NY: Violence continues on the NYC subway system following several viral videos indicating the status quo. Yesterday, conflagration on the subway in Brooklyn involved a stabbing and shooting among passengers. AC: As a reminder, The NY Governor’s office has banned the use of rifles among the hundreds of National Guard soldiers now stationed in the subway system.

AC: As submarine communications cables have been under increased scrutiny due to Houthi threats in the Red Sea, many are assuming impacts to cables are due to nefarious intent by Houthi forces. However, the cables impacted this time are not in the same area as before; most of the cables currently affected are part of the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) cable system, which lies along the western coast of Africa.

USA: Several states have issued messages of caution regarding the upcoming April 8th solar eclipse. Specifically, several states have warned locals to stock up on food and water in advance of large crowds of tourists looking to get the best view of the solar event.

Analyst Comments: Some of the preparations and cautions for the upcoming eclipse are quite strange for what is essentially a large tourism event. For instance, several counties in Texas have already issued disaster declarations in preparation for this event. While millions of people flocking to small towns for the event will certainly overwhelm local resources, some have noted that the impacts are likely overstated. As most of the statements of calamity are originating from county-level disaster response agencies, this could be more of a funding allocation attempt rather than an apocalyptic event. As a reminder the last eclipse in 2017 occurred largely without incident, with the exception of hotels selling out of rooms, and large traffic delays.

Haiti: The situation continues to deteriorate as U.S. forces deploy to the region to secure the U.S. Embassy. Marines from SOUTHCOM’s Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team (FAST) have deployed to increase defenses around the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince. American citizens in the region continue to be urged to evacuate following the continuation of violence throughout the country. AC: As Haiti has been a common destination for international aid groups and NGOs, the number of Americans in Haiti on any given day has fluctuated following the downward spiral since the 2010 earthquake. Consequently, though the situation has been tense for decades, the recent escalation of violence has caught many aid workers largely unaware, who now face the logistical challenges of transportation in a rapidly deteriorating situation.

USA: This morning the House passed H.R. 7521, a bill allegedly to restrict the influence of foreign media platforms in the United States. The bill now heads to the Senate for a vote.

Analyst Comments: Gaining traction as the “TikTok ban bill”, critics have argued that the CCP influence and control of TikTok is debatable. But perhaps more indirectly, critics argue that this bill allows the United States government more leeway in restricting foreign media, and is a slippery slope on the path to potentially restricting more platforms than just TikTok. Specifically, the language of the bill allows the U.S executive branch to shut down any to shut down any “unacceptable risk to national security” that is owned by a foreign entity. However, in a classic continuation of changing definitions to suit political needs, the definition of what a “foreign adversary” is appears to not just be defined in the document itself, but also can be determined by the President of the United States, who (per the text of this bill as it stands) can designate any entity as “foreign”. Though more legal analysis is needed regarding the specific wording, this vague and confusing wording that does not rule out potentially nefarious use is likely by design.

For those thinking that a simple VPN could be used to bypass such archaic legislative actions, the wide-blanket nature of the wording directly links even ISPs themselves to foreign entities. Per page 3, line 24 of the proposed bill, internet service providers are also targeted by this legislation for allowing foreign adversary content to be hosted on websites they route traffic to. Depending on the interpretation of this text, the implications will almost certainly be vastly more wide-ranging than just affecting TikTok.

In any case, the truly bipartisan effort to pass this bill, along with the overwhelming media and special interest group support for this bill, is likely cause for concern in its own right.

USA: Yesterday a report published by the Government Accountability Office confirmed that video game companies are collaborating with federal agencies to identify and target “extremism”. The report also indicates that the end goals of this collaboration are unclear, and conducted without warrants due to the Terms of Service agreements acknowledged by users of all online gaming platforms.

Analyst Comments: It is highly likely that federal agencies are using terms of service violations to flag what they consider to be “extremist” behavior, which at this point is any idea that is not approved by the powers that be. Consequently, this shifting of the goalposts is a continuation of the crippling domestic spying environment that all Americans are already living in.

Regarding the deteriorating situation in Haiti, indicators are mounting suggesting the beginning of a mass exodus from Haiti. As the migrant crisis continues, it is likely that the United States will see an increase in illegal immigrants from Haiti following the latest escalation of violence. The specifics of how this migrant surge will manifest are unknown, however an easy observation to make is the potential for mass exodus from Haiti if the violence continues.

