  • It's Okay to Have Bad Days - Struggling & Surviving

Why are we all trying to hide the fact that we have bad days? Everyone experiences bad days & there shouldn't be any shame in that. Let's stop shaming others for not having their whole lives be perfect all the time.  I have 4 big reasons why having a bad day is totally acceptable.

    Show Notes:

When you have a bad day, it doesn’t matter what happened or who was involved, it just matters that you felt like it was not a good day. And that’s important because we need to keep an eye on how many days we feel we are struggling vs how many are going well or good enough. I’m fine if a majority of my days were good enough because I made it through without slowly slipping down into a spiral of mental chaos.

But not allowing yourself to slip down into that mental chaos, that pit of despair, anything adjacent to victim mentality is the best thing you can do. Because it’s really easy to let it happen. You can easily allow whatever bad things happened that day take over all the space in your mind & not allow you to still see the good things that happened. Ask yourself how much better your day would be if you decided to make highlighting the good things in your day (even if it’s fewer than the bad things) as important as it is to talk a lot about the bad things.

The hard & tough things stand out to us & seem more fun to share than the good things, the positive things.  Having a captive audience for all the good things that happened to you today feels less likely. Another reason it’s easier to share the negatives instead of the positives is that it allows you to relate with others easier. Whereas, sharing the positives & everything going well for you can feel like bragging, self-absorbed or non-inclusive to others because they may not be having the same experiences in their life.

Just because you have a bad day doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. Or bad at what you do. It just means that things didn’t work out. And that’s ok because not everything is going to work out. I would even go so far to say that not everything is supposed to work out. We make plans & think we thought it all the way through, but we often miss things or it just wasn’t meant to be, so it doesn’t work out. But whether you come to that conclusion or not, it’s still ok to have bad days.

Let me share with you 4 reasons why it’s acceptable to have bad days:

    1. Bad Days Give You a Chance to Check-In With Yourself (honor your feelings, figure out if something triggered you, figure out what & why something bothered you, learn to sit with your negative emotions)
    2. You Appreciate Your Good Moments More (once you start becoming more self-aware you can push yourself to appreciate your good days when you have these)
    3. You Learn Positive Coping Mechanisms (this would be ways to support yourself & get out of your funk when it’s time, ways to not obsess over what did or didn’t happen, do something you enjoy like taking a bath, working out, reading, puzzles, time with pets, calling a friend, cleaning, ect.)
    4. No One is Perfect & Can Have All Good Days (but you’ll see what you can get through & that tells you more about yourself than pretending to be perfect & manage it all)

  • Struggling Doesn't Mean You're Failing - Keep Going

Struggling isn't failing because by not giving up on your struggle & not allowing it to hold you captive you are actually succeeding. I have 4 reasons why struggling isn't failing.

    Show Notes:
Do you ever feel like you aren’t succeeding the same way others are? Or maybe you’ve been going through so much crap & problems lately that it feels like all you’re doing is struggling. When we are feeling like we aren’t succeeding and others are getting further ahead in life it can cause us to question how well we are doing. That darn comparison obsession.

When you’re going through struggles it can feel like you’re failing. It can feel like you’re never given enough time to recover. It can feel like you’re the only one going through this experience, too. Struggles can feel so isolating. You’re dealing with feeling overwhelmed, trying to come up with the best problem-solving solution & keep everything else in your life together. It’s just a lot.

Meanwhile, people are out here telling you that the other side of your struggle is the place you want to be and to keep going. Which sounds nice, but isn’t always the most helpful thing you can hear in these moments. To be honest, there really isn’t too much that can be said while you are knee-deep in the struggle that will make it magically better. Motivational phrases here and there, genuine people coming to the rescue when you need support and having the ability to take mental and physical breaks can be great helps, but it’s still just all up to you.

And I do need to mention that failing is not a terrible thing. It can feel terrible in the moment because what you wanted to happen didn’t happen and this means more time spent and effort put out in the long run, which isn’t fun. But failing isn’t the end of the world because there is so much you learn while failing. There is so much opportunity for growth and change and shifting your perspective. And if you continue to avoid failure in your life, you’ll never discover new things about who you are and what you are capable of doing because you aren’t pushing yourself beyond your perceived means. It’s worth it if you’re willing to fall down a bit.

Today I want to talk to you about how going through struggles doesn’t mean you’re failing. It can certainly feel like you’re failing because what you’re going through isn’t getting any better and sometimes more problems end up piling on top of what you’re already dealing with and again, it’s just too much.

