En julio de 2002, un hombre se suicidó en Eastlake, Ohio (EEUU). Su nombre era Joseph Newton Chandler III y la policía encontró US$82,000 en su cuenta bancaria. Lo que no pudieron encontrar fue a algún pariente a quien notificar de su muerte, por lo que especialistas en genealogía participaron en la búsqueda de sus familiares. Finalmente lograron dar con una pariente que vivía en California; sin embargo, según su testimonio, Joseph Newton Chandler III había muerto en 1945, cuando tenía ocho años ¿Quién era la persona que había muerto en Eastlake en 2002? Y más urgente aún ¿Por qué esa persona le robó la identidad a un niño muerto en 1945? ¿Se trataba de un fugitivo de algún tipo? Este misterioso caso fue resulto –al menos de manera parcial– gracias a la genética y la genealogía forense.
