Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast (RHLSTP)

Book Club #78 - Finding Your Comic Genius - Another book club in front of an audience - this one coming from Aldershot with Adam Bloom talking about his exhaustive manual for improving your stand up comedy act, Finding Your Comedy Genius. They talk about knowing you are going to be a comedian from the age of 9, working alongside future stars in Asylum, the various techniques that Adam has devised to ensure your punchlines hit, how to get rolling laughs, avoiding virtual comedy and how stage time is vital to honing your instincts. But there’s stuff in this book that seasoned comics have not directly considered and rules are made to be broken. Plus the joy of self publishing and learning stuff even as he wrote the book and what it’s like to have read as many books as you’ve written.

#483 Nit Infestation - Richard is at the Stand in Newcastle with an enthusiastic Sunday afternoon crowd and he’s amazed by the number of ginger hues he can expect in the city. His guest is comedian Lauren Pattison. They talk about how low things had got for her during their last chat in lockdown, how the worst day to dump a comedian is April Fool’s Day, how working in Morrison’s during the pandemic was surprisingly creatively inspiring, coping with online criticism and how her last Edinburgh show was literally make or break for her and how, approaching thirty, she is overcoming anxiety and believing in herself.

#482 May The Force Be With You - It’s a very special and moving Christmas episode as Richard talks to Ukranian comedian Vasyl Baidak about performing comedy in a war zone, how comedy has differed before, after and during the conflict, performing in shelters and trenches, how comedy helps process the horror and how absurd comedy seems redundant in the more absurd state of war, converting Stewart Lee tickets into a car, being championed by Stephen Fry, the influence of Andy Kaufman, building the country back one house at a time and keeping the Ukraine in people’s minds and raising funds for the military. How do you tour and celebrate Christmas in a war? It’s an incredible story from a very eloquent man speaking in a second language (where school lessons did not prepare him for talking about war). Please listen and share this one. And tonight don’t thank God it’s them instead of you. Ask God why anyone has to be in this situation.

Book Club #77 - Montgomery Bonbon - Murder at the Museum - The Book Club is still on the road, this week at the Norwich Playhouse with flame-haired (though not on fire) stand up and author Alasdair Beckett-King talking about his fab children’s book series, Montgomery Bonbon. Find out the unusual way in which he got a book deal, why he wanted to write about a 10 year old girl who transforms into a male detective with an indistinguishable foreign accent, the challenge of writing jokes for kids and for making a book that appeals to all kids. Plus Dr Who, making fantastic videos like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kH-CfCaMl8, how online success has led to stand up tours and creating an image that makes you recognisable at distance from behind!

#481 What Do They Do With the Foreskins? - Rich is back in Belfast and is wondering if they should be as proud as they are of the Titanic. His guest is stand-up Shane Todd. They talk about touring America, being circumcised as an adult, whether soup or yoghurt is harder to eat in public, unusual foods to sneak into a cinema, supporting Kevin Hart on tour and what you do if he doesn’t turn up, taking a charity boxing match a bit too seriously and trying to compete with the mysteriously dead Shane Todd.