Haiti: Conflict continues to escalate as the U.S. Embassy is evacuated of non-essential personnel. Full-blown rebellion is the nature of the recent conflict as every governmental department and agency has been completely stripped of what little control they maintained in the country before the recent conflagration. Currently the most powerful man in the country is Jimmy Cherizier, an ex-police officer turned warlord who has taken control of most of the country.

AC: The majority of Port-au-Prince has been host to disturbing violence over the past few days as the situation has deteriorated due to gang violence. Before the current escalation, Haiti was well known for being the most violent society in the western hemisphere. As sheer desperation and extreme poverty are the norm, the latest escalation of violence has resulted in disturbing behavior, to include limited instances of cannibalism.

SC: This afternoon a former Boeing quality manager was found dead outside a Charleston hotel where he was staying while testifying against Boeing. Authorities state that John Barnett died of a self-inflicted wound while undergoing depositions related to a whistleblower lawsuit regarding Boeing allegedly using substandard parts in the construction of aircraft. His body was found in his vehicle in the parking lot of his hotel when he did not show up for the next round of depositions the next day.

AC: As all eyes are on Boeing after many high-profile incidents and accidents, the exceptionally suspicious death of a former quality assurance manager is almost certain to cause increased scrutiny of Boeing’s activities, in addition to highlighting the seriousness of the implications this may have throughout the aviation industry. Boeing, though suffering the bad press of several accidents in short succession, could have turned the situation around in due time. However, the very public death of a key witness during a critical deposition is not likely to result in the general public granting the benefit of the doubt to this company anytime soon.

Analyst Comments: In Haiti, the grand question remains: What is to become of this nation? Considering all factors, there are several potential courses of action. In the short term, violence is likely to continue as Cherizier seeks to centralize control of the capital. The medium-to-long term options are less clear. One option that is possible is some form of international intervention. However, no nation (particularly those with the capabilities) is eager to step up a peacekeeping force in any location, much less in Haiti. Unfortunately, though conflict has reached new heights recently, Haiti is no stranger to these conditions which have been similarly desperate for many years.

The survivors were rescued from their life rafts shortly after the strike by the Indian Navy.

Middle East: The United States has begun preparations for the creation of a temporary dock facility in Gaza, which will enable aid to be delivered more efficiently to Palestinians.

Northern Europe: NATO’s routine arctic exercise begins. OPN COLD RESPONSE has been renamed OPN NORDIC RESPONSE following the recent accession of Finland and Sweden into NATO. These exercises will involve around 90,000 soldiers and will continue until March 14th.

Recovery efforts are underway to provide feed for the ranchers affected by the disaster. AC: Though the impact of the damage is still being assessed, the loss of substantial portions of grazing land is highly likely to continue to impact beef prices as almost 90% of the cattle in Texas are reared in the areas affected by wildfire.

Washington D.C. – The parent of a fallen service member was arrested after shouting at President Biden during the State of the Union address Thursday night. Following Biden’s remarks regarding the safety of Americans, Steve Nikoui shouted the words “ABBEY GATE!” before being arrested. AC: Steve Nikoui is the father of LCpl Kareem Nikoui, USMC, one of the 13 American service members killed by a suicide bomber at the Abbey Gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. 

NY: Approximately 750 armed National Guard soldiers have been deployed to the NYC subway system allegedly in response to the recent crime wave. Bag-search checkpoints have been established on the subway as well.

Red Sea/HOA: Attacks on U.S. Navy forces in the region intensified this morning following multiple swarm attacks via kamikaze drones. CENTCOM reports that 28 drones were shot down over a roughly four hour period around dawn local time. CENTCOM affirms that no U.S. or coalition vessels were damaged in this attack.

Haiti: Overnight demonstrations intensified in Port-au-Prince following weeks of kinetic activity throughout the nation. Last night the Presidential palace was attacked along with many government facilities throughout the capital city.

Washington D.C. – Steve Nikoui has been released from jail following his arrest in the Capitol Thursday night. Initial reports suggest he was charged with Misdemeanor Protest, and paid $50 to be released on bail. As of this report, charges are being pursued by the Capitol Police, which carry a maximum sentence of $500 or 90 days in prison.

