be so annoying to have people in our lives point out the fact that it doesn’t seem like we are changing at & if the work we are doing even matters. Sometimes I get so annoyed by these comments, but it’s their ignorance in the situation that causes them to respond this way. We need to not care about those comments. They have no idea how much time & effort you are putting into yourself. And entertaining their opinions will only waste time & plant seeds of doubt in yourself. We don’t need that.

We just need to focus on what we doing. That’s what will continue to foster growth in us. If you struggle to know how to identify growth in yourself, you’re in luck because that is exactly what we are going to talk about today.

Here are 7 ways for you to identify personal growth & emotional change in yourself:

    1. You Respond More than React in Heightened Situations
    2. You’ve Started Speaking Up for Yourself & Being Assertive
    3. You’re Able to Ask for & Accept Help from Others
    4. You Are Setting & Enforcing Personal Boundaries
    5. You Allow Yourself to be Vulnerable with Yourself & Others
    6. Mistakes & Failures Don’t Cause as Much Panic
    7. Shifting Your Mindset from Negative to Positive or Neutral Becomes Easier

  • How to Be Happy When Life is Tough - What to Do When Happiness Isn't Easy

Life is not always filled with happy moments, but sometimes we desire to reclaim happiness to just make it through all the crap. I'm here to share some tips on how to create happiness during rough & tough times.

    Show Notes:
Life can kind of really suck at times. It can be really rough & you just don’t know how to make it through. And everyone around you is just telling you to be happy & push through & just suck it up. And while that advice might help the few select people that are able to ignore all negativity in their life, it’s not gonna help the majority of us.

Being happy can actually be hard. I talk a lot about leaning into gratitude when we find it difficult to be positive or see the positives in life because so many things are going wrong or just not the way you want it to, but I know that there are even times when that is difficult for me. You can acknowledge that you have many things to be grateful for in life, but you get stuck in the negativity parading through your mind that it takes a little more effort to find that happiness again.

And this is not something you should feel shameful for, despite the fact that some people try to make you feel that way, it’s perfectly acceptable. Especially if you haven’t adopted positive coping mechanisms to handle negative experiences & things that can be overwhelming or even traumatic. If you struggle with knowing how to shift your mindset when you get caught up in negativity, then of course it’s going to be hard for you to be happy when it feels like the world is burning down around you.

There are several common reasons that we can struggle with happiness in life & I want to share those with you just so you’re aware of what might be holding you back & preventing you from tapping into the joy:

    • Your happiness is dependent on something you can’t control. (this can be people or how much money you have or getting recognition in your life)
    • You compare your life to others.
    • You spend time with people who are overly negative.
    • You are enduring things that don’t make you happy. (friendships, jobs, activities)

All these things & many more can be such huge happiness roadblocks in your life. But if we learn how to navigate the hard moments & seasons in life, we will have the ability to be happy whenever we choose, dependent on our effort to shift our mindset.

Today I want to share with you 7 ways to be happy even when life is tough & sucks:

    1. Don’t be too critical of yourself.
    2. Take moments to slow down & think.
    3. Learn something new.
    4. Widen your perspective & apply gratitude.
    5. Make a list of things you can actually change.
    6. Find something to look forward to each day.
    7. Help someone else.

  • How to Make Decisions - Tackling Indecisiveness & Decision Fatigue

We make decisions every day of our lives & sometimes it's a struggle to get through it. Not to mention the anxiety & overwhelm we can experience in the process. Making decisions can be easier if we have the right mindset & consider what actually important to know about our decision. I have 5 tips on how to make decisions easier.

    Show Notes:
The anxiety of not making a decision is usually what pushes me to make a decision. I don’t want the action held over my head that something needs to be decided, so I will make a decision, but then worry about whether it was a good one or not.

Along with all the things that cause struggles in our lives, having trouble making decisions can cause problems, too. Some of the reasons people have a hard time making decisions is because of the complexity of the decision, the feeling of uncertainty & whether or not you made the right decision, lack of confidence & belief in yourself & decision fatigue.

I know one of the biggest reasons is the fear of failure. You aren’t completely sure how the decision is going to pan out, you don’t know if there will be any consequences, you don’t know if you’ll have to start from scratch again & you might be worried about what other people will think of you if your decision doesn’t work out. It’s very anxiety-driven. This is also where perfectionists have a ton of trouble.

And making decisions is super important in life. We need to make decisions all the time. Small decisions about our day, big decisions that will guide our life, medium decisions that will affect someone else’s life, all the decisions. And you may not struggle with the smaller things, but the big stuff is where you anxiety prevails & it feels like the world stops because you are unable to know what choice to make. Every decision we make will guide our roadmap in life, which can be really scary & overwhelming. And we may crumble under the pressure of having to make these decisions, especially if someone in our life struggles from decision fatigue & refuses to help you make decisions. But I want you to know that I see you & I am here to at least help you with a procedure to make making decisions easier.