But you’re not failing. If anything, you’re succeeding to the most because you’ve decided that not giving up isn’t an option. You’ve decided that you need to keep going and not let your struggles control you and dictate your future. But persevering and making that mental shift from “this is too hard” to “this isn’t too hard for me to get through,” is the key.

Here are 4 reasons why struggling isn’t failing:

    1. You’re Actually Trying
    2. It’s Just Taking Longer for Your Results
    3. Success Doesn’t Come Without Setbacks (luck is short-lived)
    4. You’re Growing Through this Struggle

  • How to Take Breaks & End Toxic Friendships & Relationships

Not all relationships last forever. Some for a season, fewer for a lifetime.
Sometimes you have to take a break to come back stronger or just end it for your better health.

    Show Notes:
I didn’t really understand until I was a young adult in college that relationships, platonic or romantic, didn’t have to last forever. Even family ones.

Honestly, this was really good for me to discover because while I was in college, I needed to put some space between my father & me.  There are times in our lives when we can just become overwhelmed with the differences of opinions, hurt feelings, miscommunications, all the things. And rather than continue to verbally abuse each other or sometimes physically (hopefully not), taking a break can be a better option.

However, I do want to mention that there might be times when you have already tried to take breaks from one another, maybe several times, but nothing changes. This might mean that you need to end the relationship.  Sometimes you're no longer willing to pay the cost to be in that relationship.

Many relationships have an expiration date. Some are only meant to last for a season & others can last a lifetime. Relationships take work from both sides. There will not be perfect balance all the time or even often, but it needs to go back & forth between both people.  When that doesn’t happen, it can become too much and you have to make the choice to endure or move forward.

Here are some red flags for when it might be better for you to end a relationship:

    • They betray your trust
    • They are more often negative & have a victim mentality
    • There seems to be drama with & around them too often
    • They don’t seem to listen to you or care when you need support
    • They don’t respect your boundaries

Sometimes trauma or abuse that happens in a relationship causes you to instill a break or an ending. These will be moments where you need to decide what is best for you & what needs to happen for you to endure as little pain as possible & no abuse. My suggestion to you is that if you are being abused, that should be an immediate end of the relationship. Trauma is tougher because being around those that were present during your trauma experience can be triggering for you. Which could lead to you taking a break from those relationships or even having to end those if it’s just too much hurt.

Today I want to share with you some tips on How to Take a Break or End Friendships & Relationships:

    1. Really Think Through the Reasons Why You Want to Take a Break or End the Relationship.
    2. Don’t Ghost Them, Have the Conversation Out of Respect.
    3. Don’t Come to Someone in Anger or Reflect Their Anger in the Moment.
    4. Don’t Play the Blame Game & Only Speak How YOU Feel.
    5. Share Your Boundaries With Them to Know for the Future.
    6. Make Plans to See Each Other in the Future.
    7. Forgive Them.

  • Doing the Work - Tips on How to Heal Emotionally & Become Stronger

Talking about 'Doing the Work' sounds great, but do we actually know what that means? I'm here to share with you some tips on how we can 'Do the Work' emotionally & engage in some self-healing to become our best selves.

    Show Notes:
Emotional healing is a ton of work. It’s exhausting, overwhelming & sometimes painful because you bring up old wounds & have to face people & situations that have hurt you before and you fear now. It’s a lot of work, but it’s so worth going through.

Of course, it doesn’t feel fun or worth it while it’s happening, which is why you have to have hope for what your future looks like once you slog through some of it. And it doesn’t usually take long to see some growth & relief & burden release if you commit to doing the work. It also takes perseverance & determination that you want your life to change for the better & you’re willing to put in the effort to do so.

A lot of times we want things to change, but we don’t want to do the work. We just want the change to happen without having to feel uncomfortable. And that would be nice if that were the way it worked. But it doesn’t. Not only do we need to make the decision to change, but we need to put action behind that decision. That is where doing the work comes in.

‘Doing the work’ is this phrase that I feel is easily thrown around with people within the wellness world. And despite how important I think doing the work is, I think this phrase is a little ambiguous on what that even means. It sounds good to say, but it doesn’t really say much or what needs to happen.

Basically, doing the work means you are putting in the time and effort to do self-healing & improve who you are. You are making an effort to understand yourself better, self-awareness at its best, and make changes that will help you heal & become your best self.

That brings me to what I want to talk about today, tips for How to Do the Work & Heal Emotionally:

    1. Examining your beliefs & values.
    2. Deal with unhealed trauma & pain.
    3. Start setting & enforcing personal boundaries.
    4. Understand what gives & takes away your energy.
    5. Honoring your feelings.

