How does adoption affect a newborn baby? Does a baby experience grief and trauma due to the loss of it's birthmother? I explore the first chapter of The Primal Wound, a book written by Nancy Verrier, that discusses the lasting effects adoption can have on the adoptee.
So, what is the primal wound and how can this wound cause ripple effects in relationships, behaviors, emotions, bonding and even birthday parties of adoptees?
It's time we have the hard conversations. It's time to let the adoptees have some rights. It's time for adoptees to feel the freedom to speak about their experiences, their trauma and their stories without judgement or feeling uncomfortable.
If you are an adoptee, hearing some of the opinions in this book and this episode, may be triggering and difficult to digest. You may not even realize that some of the behaviors you exhibit as an adult may stem from the trauma you had when being taking from the first safest place you experienced in your life, your birth mother.
If you or someone you know would like to tell their adoption story on the podcast (anyone in the adoptee constellation), please send an email to [email protected], and your story will be considered for the podcast.