Today I want to share with you 5 tips on how to make decisions easier:

    1. Identify the Goal of Your Decision
    2. Get the Details
    3. Find Any Alternatives
    4. Look Beyond the Present
    5. Weigh the Cost of Failure

  • Why Do You Want to Improve? - What is Pushing You to Want to Change?

Have you ever asked yourself WHY you want to change or improve? Do you know if it's for the right reasons or is it for selfish reasons? Are you doing it to impress others or truly benefit yourself? I have some tips on how to lean more into being more authentic when it comes to making changes in your life.

    Show Notes:
I think I reinvented myself like 5 times in my life, so far.  I think I am about to hit my 6th major change in life & it feels better than all those other changes. The shift I am going through right now feels like I am finally stepping into the true me.

If you haven’t experienced that yet, I PROMISE you it’s coming. I don’t know when & don’t really have any signs I can give you that you’ll know it’s coming, except that it will feel SO FREEING.

I know I have been talking about natural shifts that happen in our lives that cause us to become different people based on the experience we are going through, but we also become different people when we want to change. And that’s the one I am going through right now.

I wanted this change, I wanted to let go of what was holding me back from being my true self. And I had hoped that this change would come sooner than it did, but it didn’t because initially, I was going about it for all the wrong reasons.

I wanted to impress people, I wanted other people to envy me, I wanted respect & others to look up to me. All these really selfish things. Looking back on it, I was really looking for validation in all the wrong places. It wasn’t until I realized I had to validate myself & do things because I truly wanted to do them & not for any gain from others that I was able to find my way on the path of becoming freely me. There were still bumps in the road, of course, but it got easier the more I let go of how I looked to others.

I still struggle with it. I’m sure I will always struggle with it a little bit because it’s so ingrained in me, but I know how to shift my mindset now so I don’t get stuck. I think that’s one of the best things to understand when we are making efforts to become our true, authentic selves & our best selves. We need to remember that just because we do all this work doesn’t mean we are going to be magically healed. We will still struggle here & there. But because we have done all this work, we will no longer get stuck in those mindsets.

I’m sure you’re asking what tips I can give you that relate to any of this. And 2 tips I can give you on shifting into the person you’re truly meant to be is patience & perseverance.

But today I actually wanted to share with you 5 things you should actually focus on when you want to change for the better:

    1. See Yourself as a Work in Progress
    2. Identify the Resistance in Your Life
    3. Identify What You Want to Change & the Associated Habits
    4. Find a Way to Reflect Back to Observe Your Progress
    5. Take Action to Build Courage

  • How to Choose the Right Support People for You - Finding Friends You Can Count On

Having people in your life you can trust to share your vulnerable stuff with is really important.  But sometimes we jump to trusting people too soon or don't trust at all because we don't know how to know it's safe. Here are 5 tips on how to select the right support person for you.

    Show Notes:
It was always hard for me to find people I could trust with all my vulnerable stuff. Growing up, I never told anyone what was really going in my life, I just hid it all & dealt with it on my own. But I don’t believe that is how we should have to live life. We should be able to find the right people to confide in & feel supported by. Even if that means we don’t start until we are adults, like me. At least we made it & can help teach others younger than us.

It’s important to have people we can lean on because we need the people that will lift us up when we don’t think we will make it. We need the people that will give us a quick word of encouragement or some hard truth when times are difficult. We also need the people that won’t let us give up & will help come up with a new plan, a new way to get to where we need to go.

If you’re currently someone’s support person, I wanted to throw out a few great ways you can support someone, in case you needed some fresh ideas:

    1. Take something off their plate
    2. Resist the urge to offer unsolicited advice
    3. Speak highly of them in front of other people/show appreciation
    4. Go with them to experience hard things (if they want it)
    5. Don’t overly talk about yourself & give examples of your own life

And it doesn’t have to be a gaggle of people you need in your life. Even if it’s just one person, that’s great. For me, it’s my husband & my therapist. And this can be friends, family or someone outside these groups. Sometimes I talk with another friend of mine, but only about certain things. Which is okay, too, if you talk with certain people about certain things & not others. It’s all about trust.

But when there isn’t trust, it’s devastating. Sometimes you think you can trust them & it turns out you can’t. Or you fear trusting anyone because you fear it not working out because of past experiences.

This is why I wanted to chat about how to choose the right people to seek support from in your life. This might be people you already know or people you don’t know yet but will become friends with & will have these tips to determine if they can be your support people or not. Here are 5 great tips on How to Choose the Right Support People for You:

    1. Determine the type of person you’d actually enjoy being around
    2. Find someone that demonstrates integrity to you
    3. They also need to be a caring person
    4. Find someone that isn’t negative about everything in their own life
    5. Be patient
