  • Aristotle - Outlines And Exactness In Ethics - Sadler's Shorts
This is a short reflection on an insightful passage from Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics book 1 chapter 7, in which Aristotle is discussing what kinds of people have developed good judgement about matters, particularly those concerned with what he calls Political Science and Moral Science or Ethics, the discipline involved in living well. He references two distinct types or sources of immaturity that would make a person less able to study, understand, and apply ethics - immaturity of age and immaturity of character

  • Epictetus - Taking A Pause With Pleasures - Sadler's Shorts
This is a short reflection on an insightful passage from Epictetus' Enchiridion, chapter 34, in which Epictetus suggests a practice that we can engage in when we are encountering something that tempts us with the promise of enjoying pleasure. Instead of giving in right away, we can take a pause and consider how we will feel after either indulging in the pleasure or resisting it. We might even feel a greater pleasure in having maintained our own self-control.

  • Lev Shestov - Logical Thinking, Philosophy, and Imagination - Sadler's Shorts
This is a short reflection on an insightful passage from Lev Shestov's book All Things Are Possible (part 1, ch. 21), in which he tells us that "the habit of logical thinking kills imagination" and argues that genuine philosophy must give priority to imagination over logic.

  • Lev Shestov - The Creative Process - Sadler's Shorts
This is a short reflection on an insightful passage from Lev Shestov's book All Things Are Possible (part 1, ch. 42), in which he discusses the "raptures of the creative process" imagined by consumers of creative works, and the mistaken syllogistic inference they engage in. A more realistic view is that "creative activity is a continual progression from failure to failure".

  • William James, Pragmatism Lecture 2 - Pragmatic Truth Of The Absolute - Sadler's Lectures
This lecture discusses the 19th-20th century philosopher and psychologist, William James, and focuses his set of lectures, "Pragmatism: A New Name for Some Old Ways of Thinking", specifically on lecture 2, "What Pragmatism Means", and discusses how a pragmatist might look at the notion of the (fairly Hegelian) Absolute, considered as an object of religious belief.