TX: A National Guard UH-72 LAKOTA helicopter crashed near Rio Grande City at approximately 2:50pm yesterday. Two soldiers and one CBP agent were killed in the crash, and one other soldier was injured. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

Analyst Comments: The situation in Haiti has intensified following weeks of gang-related violence that has swept the nation. The “demonstrations” as such are challenging to describe. One of the major catalysts for this recent wave of conflict is government corruption surrounding Prime Minister Ariel Henry. As PM Henry left Haiti for a conference in Kenya last week, organized criminal actors within Haiti seized the chance to attempt a coup, which has largely just resulted in sporadic attacks on police stations and government facilities. As such, the very few peaceful and legitimate demonstrations against corruption have been eclipsed by gangs vying for control of the beleaguered nation. The United Nations has repeatedly called for PM Henry to step down amid these corruption scandals, and PM Henry has still not been able to return to Haiti following the increase in violence in Port-au-Prince, which is logistically challenging due to the geography of the runway presenting risks of small arms fire.

Nikoui was removed from Congress, arrested, and charged by Law Enforcement for his actions. Analyst Comments: There are procedures in place to allow for and manage potentially disruptive actions by grieving family members at high-profile events such as this. Honor, integrity, decorum, discernment, and a host of other character traits are mandatory for those working in career fields (for example, military funeral details where these events sometimes happen), which require official personnel to continue proceedings so that the grieving family member is assisted in such a way as to keep their dignity.

At absolutely NO point, is it acceptable in any form or fashion for a grieving parent to be put in handcuffs in front of an array of reporter’s cameras, especially if that grieving family member was literally seeing himself out of the venue on his own volition after his remark. Whether intentional or not, the message delivered to the parents of fallen service members is very clear. At this point, displaying anger towards authorities responsible for the loss of a child is a badge of honor among those most directly affected by the actions of this government, and high-ranking defense officials. Not only was this message clear, but the fact that zero Representatives of the People of the United States did anything, or voiced any objection to this arrest as it was happening in full view of everyone is very telling. Several politicians have, in the hours after the event, issued statements of condemnation for the heavy-handed response of Law Enforcement, especially as none of the hundreds of demonstrators actively blocking the road to prevent the Presidential motorcade from reaching the Capitol were arrested for that demonstration. The implications of this event, which should have been the spark that ignited much larger discourse, are much more wide-ranging than a simple disruptive event. The parent of a dead child directly addressing the President of the United States, and being prosecuted for it, is perfectly illustrative of how the dynamics between various agencies, and the American people, have changed. As many Americans ask themselves when the masses of employees working to harm the American people will finally see the light, and stop being a part of these institutions…events like this strongly indicate that the American people likely already have their answer. 

Regarding the speech itself, several issues of potentially grave consequence were discussed. One of which was the concept of American involvement with humanitarian aid in Gaza, largely surrounding the implementation of amphibious logistics hubs in the region, which is worthy of more commentary than the brief notes these reports can provide. However, for posterity and in the interest of time, it would be exceedingly wise to examine the security implications of American ships being in extremely close proximity to combat actions in Gaza. Examining the means, motivations, and technical abilities of “allies” in the region is also paramount, as some regional power players exhibit every possible indicator of conducting false-flag attacks against American resources, with the goal of stopping humanitarian aid.

Red Sea/HOA: The Indian Navy rescued the surviving crew of the M/V TRUE CONFIDENCE following the successful Houthi missile strike yesterday. Three crew members were killed in the attack, with four others wounded. Three crew members are in critical condition due to severe burns. AC: These are the first fatalities reported onboard a civilian vessel as a result of Houthi strikes during the Red Sea Crisis.

NY: Substantial efforts are underway in New York City to allegedly reduce rampant crime. Approximately 750 armed National Guard soldiers have been deployed at strategic sites around the city, mostly to patrol and man checkpoints within the subway system. NYPD forces have also deployed security checkpoints to search the personal bags of subway travelers. AC: It is important to note that authorities have stated this deployment is not specifically for counterterrorism efforts or concerns, but rather to address the increase in standard street crime.

Analyst Comments: Though it is obvious almost to the point of not being worthy of mention, the efforts undertaken to have soldiers “police” high-crime areas in NYC are likely not intended to reduce crime, though having armed soldiers everywhere will certainly achieve this result. When examining the desires of political leadership, it is important to remember that New York has highly incentivized crime by a plethora of means; refusing to arrest criminals in the first place, refusal to charge suspects once arrested, reducing punishments for convicted criminals, and granting no-cash bail for repeat offenders. None of these laws and/or policies have changed, which suggests the heavy-handed response to crime is reactive, and likely not entirely intended to reduce crime. It is likely that this move is to both save face (and appear to do something without actually changing the laws that are the problem), and normalize the use of armed soldiers for domestic policing tasks, up to and including manning checkpoints and searching private citizens. As the election season ramps up, the normalization of militarization will be absolutely crucial.