  • How to Accept a Compliment - Self-Worth Issues

We don't think we are worthy of kindness & praise from others, so declining compliments is a natural response. But this only perpetuates the negative views we have of ourselves & insults those giving us compliments. I have 5 tips on how to better accept compliments.

    Show Notes:

Maybe this is the same with you, but I tend to go into deflection mode when given a compliment. Someone will say something really nice & I will immediately find a way to deflect it. I will be like, “Oh, it’s because of so and so.” “It’s no big deal.” “Oh. (silence)” It’s really embarrassing, actually. And the few times I have given a better response & actually received the compliment, I feel so weird afterward.

And this is actually common with people that have a hard time accepting compliments. And it can be for a number of reasons, like social anxiety, low self-esteem & low self-worth. It can also be because you don’t want to feel full of yourself or conceited by confirming the compliment. But I think one of the most notable reasons we struggle to accept compliments is due to our low self-esteem. The way we see ourselves also doesn’t align with how the people who compliment us see us. We don’t see ourselves as worthy enough of receiving any type of positive words or praise.

Let’s also consider the different ways we respond to compliments when it happens. Many people will deflect the compliment, like I mentioned before, by drawing attention to something else, away from yourself. You could also respond by insulting yourself, which would be saying that what you’re wearing is terrible or you’re not that good at what you did. Next possibility is denying the compliment altogether by saying that you didn’t do what they are complimenting you for. But my favorite one, which I sometimes lean into, is asking for reassurance in whatever they complimented you on. This would be like someone telling you your presentation was fantastic & you responding with asking them if they really felt that way & how you felt like it fell apart completely.

Regardless how you respond to a compliment, if you aren’t finding a gracious way to accept it, then you’re doing it wrong. I completely understand that you may struggle with this because of how you feel about yourself, but by not accepting the compliment, you are insulting the person that gave it. You are throwing away the kindness & generosity of the person that took time out of their day to say something they probably thought would lift you up. And this may not be as important to you, but by disregarding a compliment, you also present as someone who isn’t confident in themself.

This all brings me to what I want to share with you today, How to Accept A Compliment.

    1. Say a Simple ‘Thank You’
    2. Don’t Diminish Yourself By Giving Them a Bigger Compliment
    3. Remember It’s Ok to Be Good At Things
    4. Practice Accepting Compliments By Giving Yourself Compliments
    5. Do Not Downplay Compliments (It’s not a big deal or it was nothing)

  • Things That Affect Your Depression - Triggers

We all develop depression for a different reason, but many of the day-to-day things that make it worse & trigger it are common ground that a lot of us deal with. I'm here to share 7 things that negatively affect our depression that is helpful to be aware of to help develop needed coping mechanisms.

    Show Notes:
I struggle with depression. I’m sure I have been struggling with it longer than I realized, but I started to realize it when I was in college. I don’t struggle as much as I used to because of my investment & time in talk therapy, my own self-help journey of reading books, finding helpful content online & discovering what works best for me in terms of medicine, which turned out to be something more natural.

And I know there are many other people that listen here that are struggling with depression. It’s a tough journey, feels like a roller coaster some of the time & can be confusing if you don’t know what is affecting it & possibly contributing to more pain than normal.

A while back, a listener asked me to talk about triggers for depression because I created an episode talking about triggers for anxiety. And I was hesitant to do so because diving into the inner workings of depression is a much deeper well than anxiety. And depression starts from so many more places. But I decided that it was important enough for someone to ask me to talk about it & I finally found a way that I feel will be helpful, will do it justice & doesn’t involve me talking about how depression comes about.

Today I want to talk to you about the things in life that can affect depression. Like I mentioned, depression can begin in our lives due to so many different experiences, but there is some common ground in what can affect it in a day-to-day kind of way. So I’m going to share with you what affects depression negatively, which can also be seen as a trigger:

    1. Trauma & Stressful Events
    2. Rejection & Failures
    3. Negative Thought Patterns (if you get stuck in your thoughts, continue to believe negative thoughts without examining if there is any truth in what you’re thinking .)
    4. Lack of Sleep (clinical studies have shown that less than 6 hours increases the risk of depression. Majority of depressed people have insomnia which creates a cyclical effect for this & some sleep excessively.)
    5. Illness (it’s a heavy burden to carry when you have an illness that takes so much from you or you don’t even realize you have any issues that are causing you internal sickness that is also contributing to depression)
    6. Seasonal Changes (SAD is usually worse during the fall & winter because there is less sunlight. )
    7. Relationship Issues (break-ups, arguments, separations, power issues, abuse)

The best way for you to become aware of what triggers you is to develop self-awareness & keep track of what affects your depression, what causes you to feel worse & feel better. Actually, keep track of those things somewhere & see what the correlations are.

  • What Are You Avoiding? - How to Face What Overwhelms You, Scares You & Brings Pain

Avoiding only increases the anxiety & pain related to what you're putting off. It also limits your life & prevents growth. Come learn 5 tips to stop avoiding & starting dealing with discomfort.

    Show Notes:
As we all know, we can only avoid things/people for so long. I mean, SOMETIMES we can avoid certain people forever, but it’s not ideal since there are emotions & experiences tied to that interaction that could help us grow & understand ourselves better.

Avoidance behavior is when someone escapes from having to deal with difficult feelings, experiences, people, conversations, basically, anything that you aren’t ready to handle in the moment or maybe not any time soon. A lot of this is rooted in fear & not knowing how it’s going to turn out or if it will work out the way you hope or need it to. And while sometimes it’s ok to put something off, this can become a real problem if we are doing it all the time. Its also considered a negative coping mechanism.

Avoiding will really limit what you can do in life because you keep creating boundaries that you won’t cross. And while it will feel nice for a while to not have to do the thing, anxiety could actually become a problem for you because of impending doom. And yes, it can be helpful in the moment for those that struggle with anxiety or panic to avoid certain things, but if you continue to put it off, the symptoms just become worse.

One of the biggest things we are missing out on with avoidant behavior is the ability to tolerate discomfort. The more we have to do things we don’t want to do, the easier it becomes to get those things done when we make the effort to face those things. We are always going to experience discomfort in our lives, so learning to tolerate it is better than avoiding it until it blows up on us.

We are also missing out on learning to problem-solve better or just learn new skills sooner than being forced to. Problem-solving is an underrated skill. If you are able to problem solve most things in your life, you move forward quicker with more ease & less anxiety. It’s because when you problem solve something & come to a solution, you feel confident because you figured it out. And continuing to do this builds confidence & dampens the fear & worry that whatever it is won’t work out.

If you aren’t sure whether you struggle with avoidance behavior, consider if there are situations, experiences, people, tasks or emotions in your life you put off dealing with on the regular. If you continually avoid certain things, the same things, you might be struggling with avoidance behavior.

Today I am going to share with 5 tips on How to Stop Using Avoidance as a Coping Mechanism:

    1. Make Your Task Smaller (if possible)
    2. Identify the Fear & Worse Case Scenario
    3. Get Support/Accountability to Share Your Avoidance Behavior With
    4. Don’t Assume, Assemble the Research
    5. Accept that Growth is Uncomfortable & Something to Be Proud of

  • The Makings of a Healthy Relationship

Being in a healthy relationship is not the responsibility of one person, but both people involved. It's important that the vanity metrics aren't what's going to keep you together during hard times, it's the established groundwork & desire to work as a team that will continue to create a healthy relationship.

I have been married for over 15 years now. And my relationship with my husband is really great, but it isn’t perfect. I don’t believe anyone’s relationships are perfect. It might feel perfect because it flows pretty easily, but there are still disagreements & miscommunications to deal with, which can cause hurt feelings.  We had to take the time to learn how to communicate with each other better to get through issues we were experiencing because it would end in each of us being really upset or me (being my people-pleaser self) just agreeing with whatever he said & wanted to get the argument to end as soon as possible. There were many years when some things weren’t healthy or as strong as it could of been. But we made the decision to get couple’s counseling to strengthen our communication skills, which we knew would strengthen our marriage

Relationships are a ton of work. It feels easy in the beginning, which is great. Those experiences provide hope that it could be that way a good portion of the time you’re together. But there will come times when you need to agree to disagree, compromise or do something else to move past any conflict, problems & misunderstandings. And no one is perfect, so mistakes will be made, which can sometimes compromise a ton of feelings at once & cause even more trouble.

But even beyond communication issues, we might not consider how important other aspects of a relationship can be to us if we don’t know the makings of a healthy relationship.

Falling for someone because they contribute to your happiness, have the same interests, treat you nice, is all well & good, but not really the framework needed to decide if the relationship is going to survive any issues, known or unknown. I think we can be so insecure about ourselves that we latch onto the first person that shows tons of interest when we need to take the time to consider so much more.

Today I want to share with you 7 makings of a healthy relationship:

    1. Communication (be honest & open, having the ability to express emotions, being assertive in your needs)
    2. Trust (accepting each other at their word)
    3. Appreciation (expressing gratitude for one another, share what they mean to you)
    4. Individuality (being supportive in your partners growth, it’s ok to be your own person, continue respect for not being the same)
    5. Accountability (accept responsibility, keep your word, minimize making excuses)
    6. Support (be empathetic, practice good listening skills, have an open mind to their perspective)
    7. Respect (willing to compromise, create solutions by working together, no unknown expectations, no demands, limiting judgment of the other)

  • Are You Emotionally Exhausted? - How to Know It's Too Much

Instead of putting up with feeling awful, we should become aware of warning signs that we may be experiencing emotional exhaustion & get the help we need to manage it & let go of that unnecessary stressor.

    Show Notes:
I promise I didn’t decide on this topic because I’m currently going through it. But it’s funny that I do feel drawn to speak on it because I know I’m not the only one dealing with it. And it’s important because being exhausted, even if not mentally & only physically, is a lot to handle. It takes a lot out of you & prevents you from doing a lot of things you really need to do.

Let’s talk about what emotional exhaustion is for a minute. Being emotionally exhausted is the feeling of extreme tiredness, while also feeling apathetic, irritable, overwhelmed or drained. When you’re emotionally exhausted you feel like there is very little you can accomplish & get done in your day. Emotional exhaustion is closely related to burnout because it’s a symptom of burnout. If you feel like you are dealing more with burnout in your personal life in the way of taking on too much, I encourage you to check out the episode I did on it not too long ago. It’s episode number 372 if you’re interested.

Now understanding what emotional exhaustion is, let me give you some examples of how we can become emotionally exhausted & then we will talk about the warning signs to look out for when experiencing it.

There are several reasons why we might experience emotional exhaustion. One of the biggest ones for me personally is the lack of support in life. When you don’t have anyone else to at least pour encouragement into you or if you have expressed the need for support & no one is willing to be there for you. Some seasons require us to walk alone, but even the smallest amount of support is helpful.

Here are a few others that can contribute to experiencing emotional exhaustion:

    • Relationship struggles
    • Working too much
    • Dealing with chronic illnesses
    • Lacking control in your life
    • Grief of loss

Emotional exhaustion can be managed easiest by taking breaks from the things that are contributing to it. Also by putting your mental health first & seeking assistance with that, as well. But today I’m not going to go over how to manage it. I want to share with you the warning signs to look out for, in case you do end up experiencing it & can do something about it sooner than later.

Here are 7 warning signs that you’re emotionally exhausted:

    1. Your anxiety has gotten worse/having panic attacks
    2. You have little patience
    3. You forget things more often
    4. You’re apathetic (loss of interest, no longer caring or concern for many things)
    5. You’re irritated more often
    6. You struggle to concentrate

  • What Scares You the Most? - Facing Our Fears

It's easy to let fear control you with the strong emotions it invokes. But allowing our emotions to control us is what causes us more pain & struggle than examining why we feel this way & what we should do to push through. I'm reviewing 7 of the biggest fears that hold us back & what we should about it.

    Show Notes:
If I were to ask myself what scares me most, it would be the uncertainty of the future.

I’m a planner & I like to have an idea of what’s going to happen or just plan it out myself. It’s pretty simple for me. But what feels simple to me is actually difficult in a world where you never know what is going to happen.

In general, I have a problem with fear. And it feels like I pick up a new fear every single week because I’m trying harder to challenge myself & step out of my comfort zone. Which is a good thing! We are supposed to be out there pushing boundaries & making ourselves better by engaging in new experiences & going through mistakes & failures. Things I talk about ALL THE TIME with you all. But talking about, teaching about & coaching you all through doesn’t make it any easier to deal with myself & me helping you through isn’t going to make the process any easier for you, but it does give you tips on how best to manage it & make it to the other side.

I try to approach most of my fears by asking myself, “What’s the worst that could happen?” This exercise doesn’t always help because I start to believe the worst-case scenarios I come up with & really just scare myself even more. But when it does work, it can boost my confidence a bit & shave the fear down a little bit. I have found that understanding the circumstance or the experience I have to go through a bit more does help to reduce my fear.

Today I want to answer the question, “What Scares You the Most,” with 7 fears that hold us back the most in life & what we can do to face those fears:

    1. Uncertainty (anxiety is crippling, but worrying about the future will change nothing or manifest anything good)
    2. Failure (best learning lessons & no one’s perfect)
    3. Rejection (this is nice because it gives you an end/final answer, provides direction or need to challenge yourself)
    4. Being Judged By Others (people will judge no matter what because it gives them a break from judging themselves)
    5. Missing Out (FOMO is a time-waster/look into why you feel this way: inadequacy, jealousy?)
    6. Change (we all need growth)
    7. Success (leads to procrastination & lack of action, holds you back indefinitely)

Thank you again for listening & I hope this episode was helpful.
